Batman Gates Of Gotham #2

I had heard about this 5 issue series, and the fact that it was turned into a TPB. I mainly wanted to check it out because of the two part interview Kevin Smith did with Kyle Higgins on Fatman on Batman. You can catch Part 1 and Part 2, they are both awesome listens. As I said before due to events in the Bat Books at the time this 5 issue series was put out, Dick Grayson is now Batman.

THE WRITING:

This book tells the story of Gotham City as it was being built, and Gotham City of today. It does a great job of intertwining the past and present. The storytelling by Scott Snyder and Kyle Higgins is amazing!!!! The writing is so damn good, the book even made me care about Damian a little. Without spoiling it, because EVERY BAT FAN NEEDS TO READ THIS! The basic plot is that Alan Wayne, ancestor of Thomas and Bruce Wayne, hires the Gate brothers to create the skyline of Gotham, and improve the city in the 1880s. The book flashes between that time and the present day, where someone is destroying the iconic buildings and bridges that were built way back then. With Dick Grayson as Batman now, we get the history he never really paid any attention to. Meaning this history of Gotham. We see his emotions about even being Batman, and living up to the Legend that was Bruce Wayne. I find it awesome that Scott and Kyle wrote in that Commissioner Gordon knows it’s a different guy under the cowl. Gordon doesn’t know who Batman is, but apparently he knows it’s not “the other guy” I could reread this book once a week, it is that damn good. The story pays off in so many ways.

THE ART:

The art in the book is very awesome, Trevor McCarthy does an amazing job. I love how old timey the layouts are with the pages. It has that classic 1800s feel as far as the borders on the pages. The one thing that threw me when reading the story in the past as they are building Gotham, was the lettering. It’s indicative of the 1800s style of writing. I like the way they use it in the book, but going from all caps print lettering, to cursive was slightly weird for me. I understand why the letterer did that, and it’s not a bad thing. I just was like woah, they are really distinguishing how the past and present are supposed to be. Dick Grayson in the Batsuit looks great. The colors are amazing, the Architect suit is cool looking. All around some amazing art in this book.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

In closing. Batman – Gates Of Gotham is an AMAZING Graphic Novel. As I stated before ANY AND ALL BAT FANS should be reading this. Even though it isn’t Bruce as Batman, it’s still DAMN good. It shows that if the time ever came, that Dick Grayson can be THE GODDAMN BATMAN!!!!! So go search this book out, and ENTER THE GATES OF GOTHAM!!!!!!
