Mark of the Phantasm Part 5 of 7 “Starcrossed”

Once again the writers and artists telling this flashback story are amazing!!! We get back to the Jokerz and seeing the Phantasm. Oh BOY do we see the Phantasm…. in the friggin BAT CAVE!!!!  So ya know that thing… I had mentioned in the last review. That idea I had had that I couldn’t bring myself to mention? Well that idea was I thought Higgins and Siegel were gonna make Bruce and Babs’s baby a grown up Phantasm. I’m glad they didn’t go that direction. However once I thought about it, I couldn’t unthink that thought. Luckily they tie it all back to the DCAU continuity of Andrea Beaumont being the Phantasm.

Writing:

So Kyle and Alec steer us towards the end of this arc. The writing is stellar as always. We see at the beginning that they come out of the flashback of last issue. With one question and one sad glance. We see that Barbara having a baby didn’t end too well. The rest of the writing this chapter is Bruce letting Terry know where the Jokerz have Jake, and then The Phantasm arrives! I know that Kyle Higgins is a huge fan of the DCAU continuity, hence why this title has been so damn good. The scene in here between Bruce and Andrea is simply amazingly heart wrenching. Not as heart wrenching as LORD Superman killing Terry in the crossover. But there’s a lost of history between Bruce Wayne and Andrea Beaumonnt. You can also see how different the two characters are. Whereas Andrea is still willing to do anything she can to save the ones she cares about, even killing…. We see that and of course we know that Bruce would never do that. The screwed up thing about this entire issue, and the next one is that Bruce actively sends Andrea to Terry and the Jokerz.

Art:

Hester, Gapstur, and Filardi continue to be amazing with the colors, the shading, the way they show off the bat camouflage technique, and so many more awesome art bits. I love how the pink of the Joker Toxin engulfs Jake and in his shadow he almost looks like the Joker. Is it just me or did anyone else notice the nod to BTAS ep Feat of Clay? When in the art Ghoul sprays Jake in the face…I thought that was very much a nod to Daggett poyring the chemicals down Matt Hagen’s throat in FEat of Clay. But again might just be me. Once again these artists craft a well to look at chapter. The rain and other shots with Batman are all well done! With these artists you can really tell that they are excelling at bringing the DCAU to life here in this series!
