Blu-Ray Review – Beware the Batman: Season 1, Part 1

First I’d like to thank WB Archive Collection, who has presented me so graciously with the Blu-Ray collection of Beware the Batman, Season 1, Part 1.

My first impression of this cartoon was that it was going to be terrible not having Batman’s regular rogue’s gallery. However upon actually watching this new rendition of the Bat on Cartoon Network, I found I actually enjoyed it. I think this is the closest we’ve come to a new Batman The Animated Series in the last decade. The visuals are a bit dis-proportioned at times but I still found myself enjoying the aesthetics and the story. The voice cast was another great part of this show.

As for the disc itself itself, I found myself a little disjointed. I love the series and there were things left unsaid. My first question is the “Part 1” which we all saw the first 13 episodes on television. Following that the show was suddenly off the air. So where is the “Part 2” coming into play? My other complaint is the lack of any sort of special features whatsoever, which I will get more into that below.

Now the cover on this I feel captures the essence of the show on it perfectly. It has the perfect meshing of the new Batman cartoon logo as well as the new Batman and his partners in crime fighting. Simply beautiful cover to the disc set.

REVIEW:

THE MENU:

The Menu system here is quick and to the point which is again something I love about this set. It places Batman in center stage as well as has the text neatly, and clearly placed at the bottom.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

This is where I found myself saddened. I figured being 2014, a CGI cartoon and Batman, we would at least have SOME special features. But again there were none. I figured there could have been Behind the Scenes studio items, sketches, or something delving into the history on this new Batman. Maybe I am speaking too soon and if this is going for another half season or 2 then my hopes are it shows up on the next round of releases.

AUDIO:

Audio for this season is as pure as the original release if not more. Between the crisp sounds of vocals, gun fire, explosions or music this shines.

VISUALS:

As far as Visual, the menu’s as stated above were clear and concise. The overall visual quality for the show itself was great and again was much cleaner than it’s TV counterpart.

OVERVIEW:

My overall thoughts on this is, despite the lack of special features it is a must own. For animation, and Batman fans alike I feel this show has given a new origin and storytelling to the original Batman almost akin to the Earth One storyline. I found myself not only intrigued but with this on Blu-Ray it allows me to see this as crystal clear as the publisher intended. I believe it deserves a place on your DVD shelf.
