Daily Routines, Having a Schedule, and Change!

Hello all and welcome to a NEW Daily Blog series from me… TFG1Mike! The idea here is for me to write something, anything, once a day for 365 days. From January 1, 2019 to December 31, 2019. In my 7th entry, I’ll be talking about daily routines, having a schedule, and dealing with change.

Daily routines are something everyone has right? Ever since I was a kid living in Massachusetts, back in the 80s, I had a set routine. Something similar to the image above, but not quite. Ya see in Massachusetts we are EARLY RISERS! I remember as a kid having to be up and showered by 6AM. After that at 6:15AM it was breakfast, and then at 6:30AM the bus would pick me up for school. This was the morning routine Monday thru Friday all school year long. It was from I think at least 2nd to 6th grade, I’m not sure about first grade and kindergarten. I do remember that Kindergarten there were changes, because at one point I was going to the Morning session, and then later I was in the afternoon session. Routines at school are a bit harder to remember, at least from elementary school they are for me.

In the weekday afternoons the bus would drop me off at home, and I’d get to have a snack, watch two cartoons, then I’d have to do my homework, eat dinner, and after all that more TV watching, until bedtime. That’s A LOT for a kid to do in one day. Then you add in the supposed 8 hours of sleep you are supposed to be getting, and after a good night’s sleep, you get up and do at all over again! During the day at school there were routines as well, half of them I do not remember at this point though. Obviously the learning, attending classes, lunch, recess, and the act of going home. What I loved about elementary school was we only had one teacher who taught us all the subjects. I liked the consistency of that, because I was a scatterbrained kid. I was also a very unorganized student.

In first grade, my teacher Mrs. Weston told us to get something from our desks. Well these were the old timey school desks that had the lift top. I had my head buried in my desk, trying my hardest to come up with the item that she requested we get out of the desks. After about 5 minutes she came over to me, looked in my desk, and then told me to get up. This old woman teacher then lifted the desk up and dumped all the contents out on the floor. “There now let’s see if you can find what I’m looking for.” She scoffed at me. <—— At least that’s the way I remember it. I don’t remember if those were her exact words, but it was something to that effect. As school progressed for me, I did get a bit more organized, but not by much.

I’ve turned into a scheduling kind of person. Made I was always like this, but within the last 10 to 15 years… I need schedules and a structure to each day. I have to have some sort of plan, so I can manage my time properly. Before Steve Megatron even launched The GeekCast Radio Network, I had Movie Week in Review scheduled out to 2020. It’s 10 years later, The GCRN is still here, and MWIRE will be returning. I remember in the early days when I was making out the schedule for our movie review podcast… I walked through my DVD shelves at the time, and just made a list of every film I had on DVD. After that I sat down at my PC, and went through them all putting each film, or film series at a certain number on the schedule.  I put together the 20 episode podcast schedule for Podcaster Meets World, our Boy and Girl Meets World podcast within four hours of making the decision to do that podcast. OptimusSolo and I would spend hours upon hours at night hashing out the ToonCast schedule. There are times when I can “just wing it”, but for the most part I need to have things thought out beforehand. I need a blueprint to look at, and then I’ll take action. There are those few and far between times that I do “wing it”, but that kinda puts me out of my comfort zone.

I need structure in my life, I need things to be a certain way, once I am used to something. I’m not good with change. Once I have an idea in my head, that’s what I want to go with. While I can be a very close minded person, I do try to listen to all ideas, and then make a choice afterwards. Sadly my stubbornness will kick in, and I’ll say something like, “yeah that’s interesting, but I prefer this way.” I’ve had to work on curbing my stubbornness all my life, sometimes it works, and other times not so much. Dealing with major and minor change in my life is also very difficult. There have been times when I’ve prescribed to Batman’s mantra of, “Block it out, and power on through.”, and then there are other times when change kicks my ass so hard that I just want to sleep it away. With all the moving around I’ve done in my life, you’d think I’d be okay with change, but that most definitely isn’t the case. When my Mom died in 2015, I grieved, but it wasn’t a long period of grieving. That change of losing my Mom… it hurt more than I can explain here, but I think over the years I’ve become more desensitized to almost everything. I know it’s foolish to think that I can live in my own little world, and not think about anything, other than what I’m doing at that moment, However from 2015 through 2017 that’s the way I was. I tried my damnedest to not let any major changes happen within those two years.

Inevitably though change happens, and I have learned to roll with the punches! There have been a lot of great changes in my life since 8-6-17. That’s when I met my future, and now wife Karen. I’ve moved states, I’ve moved homes, I’ve gotten used to a new city, and I’m generally loving life now. I have a daily routine that I stick to almost every day, and I’m fortunate enough to have the time to work on whatever I want. My morning routine now includes waking up, trying to write these daily blogs, eating, catching up on social media, planning podcasts, and so much more.

What are some of your daily routines, schedules you make, and how do you deal with change? Let me know in the comments below!

Join me tomorrow morning January 8, 2019 as I’ll be writing about My Celebrity Dinner Table! For now though I say, “Goodnight everybody!” and leave you with a Sesame Street Classic!
