For quite a while, consumers have considers laptops as a second-class gaming machine, next to dedicated consoles. In fact, some even prefer using desktop than owning a laptop, especially since the former’s performance is better and is usually cheaper.

Mobile devices are also now considered as gaming gadgets, as O2 revealed that most premium smartphones are equipped with upgraded features that improve overall performance including larger screen sizes, bigger memory storage and other advanced functionalities.

However at the Consumer Electronic Show 2017 (CES) it gave consumers plenty of reasons to consider laptops in the future. Many of the laptops on show featured were thinner and lighter as well as having better gaming specifications than previous models.

Read on below to find out what were the top gaming laptops featured at the CES 2017.

Predator VX 15

A real standout at the CES 2017 was Acer’s gaming laptop that uses the latest Nvidia GeForce 1050 graphic card. It was dubbed ‘a budget gaming beast’ by one media outlet.

The 15.6-inch laptop will come configured with Nvidia’s budget-friendly GPU (4GB 1050 or 1050 Ti) and paired with either an Inter Core i5-7300HQ or Cord i7-7700HQ processor. While the graphic chip may not be sufficient to run VR games, it still renders full HD games at 60 frames per second.

Acer’s new laptop will be arriving later this month for an introductory price of $799 in the United States. The tech company hasn’t announced when it will be released in the United Kingdom and Australia, but the converted price will be somewhere around £650 and AU$1,110 respectively.

Project Valerie

Gaming hardware manufacturer Razer unveiled a concept laptop that features not one, but three 4K screens that offers a wide viewing experience to its users. It is said to be the world’s first tri-screen laptop.

The three screens are 17-inches in size, a larger display than the ones found on industry standard laptops today. When it is folded up, it is only 1.5-inches thick – which is thinner than the standard gaming portable PCs.

However don’t get too excited – Project Valerie is a prototype and the developers have not revealed a release date as yet. Nevertheless, it’s an impressive gaming platform for gamers and the hope is that it will see a 2017 release.

Samsung Notebook Odyssey 15

South Korea-based tech firm Samsung isn’t just working on dominating the mobile tech market, it’s also working on a new gaming laptop. They recently unveiled their first dedicated gaming laptop line under the name ‘Odyssey’. The initial line up consists of two new portable PCs, the Notebook Odyssey 15 and the Notebook Odyssey 17 which took their name from their display size (15-inch and 17-inch).

What’s surprising with these laptops is Samsung has veered away from their usual minimalist laptop design specs. On the aforementioned laptops, they have integrated a bold backlit icon on the back, have unveiled different color options, multicolored keyboard lights and an angular outline around the touchpad. They also feature a series of cooling vents which they call the ‘hexaflow vent’ design and an anti-glare screen which are both useful for gaming.

Similar to Acer, it will be using Nvidia’s new GeForce unit, so the likelihood is that will be within most consumers’ price range – similar to that of the Predator VX 15.

Lenovo’s Legion Y720
Unlike Samsung and Acer, Lenovo is aiming to change the way people game on laptops forever when it introduces the Legion Y720, which is will be able to run virtual reality games.

For several years, the tech company has been releasing great laptops and even desktops with excellent performance and prices that are more reasonable than its competition. Now, they want to see how far they can push new boundaries with this release. With the Legion Y720 they hope to compete with Dell and HP who have dominated the market for a number of years now. According to CNET, the company is “rebranding its gaming line” with the release of their Y720 and Y520 laptops.

The Y-series laptops feature 15-inch (red keyboard backlighting) and 17-inch (multi-colored keyboard light) sizes. It comes with the new seventh-generation Intel Core i7 processors and Nvidia graphics. The 17-inch variant has the GeForce 1060 chip, a Thunderbolt 3 port, Dolby Atmos surround-sound, and anti-glare 4K display. It can also be integrated with the Xbox One wireless receiver to run VR games.

The only sticking point for many consumers will be its price tag. At $1,399 it’s most likely to be out of some consumers price range.
