Talking in Circles – 93 – Star Wars: The Force Awakens

TinC-ipod

We are late to the party, but on this week’s episode we are talking all about Star Wars: The Force Awakens. We give our opinions on the biggest movie of all time. Before we get to that Dan gives a preview of his favorite comics of 2015, Greg is not a fan of a literary classic, and Chuck gives his thoughts on a new installment to one of his personal favorite franchises (that’s not Star Wars).

  1. I really like Chuck’s point about Rey needing loss. People are talking about how it effects Han, Leia, and Kylo Ren but the truth is the big person that moment will impact is Rey. I am super looking forward to seeing what type of person she turns out being. And I’m on the Chuck bandwagon. I find Daisy Ridley super charming

  3. ne thing I was happy about was that they didn’t waste time with Rey not trusting Finn after him admitting to being a storm trooper. Really thought they would spend half the movie with her upset with him only to accept his help in the end, instead she got over it quickly. Phasma surrendered way too quickly. Facepalmed at droid please. Han’s no look blaster shot seemed forced, as did Rey groveling in the pile of 60 portions. Carrie Fischer phoned in her lines. I really hope Kylo doesn’t get redeemed to the light in the next movie or two, been there done that. And if snoke is a hologram, why go to his cave to talk to him? Why not just bring the projector into the room with Rey and not leave her alone with Daniel Craig? An OK movie, Entertaining but mindless, kind of a shame that the quality of the movie has no effect on how many people will see it or how much money they will make. Star Wars is just so cool that I’ll see every upcoming movie several times no matter how bad it is. Really no incentive for Disney to go the extra mile.

    1. So many nitpicks. They didn’t go to a Cave to talk to Snoke they went to a room on the base to speak with him. They did the same thing in Empire. And its not all that uncommon for high ranking officials to speak in private. At that point Ray hadn’t shown she was capable of getting out of the situation she was in. If anything its the popularity of the movie that has naysayers picking it about bit by bit.

        1. Because I point out legit issues I’m a troll. You prove my point that people overrate this movie and yell at anyone who says anything bad about them.

      1. Those are nitpicks they are legit issues. The story was unoriginal and people got out of situations because of convenient things popping up over and over again. .

    2. I hated the Droid Please line as well, the rest I don’t see. Phasma had a gone to her head there’s not much more you can do in that situation.

  5. Regarding Rey’s mind trick, that she seemingly used without any training. While I think the idea that she’s a Mary Sue is dumb as hell, I’m always excited to debate Star Wars and I realized something while arguing with a friend of mine.

So, prevailing fan theory is that Rey has had training, presumably by Luke before his school was destroyed. But there’s another possible explanation. Not ten minutes before her mind tricking, Rey had been digging around in Kylo Ren’s mind. She literally found his deepest fear, which means that just about everything in there was open to her. She could easily have, consciously or unconsciously, pulled the fact that a mind trick exists and that it was something she can do right out of his head.

Especially if Ren, in his panic, thought “Oh god, I hope she doesn’t do this to me.”

  6. Here’s the thing about the force. It is a tricky beast and when you think of it the one thing you need more than any other is control. Look at Vader. He had total control of his emotions, even The Emperor did. That’s Kylo Ren’s issue in the final fight. He lacked total control. His emotions were all over the place and he caused him to be sloppy. Where Rey did the opposite. She had trust in the force and the stories she hear through the years. It was that trust and wiliness to let the force take over that led her to defeat KR the way she did.
