Kevin’s Most Anticpated Films of 2014

2014-MOST

2014 is  a year to look forward to for many reasons for cinephiles everywhere. For me personally, I think we have had a pretty big resurgence in the film industry in the last few years. Where we used to struggle to come up with Top 10 lists for a specific year, it seems that lately people have given up on trying to narrow the list down to 10 and instead we are seeing Top 15, 20, or even Top 25 lists.

Looking back specifically on the last few years what is obvious is that we have also seen a shift in the popularity of certain film genres. Take 2013 as an example. 2013 provided very few comedies that cracked Top Listings, and let’s not even get started about the life support that romantic comedies have been on as of late. Last year along with recent times have also seen a resurgence in ‘coming of age’ films as well as films depicting real life events, peoples or at least loosely based on true stories.

Whereas, a decade ago Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Chronicles of Narnia, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Mummy and The Scorpion King represented a resurgence in the Fantasy Genre, so far this decade has seen the momentum come to a screeching halt with the flops of such films as; 47 Ronin, Clash/Wrath of the Titans, Immortals, John Carter and Percy Jackson. In its place we have seen an influx of science fiction films and the incredibly lucrative Superhero blockbusters!

But what will we see reign supreme in 2014?

Obviously it is hard to predict what films will live up to potential or expectations but nonetheless it is fun to look ahead to what exactly 2014 has in store. I love the annual task of deciding what you are most anticipating for the year for a number of reasons. First, it allows you the opportunity to educate yourself on what is coming down the pipeline and gives you an excuse to watch countless trailers! It also though, provides you with the chance to take off your ‘critic’ hat for a moment. When making a list like this its not about trying to predict the next ‘best picture’ class, heck its hardly even about making a list of what you think will be the ‘best’ films or even ‘your favorite’ films of the year. You can indulge yourself with a list like this…because its simply about what you, personally, are most looking forward to.

Save the critic hat for the end of 2014 when we are faced with the task of coming up with the best films from the first half of the decade (2010-2014)!

Until then, here are the 35 films I am most looking forward to for 2014 and the reasons why!

Nymphomaniac-poster-compo-010

35. Nymphomaniac Part 1 & 2

Release Date: March 21st, 2014

Director: Lars von Trier

Writers: Lars von Trier

Starring: Charlotte Gainsbourg, Stellan Skarsgård, Shia LaBeouf, Jamie Bell, Christian Slater, Uma Thurman, Willem Dafoe, Connie Nielsen, Mia Goth, Udo Kier

Synopsis: The story of Joe, a self-diagnosed nymphomaniac who is discovered badly beaten in an alley by an older bachelor, Seligman, who takes her into his home. As he tends to her wounds, she recounts the erotic story of her adolescence and young-adulthood

The Positive: I guess the draw for this film for me is strictly the intrigue between the type of content being covered and the cast involved. I’m not expecting it to be great but it could definitely be interested

The Negative: The potential for this movie to simply rely on the ‘sexual’ aspects and for the film to come across simply as softcore porn.

34. A Million Ways to Die in the West

Release Date: May 30th, 2014

Director: Seth MacFarlane

Writers: Seth MacFarlane, Alex Sulkin, Wellesley Wild

Starring: Seth MacFarlane, Charlize Theron, Liam Neeson, Amanda Seyfried, Sarah Silverman, Giovanni Ribisi, Neil Patrick Harris

Synopsis: After a cowardly sheep farmer backs out of a gunfight, his fickle girlfriend leaves him for another man. When a mysterious and beautiful woman rides into town, she helps him find his courage and they begin to fall in love. But when her husband, a notorious outlaw, arrives seeking revenge, the farmer must put his newfound courage to the test.

The Positive: It’s from the team behind Family Guy and Ted.

The Negative:  This could easily be a disaster and one of the biggest letdowns of the year. Yes, MacFarlane did a decent job with Ted, but can he really pull off a live-action comedy?

chef

33. The Chef

Release Date: May 9th, 2014

Director: Jon Favreau

Writers: Jon Favreau

Synopsis: The story of Carl Casper, who loses his chef job and cooks up a food truck business in hopes of reestablishing his artistic promise. At the same time, he tries to reconnect with his estranged family.

The Positive:An amazing cast that includes the combination of Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr. They seemed to work pretty well together in the Iron Man franchise…maybe they can work just as well outside of the comic book world

The Negative: The question I suppose is whether a story with this plot line can resonate with audiences

jupiter-ascending-mila-kunis-636-380

32. Jupiter Ascending

Release Date: July 18th, 2014

Director: Andy Wachowski, Lana Wachowski

Synopsis: Jupiter Jones was born under a night sky, with signs predicting that she was destined for great things. Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning other people’s houses and an endless run of bad breaks. Only when Caine, a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along—her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.

The Positive: When you have the writers behind Cloud Atlas and The Matrix in charge, there is always the possibility for a pretty clever, fun and thought provoking film.

The Negative:   When you have the writers behind Cloud Atlas and The Matrix in charge, there is always the possibility for a film that makes no sense whatsoever and takes eleven viewings for you to try and wrap your head around things. There is also the possibility that this film is actually too thin for this writing team and things may be too simplistic for us to really get a movie we can sink our teeth into.

31. The Equalizer

Director: Antoine Fuqua

Writers: Richard Wenk

Synopsis: A feature film adaptation of the hit 1980s television series “The Equalizer.” Edward Woodward starred as Robert McCall, a private detective with a lot of contacts who is available for hire if you have a problem that you don’t know how to solve.

The Positive:  Antoine Fuqua directed Olympus has Fallen, Training Day and Replacement Killers which are all films that I think are entertaining and worth a watch.  Oh, yea it has Denzel Washington in it too 🙂

The Negative: Not sure why anyone felt the need to make a movie based on this television series. I don’t think its really going to draw much of a nostalgia crew here.

Paranoia seizes them as everyone begins to suspect one another. Friendships are tested, loyalties are questioned and marriages crumble as the group is consumed by fear, suspicion and murder in this relentless thriller.

The Positive: I honestly fully expect this movie to be awful…but I can be a sucker for the crime thriller genre

The Negative: Every aspect of this film could end up being the negative part and it could get lost in the shuffle as just another average or below average crime thriller. Hopefully, I’m wrong though

The PositiveThis movie has been delayed for more then two years, perhaps they really took their time and put some serious work into it. It also boasts a ridiculous voice cast including the great Patrick Stewart.

The NegativeMaybe this film was delayed for so long for a reason…

Every night they’ve closed tight. And every 30 days a new boy has been delivered in the lift.

The Positive: The plot just seems intriguing to me for some reason.  If anything at least the movie could be a unique film compared to a lot of what hollywood has to offer traditionally.

The Negative. An unproven director, writer and cast could equate to a major flop

Fury Movie

23. Fury

Release Date: November 14th, 2014

Outnumbered and outgunned, Wardaddy and his men face overwhelming odds in their heroic attempts to strike at the heart of Nazi Germany.

The Positive: David Ayer has brought us some great films like End of Watch, Training Day and U-571. Brad Pitt, Jason Isaacs and Michael Pena are all capable of delivering truly memorable performances

The Negative: I’m honestly joining the bandwagon of people who can’t stand Shia LaBeouf thanks to his unethical practices over the past few years. Also, can this film separate itself from the plethora of WWII films already in existence?
