In Time

Time is money!

In Time is a film that was released October 28, 2011. It stars Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried, Cillian Murphy, Olivia Wilde, Matt Bomer, Johnny Galecki, and Vincent Katheiser. When I first saw the trailer for this film I was super excited. Moreso by the premise of the film, rather than who was starring in it. However I will say that Justin Timberlake has turned into a damn fine actor.

The whole plot of the film is that “time” is the new currency. By 2161, genetic alteration has allowed humanity to stop aging at 25 but people are required to earn more time after turning 25 or die within a year. ‘Living time’, which can be transferred among individuals, has replaced money and its availability is displayed on an implant on people’s lower arm. When that clock reaches zero, one dies instantly.

This film is a very interesting way to portray a society. When you break it down it is a Robin Hood story. Robbing time from the rich to distribute it to the poor. In Time was a film that captured my attention immediately from beginning to end. Every acting performance in this is awesome, and seeing Matt Bomer outside of White Collar was great. I actually barely recognized him. Also seeing Johnny Galecki outside of The Big Bang Theory was kinda weird, but I liked his character in this.

Will Salas is a 28 year old factory worker, saves a rich 105 year old man Henry Hamilton. While Will is sleeping Hamilton gives him 116 years, and times himself out.  Will finds out that his mother did not have enough time to catch her normal bus, because the price increased. She and Will are running towards each other, but her time runs out and she dies in Will’s arms. Will now wants to seek revenge on the people that hold the most time.

I will say that seeing Vincent Katheiser in this as Sylvia’s father was kinda shocking. For one reason the entirety of the scenes he was in, I was like I know that guy where have I seen him before?  He was Connor on Joss Whedon’s Angel!!!

If you are fan of futuristic dystopian science fiction films, you will love In Time. The pacing was well done, the score by Craig Armstrong is awesome, the acting was all great, and the plot was very unique. This is a film that I would recommend to anyone, even if it’s just a rental. It should be watched at least once. I’m not sure if the DVD copies have additional bonus materials, seeing as I bought this on iTunes it only came with a few deleted scenes.

DVD Rating: 10/10
