The Sum of All Fears

The Sum of All Fears a 2002 action political thriller based on Tom Clancy’s novel of the same name. This has had a brand new soundtrack score release from La-La Land Records! Here is a review of that score!

The Sum of all Fears is a very well acted film, but the plot is completely unbelievable. There are too many misdirects going on. That being said, I find it to be a enjoyable film to watch, and I’d say that it takes a HUGE amount of disbelief to do so. I’ve seen other films where they throw an analyist into the field, and they don’t work either. No matter who is acting in the film, these types of plots are just not set in any type of real fiction writing. Now having said that… let me say this, I have never read the Clancy novel, and I’m not saying negative things about it. Where my enjoyment for this film comes in.. is the acting performances. There is a stellar cast in this movie.

All that said Jerry Goldsmith put together a wonderfully entertaining score. A score that really makes the action and emotion of the film come to life. I will say that one thing I really wasn’t enjoying was the sung songs. It’s find that “if we could remember” is a part of track 1, but I still didn’t enjoy hearing the vocal over Goldsmith’s score. I like that the producers of this single disc set thought to include the songs on the release, but they really aren’t my thing. I guess it goes to show you that La La Land really goes ll out in making sure EVERYTHING that posibly can be included is.

Now for the rest of the score it is wonderfully put together. There are so many scores that Jerry Goldsmith has done, that half of them I never knew were his. He was a true master at capturing each feeling within the plot of the film. Each of the 25 tracks have their own tone, and I’d say that tracks 2 through 18 are the ones I listened to the most. MOST of these tracks are all previously unreleased, and that’s what I love about La La Land Records…. they take the score from the film directly. It’s so often that I’ll hear a piece of music from a film while watching it, and never get the chance to truly hear it.

Some of my favorite tracks from The Sum of all Fears are Track 2 “Do It!/I’ll Go/The Bomb”, Track 4 “Thanks Alot/That Went Well”, Track 10 “Clear the Stadium (film version)”, and Track 15 “Snap Count” Each of these pieces of music have the high action I expect out of a score for a film like this, as well as a few touching emotional moments. Looking at my playlist for this CD my most listened to track though is Track 8: “The Resevoir / Night Landing / Deserted Lab” Just love how Goldsmith brought the mystery of certain parts of the film alive in the music.

What I love about these La La Land Records releases is the liner notes that come with the albums. Not only do you get cool images from the project, but you also get insights from the people crafting the music. That is just a nice little addition that this soundtrack company does!!

As far as final thoughts I will say that even if you do not enjoy The Sum of all Fears, you can and should enjoy the music from the film. It’s a true Jerry Goldsmith classic score!! I am taking 1 full star off my rating though, because I didn’t enjoy the actual songs that were on the release.

You can get this awesome score from LA LA Land Records directly! You can also find the track listing there!

Final Rating:

RATINGS - 4.0 STAR
