All About Superman!

Hello all and welcome to a NEW Daily Blog series from me… TFG1Mike! The idea here is for me to write something, anything, once a day for 365 days. From January 1, 2019 to December 31, 2019. In my 78th entry, I’ll be talking about Superman! Last year was the 40th anniversary of Superman: The Movie, and it’s taken me all this time to even think about writing something about the Man of Steel.

As I’ve said I was born in 1980, so I found certain things after they originally debuted. Superman was definitely one of those things. I never read any of the comics, my first exposure to Superman was the Super Friends cartoon and the Fleischer Superman cartoon. I liked Super Friends, but more for Batman than Superman. I remember enjoying the Fleischer cartoon moreso than Super Friends. I loved the original films, and I’m a fan of the Lester cut over the Donner cut of Superman II. Christopher Reeve will always be my favorite live action film Superman. I separate the many versions of Superman that we have in media. I like the film version in one corner, the animated ones in another corner, and then the TV ones in a third corner.

So I loved Reeve, Cain, and both Daly and Newbern from the live action film, TV, and animation respectively. Each incarnation of Superman in media is very different, and they all have a place in my mind. While I like the ones I like, there are also those versions that I try to avoid after I’ve seen them once. The one version I avoid the most is Superman Returns, Brandon Routh is better as The Atom on Legends of Tomorrow! However what I love about Superman is that he’s a beacon of hope. He’s the man that will save the day no matter what the situation is. Superman has meant a lot of things to a lot of people over the decades. There have been thousands upon thousands of stories since Siegel and Shuster created the character, which means you can choose from any era of the character.

After the Reeve films the next time I found Superman was Lois & Clark in 1993. I loved this entire series, because it was comedy action, and lighter than what the movies were. Lane Smith is my personal favorite version of Perry White, and I loved John Shea as Lex Luthor. Dean Cain played both a cool Clark Kent, and a very heroic Superman in my mind. The show had two actors playing Jimmy Olsen, I liked Justin Whalin over the other guy. I don’t remember if it was this show or Brainsmasher: A Love Story, that I saw Teri Hatcher in first, but damn I love her as an actress. She pulled off a great Lois Lane. After that it would be Smallville in 2001, as the next time I was interested in Superman. Even though that series was more about Clark than Superman, ya know th whole Superman curse thing. Michael Rosenbaum was an amazing Lex Luthor.

I want to read some of the Superman comics, and since The Pull Bag debuted in 2013, he’s still one of the comic characters that I have yet to get to. We did do a DC Spotlight on the Superman films, along with the Supergirl film way back when… I had thoughts of doing a Lois & Clark and Smallville podcast once, but it never got off the ground. You know what they say about the best laid plans right ahh well, one of these days.

Superman is a character that will never go away, he’s someone who people can relate to at times, and he’s a hero we can look up to. Which is your favorite version of Superman? Let me know in the comments below.

Join me tomorrow morning March 20, 2019 as I’ll be writing about something!
