  1. Just got finished with this episode, and it was quite epic. A great round up of everything that was 2011.

  2. Still working my way through the show, but I had to chime in on the top cartoons of 2011. GI Joe Renegades is hands-down my favorite, and I think, the best. It is written very well and it looks beautiful. I don’t like the design of Cobra Commander, but that’s a minor quibble.

And I agree with Court Michael that TF Prime just isn’t as good as I had hoped it would be. It started off strong with the five-parter, but it just isn’t dramatic enough for my tastes. I will continue to watch it. It has its moments, but that’s just it…it has moments. It is lacking that overall punch that it needs to make it a must-watch show.

ThunderCats is the biggest surprise of the year for me. I think it is a beautiful show. I immediately accepted the art style. To me, it is like Avatar The Last Airbender. As TFG1 Mike said, it’s a western anime style. Even the original ThunderCats has an anime look, though not the same style so prevalent in anime today. The stories have been very good too. It started off strong and has waned a bit, but I would still put it above TF Prime. I found it funny that Michael said My Little Pony has better writing. One complaint I have with TC is the voice cast. I’m so freaking tired of hearing Clancy Brown and Kevin Michael Richardson in EVERY show on Cartoon Network and elsewhere. And in TC neither of them change their voice enough to distinguish the characters from others they have done. I like KMR as Panthro, but I HATE Clancy Brown as Grune. And Grune is a major villain. But that’s a personal preference and it doesn’t diminish the quality of the show.

I can’t get into Finneas and Ferb. The Garfield Show is decent. I wouldn’t say it is great, but a good entry in the Garfield arena. Young Justice didn’t capture my interest. It does seem like a good show and I may go back and catch up at some point. The Looney Tunes Show has been quite enjoyable. For me, they had to get Daffy right, and they did. He’s the star of the show and brings the majority of the show’s humor. I could do without the Merry Mellodies and the Road Runner segments though.

    1. As always, its nice to hear your opinions and thoughts on all of the cartoons. Glad, you liked Thundercats and Renegades as much as I did!! I still think Prime has a chance to cash in on all of its potential but as you heard I didn’t rank it #1 either. As for the voice cast of Thundercats I couldn’t agree more. Cheetara and Tygra along with Wilykat and Wilykit were vast improvements over the originals in my opinion but the rest fall short.

  3. I’m just going to speak to Blanchard’s indifference to anime, as I’m only about halfway through this gargantuan episode. Dude, the style of the new Thundercats, to me, IS anime. But it’s like old anime, like Miyazaki stuff. The animation in Thundercats is a major throwback for me, and that’s why I really dig it. The only show that gives me an even greater retro anime vibe is Avatar The Last Airbender.

I totally get that you don’t care for the hyper bouncy giant-sweat-drop crap that they make now. I don’t really dig that crap, either. I wouldn’t steer you wrong. My favorite animes are the ones that look like the old Sunbow stuff from the early 80s (largely because those WERE Japanese animated), so I’m not pushing any of that Yu-Gi-Oh shit.

As I’ve said before, 25 to 30 years ago, anime was friggin’ awesome. Back before we even knew it was anime. The example I always pull is Macross. If you ever go back and watch old episodes of Transformers and GI Joe, you might say to yourself, “Boy, I wish there was a show that combined the concepts of both these programs and was more adult.” I’ve got a show for you. It’s called Macross. And there’s none of that spiky-haired Pokemon faux anime crap. Macross is REAL anime. And it’s dubbed, so it’s accessible.

And yes, it was adapted into Robotech, so you can also watch that version, if you don’t mind all of the Protoculture crap mixed into the plot.

You should also try The Irresponsible Captain Tylor, Golgo 13, and Crusher Joe. …and maybe Slayers and Dirty Pair. Literally, that’s my essential anime list. Everything else can go eff itself.

  4. Oh, and by the way, what was that crap in the last half hour? Transformers rule. GI Schmoes drool.

    1. Bunch of haters…Mike tends to forget that if it wasn’t for Joe, Hasbro would not have had the money to go get TFers. Can’t wait to here what JediMike has to say this week! hee hee

      1. You can keep saying that over and over and over. The point is Transformers was more interesting than Joe. Hell Joe became the laughing stock of the 80’s when they couldn’t keep Duke Dead. Why’s that well because Optimus Prime died! Hahaha coma my ass!

        1. Because it is true, don’t hate the truth JediMike. It’s OK, JediMike, its OK to tell us you wanted to be a space robot when you were 4. We understand.

          1. “Mike tends to forget that if it wasn’t for Joe, Hasbro would not have had the money to go get TFers.”

That’s right. You have to start small to get to the GOOD STUFF.

Also, if it wasn’t for Bosom Buddies, we would never have gotten Saving Private Ryan. I suppose that makes Bosom Buddies the superior product. Right? RIGHT?
