Desmond Reddick’s Top 15 Podcasting Tips!!!

Desmond Reddick’s Podcast Basics:

TFG1Mike here, I saw Des post this thread on Twitter awhile ago, and I thought it would make for a great post here.

This will be a thread of basic advice. Bare minimum stuff for podcasting. I’ve been doing this for 755 straight weeks. I know what I’m doing.

1. Consistency is key: be as regular as possible. Don’t overshoot your intention.

2. Podfading is real. See #1. I’ve done it. I’ve also not done it. It’s pure will that presses a podcast forward in a regular fashion. Remember that all the big celebrity podcasts (and most of the small ones) have a staff. Podcasting is work.

3. Don’t eat on mic. It’s not funny. It’s not “ironic.” It’s not cool. It’s gross.

4. Keep dead air to a minimum. If it’s longer than five seconds (that’s a generous number), there should be a punchline.

5. When you’re done editing, cut that forty seconds of dead air at the end out of your file before saving. Keep it tight.

6. Find a volume. I was reminded by a listener a while ago (time is a flat circle…years?) that the transitions are sometimes aggressive. Whether that involves “levelating,” normalizing or compressing, NOT blowing out your listeners’ eardrums is good.

7. Invest a little. There exists a multitude of very affordable USB mics out there. Think about how much you’re willing to spend to sound good. Then, read the reviews. Get the one that works for you.

8. Find the right software. I’ve used plenty of different programs (DAWs?) over my podcasting career* from Garageband to Audacity to Sound Studio. I landed on a software I had to pay for because of the frustrations of the free shit. Again: invest a little.

9. That stupid little thing that feels fun as a stinger is probably good, but think about it for a minute. Then think: how can I make this good?

10. Brevity is the soul of wit. But also sometimes it’s really fucking fun to do a long episode.

11. If you’re recording stuff with people who aren’t in the room with you, it’s important to have a program that can record you in different tracks. I use Audio Hijack, but whatever you like is fine. It’s not a necessity, but you can mute out some snorting or coughing or whatever

12. Don’t worry about a format. Do what works.

13. If a format works, then do it.

14. Give credit to your influences and your listeners.

15. Elevate independent voices. Whatever fandom you love, make sure you praise the creators who made it.

That’s all I can think of right now.

From Allen Martindale:

16. Don’t forget to press the record button.

These are all things that we strive to do here at The GeekCast Radio Network.
