Best Animated Series of the Decade (2010s)

Best Animated Series of the 2010s

As 2019 winds down, more and more best of the decade lists are being published and circulated about. You can’t blame people, I mean, you only get this chance once every ten years. Even though most of these lists are purely made up of personal favorites and very little objectivity can be seen at times, they can still be a lot of fun to browse through. You probably have seen your fair share of ‘best movies of the decade’, ‘best songs of the decade’, ‘best tv shows of the decade’ etc, etc. However, I thought it would be fun to take a look at a topic that may not receive quite as much attention as those broad classifications.

I’ve spent thousands of hours over the course of this past decade reviewing cartoons, building databases at well established and respected websites and scouring the years for the most award-worthy content available. What better way to channel some of that time and knowledge than to create my very own decade ending list solely dedicated to Animated Television Series.

I’ve spent the past few months scouring my spreadsheets to determine which cartoons best represent the decade as a whole. At first glance, you might think this would be a much easier task than it turns out to be. First, you have to come up with your field of potential shows. For this purpose, the following criteria were laid out.

From those two criteria, I was able to come up with a field of approximately 400 potential entrants. (I know after reviewing this article you may think, man, this guy just listed every show from the decade. However, I promise you I covered less than 25% of the possible shows!) From there I decided to look at certain aspects of the show to help determine which of these 400 shows best represented the decade. These are some of the things I considered heavily:

After that, I concluded that ONE generic all-encompassing listing would not do this venture justice. Instead, some very clear groupings started to come into focus. So, for this article, I am breaking down my choices into the following categories.

So, without further ramblings, here are the Animated Series that I feel defined the decade.

Franchises that Dominated the Decade:

Looney Tunes

Looney Tunes Show:
Total Episodes: 52
Episodes in the 2010s: 52
Air Dates: 2011-2014
IMDB Rating: 6.6
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 3

New Looney Tunes:
Total Episodes: 156
Episodes in the 2010s: 156
Air Dates: 2015-Present
IMDB Rating: 5.9
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 0

Looney Tunes seems to have been a prominent franchise for decade upon decade but it did seem to go through a mini-revival in the 2010s with The Looney Tunes Show and New Looney Tunes. Altogether airing over 200 episodes during the decade. While neither show might be in the running for series of the decade they both gave us a new fresh look at the long-established characters that are worth checking out for any fan of the franchise.

Voltron

Voltron Force:
Total Episodes: 26
Episodes in the 2010s: 26
Air Dates: 2011-2012
IMDB Rating: 6.9
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 0

Voltron: Legendary Defender:
Total Episodes: 78
Episodes in the 2010s: 78
Air Dates: 2016-2018
IMDB Rating: 8.2
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 3

The Voltron franchise not only saw a reboot series this past decade but actually got TWO of them. Altogether it may have only been a total of 104 episodes but it still effectively brought the long adored story back to the forefront. While Voltron Force received mixed reviews overall, Legendary Defender made an imprint in the public’s eye. It has a very impressive 8.2 rating and received some critical acclaim. Ranker listed it as the 37th best-animated series of the decade and TV Guide voted it as the 2nd best-animated series to debut in 2016.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles:
Total Episodes: 124
Episodes in the 2010s: 124
Air Dates: 2012-2017
IMDB Rating: 7.8
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 8

Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles:
Total Episodes: 26
Episodes in the 2010s: 26
Air Dates: 2018-Present
IMDB Rating: 5.1
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 2

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles seems to find itself amidst a reboot every 3-5 years and that was no different in 2012 when it came roaring back with a vengeance. The 2012 reboot was received with much applause and acclaim and went on to air 124 episodes. With a 7.8 IMDB rating and much love from the awards circuit, there’s no doubt this franchise was back for a while. It was also ranked as the 34th best-animated series from Ranker. The series didn’t even take a year off before it came back again with ‘Rise’. Although Rise has not been received quite as well there’s no doubt that with this franchise airing episodes every year during the decade but two that this franchise has come to symbolize this decade as it has done for so many before.

Ben 10

Ben 10: Ultimate Alien
Total Episodes: 52
Episodes in the 2010s: 52
Air Dates: 2010-2012
IMDB Rating: 7.5
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 1

Ben 10: Omniverse
Total Episodes: 80
Episodes in the 2010s: 80
Air Dates: 2012-2014
IMDB Rating: 5.8
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 2

Ben 10:
Total Episodes: 132
Episodes in the 2010s: 132
Air Dates: 2017-Present
IMDB Rating: 2.5
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 1

Ben 10 is a rare franchise that saw THREE series over the course of the decade. The success of the series was all over the place, however. The 2017 series has aired the most episodes but has a completely dreadful IMDB rating. The 2010 series has the least amount of episodes but the best overall rating. Regardless, we were given 264 chances to watch new episodes of the franchise throughout the decade.

Care Bears

Care Bears: Welcome to Care-A-Lot:
Total Episodes: 27
Episodes in the 2010s: 27
Air Dates: 2012
IMDB Rating: 5.4
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 0

Care Bears: Unlock the Magic:
Total Episodes: 45
Episodes in the 2010s: 45
Air Dates: 2019-Present
IMDB Rating: 7.4
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 0

Another series to showcase three series throughout the decade was the 80s stall wart Care Bears. With mixed to positive ratings on all three series it’s easy to see why this franchise continues to march on.

Scooby-Doo

Scooby-Doo: Mystery Inc.:
Total Episodes: 52
Episodes in the 2010s: 52
Air Dates: 2010-2013
IMDB Rating: 8.0
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 1

Be Cool Scooby-Doo:
Total Episodes: 52
Episodes in the 2010s: 52
Air Dates: 2015-2018
IMDB Rating: 6.2
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 0

Scooby-Doo and Guess Who?:
Total Episodes: 13
Episodes in the 2010s: 13
Air Dates: 2019-Present
IMDB Rating: 7.2
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 0

It’s no surprise that another decade has passed and we have seen another healthy dose of Scooby-Doo and the mystery gang. In 2010 the franchise gave us one of it’s most successful series in Mystery Incorporated which currently holds an 8.0 rating. Be Cool received mixed ratings and reviews. The new series Guess Who however seems to be trending back in the right direction.

Donald Duck (Disney)

Minnie’s Bow-Toons:
Total Episodes: 40
Episodes in the 2010s: 40
Air Dates: 2011-2016
IMDB Rating: 6.6

IMDB Rating: 6.2
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 1

Ducktales:
Total Episodes: 47
Episodes in the 2010s: 47
Air Dates: 2017-Present
IMDB Rating: 8.2
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 1

Legend of the Three Cabelleros:
Total Episodes: 13
Episodes in the 2010s: 13
Air Dates: 2018
IMDB Rating: 7.9
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 0

In a decade where Disney seemed to have virtually taken over the entertainment world, it’s no surprise that we have found a way to highlight some of their animated series as well. It may surprise some thought that it was Donald Duck and not Mickey Mouse who made the biggest splash overall. While three of the series Donald may have just been a part of the larger gang, he was no doubt the main player in The Legend of the Three Cabelleros and the highly acclaimed reboot of Ducktales. With above-average to great rating and reviews Donald Duck and the Disney gang show no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

Transformers

Transformers: Prime:
Total Episodes: 65
Episodes in the 2010s: 65
Air Dates: 2010-2013
IMDB Rating: 7.8
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 2

Transformers: Rescue Bots:

Air Dates: 2012-2016
IMDB Rating: 6.5
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 3

Transformers: Robots in Disguise:
Total Episodes: 71
Episodes in the 2010s: 71
Air Dates: 2015-2017
IMDB Rating: 6.0
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 2

Transformers: Cyberverse:
Total Episodes: 36
Episodes in the 2010s: 36

IMDB Rating: 6.8
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 0

Transformers: Rescue Bots Academy:
Total Episodes: 52
Episodes in the 2010s: 52
Air Dates: 2019-Present
IMDB Rating: 7.9
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 0

Many people may be aware of the multi-picture run in the Feature Film world but Transformers was even more present in the Animated Series sector. Airing a grand total of over 325 episodes so far this decade it’s no question that this franchise deserves some attention here. For me, the bright spot in the bunch was Transformers: Prime which currently sits with a 7.8 IMDB rating.

Star Wars

Star Wars: The Clone Wars:
Total Episodes: 121
Episodes in the 2010s: 91
Air Dates: 2008-Present
IMDB Rating: 8.1
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 7

Star Wars: Rebels:
Total Episodes: 75
Episodes in the 2010s: 75
Air Dates: 2014-2018
IMDB Rating: 8.0
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 4

Lego Star Wars: Freemaker Adventures:
Total Episodes: 26

IMDB Rating: 7.6
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 1

Star Wars: Forces of Destiny:

Star Wars: Resistance:
Total Episodes: 30
Episodes in the 2010s: 30
Air Dates: 2018-Present
IMDB Rating: 4.8
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 0

Disney not only purchased Lucasfilm and the Star Wars franchise but wasted no time in churning out 5 feature films and 5 main animated series as well as several Lego oriented projects. With over 250 episodes in total during the decade what separates this franchise from some of the ones listed prior is the shear critical acclaim we have seen here. Freemaker currently sites at a 7.6, Rebels at 8.0 and Clone Wars at 8.1 on IMDB. Rebels were listed as the 41st best-animated series by Ranker and Clone Wars on 24th. Clone Wars has also rated the 16th best series by IndieWire.

Top 10 Children’s Animated Series of the Decade:

#10: The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That

Total Episodes: 80
Episodes in the 2010s: 80
Air Dates: 2010-2018
IMDB Rating: 6.6
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 0

The Cat in the Hat might have a zero in the awards column above but that is simply due to the type of awards that were considered for this list. Martin Short and the young voices of this series were highly decorated for their vocal work, however. This series debuted in 2010 and it’s final episode aired in the fall of 2018. If that doesn’t warrant a spot on this list I’m not sure what does!

#9: Bubble Guppies

Total Episodes: 84
Episodes in the 2010s: 84
Air Dates: 2011-2016
IMDB Rating: 6.6
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 5

Bubble Guppies not only aired episodes for 6 straight years throughout the decade but was also renewed and started airing new episodes in 2019. With 5 Emmy and Annie nominations for best series in its age group this series definitely makes a case for being named among the best of the decade.

#8: WordGirl

Total Episodes: 130
Episodes in the 2010s: 84
Air Dates: 2007-2015
IMDB Rating: 6.8
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 3

Although it debuted back in 2007, WordGirl still had 65% of its episodes air during the decade in question and was a steady force for over half the decade in the first run and the remainder of the decade in rerun/syndication. This spinoff from Maya and Miguel definitely put its stamp on the decade.

#7: Dinosaur Train

Total Episodes: 94
Episodes in the 2010s: 77
Air Dates: 2009-Present
IMDB Rating: 6.6
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 3

A personal favorite of mine, Dinosaur Train is just another in the long line of successful shows from the world of Jim Henson. With 2018 being the ONLY year in the entire decade that did not see a new episode air from this series I don’t think there’s any arguing of its place on this list.

#6: Peg + Cat

Total Episodes: 63
Episodes in the 2010s: 63
Air Dates: 2013-2018
IMDB Rating: 7.9
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 6

Peg + Cat was nominated for a Daytime Emmy in every year of its existence including being nominated for Oustanding Pre-School Children’s Animated Program in four straight years. With a 7.9 rating on IMDB, this series was both popular and critically acclaimed throughout the decade.

#5: Wild Kratts

Total Episodes: 146
Episodes in the 2010s: 146
Air Dates: 2011-Present
IMDB Rating: 7.7
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 1

It may have only garnered one of the awards considered for this list but Wild Kratts aired more episodes in this category throughout the decade than every other series on this list except for one. That and a great IMDB rating is enough to warrant this show a Top 5 finish.

#4: Sofia the First

Total Episodes: 109
Episodes in the 2010s: 109
Air Dates: 2012-2018
IMDB Rating: 7.0
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 4

Less than 40 shows throughout the decade aired more than 100 episodes and Sofia the First not only belongs to that group but also aired episodes in seven years of the ten considered. If that wasn’t enough it impacts continues to live on through its spin-off series, Elena of Avalor which has amassed more than 60 episodes itself thus far.

#3: Doc McStuffins

Total Episodes: 127
Episodes in the 2010s: 127
Air Dates: 2012-Present
IMDB Rating: 6.8
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 3

Airing episodes in 8 of the 10 years throughout the decade and logging 127 episodes, third-most in this category there is no denying the influence Doc had on this time period. Much like Dora in decades before Doc has become iconic for youngsters of this generation.

#2: Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood

Total Episodes: 105
Episodes in the 2010s: 105
Air Dates: 2012-Present
IMDB Rating: 7.4
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 1

Perhaps fittingly for a decade that saw major motion pictures and documentaries on Mr. Rogers in its final years, we also received a series that was ever-present and influenced by the genius himself. Critically it deserved a lot more than the 1 awards that it received from those considered for this list. Another member of the 100 episode club, I think we can all agree on its place amongst the decades best.

#1: PAW Patrol

Total Episodes: 182
Episodes in the 2010s: 182
Air Dates: 2013-Present
IMDB Rating: 6.4
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 2

Although slightly lower for its IMDB rating and the number of awards it received, the popularity of PAW Patrol cannot be denied. It also doesn’t hurt that at 182 episodes and counting, it is not only the most in this category but also in the Top 10 for all categories for the number of episodes aired during the decade. No, Surprise here that these canine cops take the top spot!

Top 10 Animated Series of the Decade based on Films:

#10: Monsters vs Aliens: The Series

Total Episodes: 26
Episodes in the 2010s: 26
Air Dates: 2013-2014
IMDB Rating: 5.8
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 1

I could see a lot of people making a claim that Monsters vs Aliens is not deserving to be on this list and they may have a solid case to prosecute with that thought. A blip on the radar this series had just enough to slip in and take the #10 spot.

#9: Big Hero 6: The Series

Total Episodes: 40
Episodes in the 2010s: 40
Air Dates: 2017-Present
IMDB Rating: 7.2
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 1

A film that just begged for the television series treatment, Big Hero 6: The Series debuted in 2017 and is still presently airing episodes. Nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program, Baymax and the gang did just enough to make this list.

#8: The 7D

Total Episodes: 44
Episodes in the 2010s: 44
Air Dates: 2014-2016
IMDB Rating: 5.6
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 2

The 7D deserved a longer run than 2 seasons for sure. This series was loads of fun and a very fresh and creative spin on the source material. Boosted by the legendary voices of Bill Farmer, Billy West, Maurice LaMarche, Jess Harnell and Kevin Michael Richardson this series was an easy selection to be highlighted here!

#7: Jake and the Neverland Pirates

Total Episodes: 114
Episodes in the 2010s: 114
Air Dates: 2011-2016
IMDB Rating: 5.6
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 5

The flagship show of Disney Junior, Jake, and the Neverland Pirates was full of educational content, role models, and great messages for kids. A fun take on the classic characters this series also aired the 2nd most episodes among this genre for the decade and garnered almost a half dozen nominations and awards for being the best series for its demographic.

#6: The Lion Guard

Total Episodes: 74
Episodes in the 2010s: 74
Air Dates: 2016-2019
IMDB Rating: 6.4
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 1

The Lion Guard was old reliable during the second half of the decade. The interesting take of a Lion King meets Avengers-style series proved very successful for Disney for some years.

#5: Tangled: The Series

Total Episodes: 52
Episodes in the 2010s: 52
Air Dates: 2017-Present
IMDB Rating: 7.6
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 1

Tangled the Series comes across as one of the top 3 rated shows in this class from IMDB which more than warrants it opening up our Top 5.

#4: All Hail King Julien

Total Episodes: 78
Episodes in the 2010s: 78
Air Dates: 2014-2017
IMDB Rating: 7.2
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 3

Another highly-rated series for this genre, All Hail King Julien helped establish again how much more successful Dreamworks can be with television series compared to their actual feature films!

#3: Penguins of Madagascar

Total Episodes: 149
Episodes in the 2010s: 107
Air Dates: 2008-2015
IMDB Rating: 7.6
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 8

Penguins of Madagascar may have debuted in 2008 but went on to be a dominant force in the first half of the decade. Tied for the 2nd highest IMDB rating of the group and one of only 3 series to air more than 100 episodes in this decade. Penguins of Madagascar’s 8 awards also rank it in the Top 10 of ALL series considered for this article!

#2: Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness

Total Episodes: 80
Episodes in the 2010s: 80
Air Dates: 2011-2016
IMDB Rating: 7.1
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 8

Another Dreamworks gem, Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness definitely checks all of the boxes. A 7.1 rating (top 5 for this category), 8 award wins/nominations (top 10 overall), airing for more than half of the decade and 80 total episodes. This one was a no brainer.

#1: Dreamworks Dragons

Total Episodes: 118
Episodes in the 2010s: 118
Air Dates: 2012-2018
IMDB Rating: 8.0
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 4

The only series in the group to eclipse an 8.0 rating Dragons proved to be every bit as successful as the film series it is based on. A rare 100+ episode series that aired for almost the entire decade, Dragons flew past the competition in this category fairly easily.

Top 10 Superhero Animated Series of the Decade:

#10: Iron Man: Armored Adventures

Total Episodes: 52
Episodes in the 2010s: 27
Air Dates: 2009-2012
IMDB Rating: 6.5
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 0

Armored Adventures snuck in for the last spot among the Superhero cartoons this past decade. Even though it barely had more episodes this decade than it did in 2009 alone it’s 6.5 rating and relative decent standing among superhero fans it did just enough to stake its claim here.

#9: DC Superhero Girls

Total Episodes: 32
Episodes in the 2010s: 32
Air Dates: 2019-Present
IMDB Rating: 6.9
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 0

Although it only had time for 1 season and 32 episodes right at the end of the decade, the fact that the series was based on a web series that numbered 112 episodes and aired for half of the decade helps us make the case for DC Superhero Girls to make the list. It was a very cool take on the genre and a nice way to highlight the great female characters that have existed over the years.

#8: Guardians of the Galaxy

Total Episodes: 77
Episodes in the 2010s: 77
Air Dates: 2015-2019
IMDB Rating: 7.4
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 0

With a 7.4 IMDB rating that would be good enough to land GotG in the top 5 in this group. 77 episodes would also put it in the top 5 for total episodes within the decade. So, I suppose one could make a case for it being a little higher here but I’ll let you be the judge of that as you see all of the shows that follow.

#7: Teen Titans Go!

Total Episodes: 269
Episodes in the 2010s: 269
Air Dates: 2013-Present
IMDB Rating: 5.2
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 6

Teen Titans Go! seems like the most divisive show in the group. It has many fans and many detractors as is evidenced by its lower IMDB score of 5.1 here. However, it aired more episodes throughout the decade than all other shows but one. It also aired episodes in 7 of the 10 years during the decade.

#6: Green Lantern: The Animated Series

Total Episodes: 26
Episodes in the 2010s: 26
Air Dates: 2012-2013
IMDB Rating: 8.1
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 2

Although airing the fewest episodes of the group, Green Lantern comes in with the 3rd highest IMDB rating and was listed fairly high on multiple superhero rankings that I researched while compiling this list. Had it aired in more years and more total episodes this would have probably been a shoe-in for a Top 5 spot.

#5: Justice League Action

Total Episodes: 52
Episodes in the 2010s: 52
Air Dates: 2016-2018
IMDB Rating: 7.7
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 1

Justice League action doubles the episode count of Green Lantern and only sees a small dip in its IMDB rating. IndieWire also rated it as the 18th best overall animated series of the decade.

#4: Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes

Total Episodes: 52
Episodes in the 2010s: 52
Air Dates: 2010-2013
IMDB Rating: 8.3
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 1

With an 8.3 Earth’s Mightiest Heroes finds itself as one of three 8.0 or higher rated shows within this genre and in the #2 spot overall. Another situation where if it had aired for more years or more episodes it could have easily made a case for a Top 3 finish.

#3: Ultimate Spider-Man

Total Episodes: 104
Episodes in the 2010s: 104
Air Dates: 2012-2017
IMDB Rating: 7.1
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 0

Although a slightly lower rating than some of the other shows we have discussed, a 7.1 is still pretty dang respectable. It may not have had much in the way of award nominations or wins but it was ranked as the 44th best-animated series of the decade in an overall list on Ranker. It also aired 104 episodes that were the 4th most in this genre as well as airing episodes throughout 6 of the years during the decade.

#2: Avengers: Assemble

Total Episodes: 126
Episodes in the 2010s: 126
Air Dates: 2013-2019
IMDB Rating: 7.0
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 1

Very similar to Ultimate Spider-Man, Avengers Assemble hovers around the 7 marks for IMDB and aired over 100 episodes. Specifically, at 126, that would be the second most for this group. It also aired episodes in 7 of the 10 years and was definitely a presence in the decade to correspond with the MCU that dominated the film landscape.

#1: Young Justice

Total Episodes: 72
Episodes in the 2010s: 72
Air Dates: 2010-2013, 2019
IMDB Rating: 8.7
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 4

Young Justice dominated the cartoon superhero genre for the first 3-4 years of the decade and then made an impressive comeback in the final year. With an astonishing 8.7 IMDB rating that was easily the top of its class. TV Guide also listed it as the 2nd best-animated series of 2010.

Top 10 Prime-time Animated Series of the Decade:

#10: Uncle Grandpa

Total Episodes: 153
Episodes in the 2010s: 153
Air Dates: 2013-2018
IMDB Rating: 4.2
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 2

The 10th spot on most of these groupings is a bit of a mixed bag or wild card spot if you will. That is no different from Uncle Grandpa which is, on one hand, going to have the lowest rating in the genre for the finalists but also with 153 episodes found itself in the top 10 overall for all series as far as the total number of episodes aired. It was also airing for more than half the decade.

#9: Mad

Total Episodes: 103
Episodes in the 2010s: 103
Air Dates: 2010-2013
IMDB Rating: 5.7
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 3

Garnering 2 Annie Nominations as well as 1 Emmy nomination, Mad was a force early on in the decade. Another member of the 100 episode club didn’t hurt its ranking here either. It doesn’t have the wide critical acclaim that the rest of the shows in this grouping may have but I believe it’s done enough to warrant it’s spot overall.

#8: The Cleveland Show

Total Episodes: 88
Episodes in the 2010s: 79
Air Dates: 2009-2013
IMDB Rating: 5.5
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 1

One of the successful spinoffs of the Family Guy, the Cleveland Show may have debuted in 2009 but aired almost 90% of its episodes in this decade. It garnered one prime time Emmy nomination as well as securing the 26th spot on the overall animated series of the decade listing on Ranker.

#7: American Dad

Total Episodes: 276
Episodes in the 2010s: 180
Air Dates: 2005-Present
IMDB Rating: 7.3
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 3

At 180 episodes during the decade, American Dad ranks in the Top Ten for most episodes in that time span overall for all Animated Series. It also aired an episode in every single year throughout the decade. A decent IMDB rating and 3 award nominations also help its standing. Just think how high it would rank if we were able to include the other 96 episodes that came before the decade as well as many more awards. Ranker listed it as the 6th best-animated series of the decade regardless.

#6: Robot Chicken

Total Episodes: 189
Episodes in the 2010s: 109
Air Dates: 2005-Present
IMDB Rating: 7.7
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 12

Robot Chicken checks all of the boxes. It had a great rating on IMDB, aired over 100 episodes during the decade, and with a dozen, awards tally that ranks in the top 5 of ALL animated series in the decade. It won 3 Primetime Emmy’s during the decade for Outstanding Animated Program and was nominated another 6 times. 2017 was the ONLY year it was not nominated for that award. It was the 12th best-animated series of the decade according to Ranker and the 22nd best-animated series of the decade according to Vanity Fair. Hmmm, maybe I should have this one ranked even higher now that I think about it!

#5: Big Mouth

Total Episodes: 31
Episodes in the 2010s: 31
Air Dates: 2017-Present
IMDB Rating: 8.0
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 4

A little bit later to the party for the decade, Netflix’s Big Mouth became an instant contender after its debut in 2017. It currently has an excellent 8.0 IMDB rating and has been nominated for the Best General Audience Animated Television/Broadcast Production Annie Award in every year of its existence. It currently sits at 43rd on Rankers Top Animated Series of the decade. It was also ranked 8th overall for Vanity Fair. TV Guide ranked Big Mouth as the best Animated series of the year in 2017.

#4: Rick and Morty

Total Episodes: 36
Episodes in the 2010s: 36
Air Dates: 2013-Present
IMDB Rating: 9.3
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 6

Granted Rick and Morty have the second-fewest episodes out of all of the shows within this grouping, however, no one can deny the cultural impact this show had on the decade. The thing that separates this show, as well as Big Mouth from shows such as Robot Chicken which we just discussed, is that Robot Chicken, as well as American Dad, aren’t strictly shows from this decade whereas if you ask someone about Rick and Morty, they are 100% going to identify it as a 2010s show. It’s 9.3!! IMDB rating is easily the best rating we will see in this group. It’s also aired episodes in 5 of the 10 years. IndieWire ranked it as the 6th best-animated series of the decade, Vanity Fair as the 5th best, Ranker as the #1 show of the decade and TV Guide ranked it as the 2nd best-animated show of 2013.

#3: Archer

Total Episodes: 110
Episodes in the 2010s: 109
Air Dates: 2009-Present
IMDB Rating: 8.6
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 10

Its first episode may have aired in 2009 but every other episode of this series has aired over the course of this decade. Ten overall awards and nominations put it in Top 5 territory overall for the decade. It also has an incredible 8.6 rating on IMDB. IndieWire ranks it as the 5th best Animated series of the decade and it comes in 2nd on Ranker’s list. Archer is a unique show that deserves to be watched and talked about by more people than it currently is!

#2: Bob’s Burgers

Total Episodes: 182
Episodes in the 2010s: 182
Air Dates: 2011-Present
IMDB Rating: 8.1
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 23

Bob’s Burgers has aired episodes every year this past decade except for the first. A rating over 8.0 on IMDB and more award nominations and awards over the course of the decade than any other show overall (it actually tied with one other). With 182 total episodes, it also ranks in the Top 10 for total episodes aired. As far as top lists it ranked 12th for Vanity Fair, 4th for IndieWire, 4th on Ranker and TV Guide ranked it as the #1 show for 2011. Bob’s Burgers is easily one of the most symbolic and prevalent animated series of the decade overall.

#1: Bojack Horseman

Total Episodes: 69
Episodes in the 2010s: 69
Air Dates: 2014-Present
IMDB Rating: 8.6
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 8

Although it only aired 69 episodes during the decade which is good for 3rd lowest amongst this genre, Bojack Horseman received a ton of critical and fan support. Bojack Horseman tied with Archer as the 2nd highest IMDB rating among this group. It was ranked 23rd by Ranker for the decade, 2nd by Vanity Fair and 1st by IndieWire. It was also chosen as the #1 show in 2014 by TV Guide.

Top 15 Animated Series of the Decade based on the previous Series:

#15: Alvinnn!!! and the Chipmunks

Total Episodes: 91
Episodes in the 2010s: 91
Air Dates: 2015-Present
IMDB Rating: 4.5
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 0

The chipmunks aired 91 episodes over the course of the decade which makes it the 6th most among this group. That slightly makes up for its lack of critical success and low IMDB rating.

#14: Pound Puppies

Total Episodes: 65
Episodes in the 2010s: 65
Air Dates: 2010-2013
IMDB Rating: 6.3
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 1

Pound Puppies didn’t have the staying power or critical acclaim but had a decent IMDB rating and a decent amount of episodes. It was an interesting take on the classic 80s show.

#13: The Tom & Jerry Show

Total Episodes: 74
Episodes in the 2010s: 74
Air Dates: 2014-2019
IMDB Rating: 6.9
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 0

The Tom & Jerry Show received a very respectable 6.9 IMDB rating in a genre that often receives lower scores overall. It aired episodes in more than half of the total years throughout the decade as well. I’ve seen much worse shows within this franchise throughout the years and this was a pleasant addition to the said franchise.

#12: Powerpuff Girls

Total Episodes: 122
Episodes in the 2010s: 122
Air Dates: 2016-Present
IMDB Rating: 3.5
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 2

Perhaps the lowest IMDB rating overall that can partly be attributed to some controversial issues that arose in regards to this show. It still provided an update on one of the most iconic series to air in the 1990s. It did last 122 episodes (so far) and does still have a decent fan following overall.

#11: Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle

Total Episodes: 26
Episodes in the 2010s: 26
Air Dates: 2018-Present
IMDB Rating: 5.4
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 0

The new version of Rocky and Bullwinkle could have been included within my list of Hidden Gems because I seriously don’t think this series received the love it deserved. This was a very intelligently crafted reboot of the timeless classic.

#10: Wacky Races

Total Episodes: 78
Episodes in the 2010s: 78
Air Dates: 2017-Present
IMDB Rating: 5.8
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 0

Another low rated show that was a whole lot of fun. A new take on the Hanna-Barbera classic was sorely needed and I think this show was hitting on all cylinders (pun intended)

#9: The Garfield Show

Total Episodes: 109
Episodes in the 2010s: 79
Air Dates: 2009-2016
IMDB Rating: 5.3
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 0

It’s hard to call a series that aired over 100 episodes in total a hidden gem but again this is a show that deserves more attention. It aired in episodes during 7 of the 10 years throughout the decade and in time hopefully will get the respect it so much deserves.

#8: Danger Mouse

Total Episodes: 99
Episodes in the 2010s: 99
Air Dates: 2015-Present
IMDB Rating: 7.2
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 0

A hidden gem from the 1980s, I was so excited when I learned that this series was being rebooted. I was not disappointed either. This series is great and at a 7.2 rating with nearly 100 episodes so far, no one can argue its place among this list.

#7: Muppet Babies

Total Episodes: 24
Episodes in the 2010s: 24
Air Dates: 2018-Present
IMDB Rating: 7.1
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 1

Had this series debuted a few years earlier there is a good chance it may have been Top 5 material. As it is the jury is still somewhat out on this one but early returns so far are very promising.

#6: G.I. Joe Renegades

Total Episodes: 26
Episodes in the 2010s: 26
Air Dates: 2010-2011
IMDB Rating: 7.0
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 1

I get it, this show was only one for one season and had a measly 26 episodes. However, G.I. Joe Renegades deserved so much better and more than that. It was so well thought out and carefully written and paced that it really is a shame that the powers that be didn’t have the patience to let it thrive.

#5: Thundercats

Total Episodes: 26
Episodes in the 2010s: 26
Air Dates: 2011-2012
IMDB Rating: 7.8
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 1

Just like G.I. Joe Renegades this series deserved a longer shelf life. It’s 7.8 ratings is all of the proof you need to back up that statement. Thundercats recaptured the same magic that the iconic 80s series had and left us all wanting more!

#4: She-Ra: Princesses of Power

Total Episodes: 39
Episodes in the 2010s: 39
Air Dates: 2018-Present
IMDB Rating: 7.3
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 0

Coming out of nowhere, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power may have sparked a new age for the Masters of the Universe franchise. Not only was it successful in and of its own but now there are talks for multiple He-Man series on the horizon. This series provided a breath of fresh air to the franchise and has done a great job of providing strong female characters into the world of animation.

#3: Sonic Boom

Total Episodes: 104
Episodes in the 2010s: 104
Air Dates: 2014-2017
IMDB Rating: 7.1
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 2

One of only 4 series in this group to air over 100 episodes, Sonic Boom seemed to garner the respect and love from a sometimes tough to please fandom. A decent rating and a decent shelf life are enough to garner a top 5 slot for this series.

#2: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic

Total Episodes: 222
Episodes in the 2010s: 222
Air Dates: 2010-2019
IMDB Rating: 7.6
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 3

Perhaps the most buzzworthy series of the decade or at least one of the most talked-about, no one can deny that when people think of animated series from the 2010s that My Little Pony will always be one of the first series mentioned. With 222 total episodes during the decade not only was MLP the highest episode total for this genre but also in the top 5 overall. It aired episodes in every year of the decade and was named the 20th best-animated series of the decade by IndieWire.

#1: The Legend of Korra

Total Episodes: 52
Episodes in the 2010s: 52
Air Dates: 2012-2014
IMDB Rating: 8.5
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 6

Legend of Korra may not be able to compare to many of the other series just listed off when it comes to years aired or total episode count. However, fan and critic responses say everything that needs to be said. An 8.5 IMDB rating goes along with being named the 20th best-animated series of the decade by Ranker, 16th best by Vanity Fair, 8th best by IndieWire and the best series of 2012 by TV Guide.

Top 20 General Animated Series of the Decade:

#20: Adventures of Puss in Boots

Total Episodes: 78
Episodes in the 2010s: 78
Air Dates: 2015-2018
IMDB Rating: 6.7
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 0

With 78 episodes and a decent IMDB rating the Adventures of Puss in Boots might not be in the running for the top show of the decade but it’s earned its mention to be in the Top 20 of this category.

#19: Lego Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu

Total Episodes: 128
Episodes in the 2010s: 128
Air Dates: 2011-Present
IMDB Rating: 6.8
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 0

It may not be incredibly critically acclaimed but what the Masters of Spinjitzu have in their favor when it comes to this listing is staying power. With 128 episodes under its belt, it finds itself in the Top 20 overall for the decade. Also, counting the pilot episodes it aired an episode in every year of the decade except for 2010 and 2013.

#18: Bunnicula

Total Episodes: 104
Episodes in the 2010s: 104
Air Dates: 2016-2018
IMDB Rating: 7.1
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 0

Only eight shows in this general category can boast over 100 episodes AND over a 7.0 IMDB rating so although it may be missing the critical acclaim to rank very high, Bunnicula has done enough to earn its spot on the list overall.

#17: Generator Rex

Total Episodes: 60
Episodes in the 2010s: 60
Air Dates: 2010-2013
IMDB Rating: 7.5
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 1

Generator Rex has a modest number of episodes and an above-average IMDB rating but what lands in this slot is more so it’s fan base which it was able to develop over just a few short years.

#16: Clarence

Total Episodes: 130
Episodes in the 2010s: 130
Air Dates: 2014-2018
IMDB Rating: 6.5

Another series that finds itself in the Top 20 overall for a number of episodes during the decade, Clarence also has an Annie nomination to boost its credentials.

#15: Harvey Beaks

Total Episodes: 52
Episodes in the 2010s: 52
Air Dates: 2015-2017
IMDB Rating: 7.0
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 1

If Harvey Beaks had a little longer shelf life it may have been able to make a case for higher standing. As it is you could make a case for it to be anywhere from 15 to 20 on this list interchangeably.

#14: Wander over Yonder

Total Episodes: 43
Episodes in the 2010s: 43
Air Dates: 2013-2016
IMDB Rating: 7.1
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 5

Wander over Yonder is another show that didn’t amass an impressive episode title but it did air episodes in four different years, had a decent IMDB rating AND was critically acclaimed. Overall the show received an Emmy nomination and an Emmy win as well as 6 Annie Nominations and 2 wins.

#13: Milo Murphy’s Law

Total Episodes: 40
Episodes in the 2010s: 40
Air Dates: 2016-Present
IMDB Rating: 7.6
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 3

Milo Murphy’s Law marks a shift in this Top 20 countdown as its the first show to surpass the 7.5 IMDB rating mark and every show throughout the rest of the countdown except two are at or over that mark. It also had some minor critical acclaim when it comes to awards.

#12: Over the Garden Wall

Total Episodes: 10
Episodes in the 2010s: 10
Air Dates: 2014
IMDB Rating: 8.8
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 5

Some may argue that Over the Garden Wall only aired 10 episodes in a single year during the decade and hardly qualifies even to be looked at as a series. However, it was nominated and won for Outstanding Animated Program by the Primetime Emmy Awards in that year as well as being nominated for an Annie and BTVA award as well. With it’s 8.8 IMDB rating it is the second highest-rated series in this category and it was named the 29th best-animated series of the decade by Vanity Fair.

#11: The Deep

Total Episodes: 52
Episodes in the 2010s: 52
Air Dates: 2015-Present
IMDB Rating: 7.9
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 1

Ok perhaps this was strictly a Canadian series but it still warrants at least a mention on this list and with more than 50 episodes and nearly an 8.0 IMDB rating, The Deep just missed out on the top 10 territories for this category.

#10: The Loud House

Total Episodes: 93
Episodes in the 2010s: 93
Air Dates: 2016-Present
IMDB Rating: 7.3
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 3

One of the two shows in the Top Ten with lower than a 7.5 rating, The Loud House wasn’t far off. A dominant series in the final four years of the decade, Loud house has multiple award nominations and wins including the Best New Television Series by BTVA and Outstanding Children’s Animated series by the Daytime Emmy Awards. It also was JUST shy of 100 episodes at this point. Ranker also rated this series as the 36th best-animated series of the decade overall.

#9: OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes

Total Episodes: 112
Episodes in the 2010s: 112
Air Dates: 2017-2019
IMDB Rating: 7.1
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 1

I am probably a bit biased on this one but I just love the way that OK K.O acknowledges and plays with the past in a completely modern way with having all kinds of guest spots and cameos from retro characters and series. With 112 episodes and over a 7.0 rating it finds itself in rare company among this list.

#8: Star vs the Forces of Evil

Total Episodes: 77
Episodes in the 2010s: 77
Air Dates: 2015-2019
IMDB Rating: 8.1

Over 75 episodes and over an 8.0 rating are solid cases for Star vs. the Forces of Evil to be Top 10 material. It also was ranked the 30th best Animated Series of the decade by Ranker as well as being voted as the 2nd best series from 2015 by TV Guide. It also aired episodes in five of the 10 years during the decade.

Total Award Nominations/Wins: 6

With various Emmy and Annie nominations and wins for Best Animated Program, 62% of the series episodes aired in this decade. #4: Regular Show

IMDB Rating: 8.6
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 23

Tied for the most awards love overall and leading the pack as the number 1 show overall for a number of episodes that aired over the course of the decade, it’s no surprise that Adventure Time lands the top spot in this section. A great IMDB rating didn’t hurt either. Adventure Time finds itself in the following positions when it comes to the Best Animated Series of the decade. Number 10 by Vanity Fair, #9 for Ranker, #8 for Indie Wire and as the best series overall for 2010 by TV Guide.

My Personal List of Hidden Gems:

Total Episodes: 23
Episodes in the 2010s: 23
Air Dates: 2016-2018
IMDB Rating: 6.9/7.6 (IMDB lists each season as separate series)
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 1

This series was not seen by enough folks even though it is streaming on Netflix. A diverse voice cast including the likes of Lacey Chabert, Mikey Kelley, and Mark Hamill amongst many other legendary voices this show is a lot of fun. The mythology and fantasy elements had me wanting more. I highly recommend this series regardless of its short shelf life.

Total Episodes: 23
Episodes in the 2010s: 23
Air Dates: 2017-2019
IMDB Rating: 7.8
Total Award Nominations/Wins: 5

Critically adored with multiple Annie and Emmy Awards, this comic book-based series was a very short yet very sweet fantasy adventure that left me wanting even more. A who’s who of Voice acting with Kari Wahlgren, Jim Cummings, Dee Bradley Baker, Steve Blum, Corey Burton, Tom Kenny, Kevin Michael Richardson and the young lead Andre Robinson, this Amazon original should be sought out immediately by any fan of animation.

Total Episodes: 52

IMDB Rating: 8.5

Perhaps not quite as hidden as the other picks in my list here I still wanted to take the chance to highlight this fun series from DreamWorks. Perhaps it will live on thanks to one of the final starring roles from Anton Yelchin before his unfortunate death. (which resulted in Emile Hirsch having to take over the lead role in later episodes. This series is a great mixture of comedy, drama, and adventure worth checking out. Don’t take my word for it, the IMDB community clearly agrees with a spectacular 8.5 rating!

Another hidden gem from 2017, Adult Swim’s Apollo Gauntlet deserved a better fate. Perhaps I was too much the intended demographic but as someone who heavily consumes 80s action cartoons, this was a perfect comedy take on that genre. Myles Langlois the series creator and writer not to mention one of the voice actors deserves more work for sure!

Total Episodes: 10

For the life of me, I cannot understand why this Comedy Central gem didn’t last more than the 10 episodes that it aired in 2017. It was a breath of fresh air when it comes to the MacFarlane style dominated adult prime time cartoon landscape. Based on sketches from TripTank this series was very cleverly written and many times hilarious. I was not surprised at all to see it with a very high 8.0 rating on IMDB.  It will be forgotten by the annals of time and that’s a shame.

Total Episodes: 52

I wasn’t expecting much from this series based on the trading card game but I came away pleasantly surprised. They did a good job creating the world and developing multiple interesting personalities on all sides of the spectrum. A star-studded cast of the likes of Dee Bradley Baker, Grey DeLisle, John Dimaggio, Phil Lamarr, Jason Marsden, David Sobolov, James Arnold Taylor and Kari Wahlgren among others is led by a very good Scott Wolf. This show might have flown by undetected by many but with an IMDB score of 7.1, it’s still worth a viewing.

Total Episodes: 26

Robot and Monster is a show that deserved a longer shelf life. It was an intelligently written comedy series starring Curtis Armstrong and Harland Williams that I highly recommend. It only aired for 26 episodes but that just means you don’t have to invest a ton of your time. With a supporting cast including Maurice LaMarche, Jeff Bennett, Cree Summer, Megan Hilty, Jonathan Slavin and many more this series is just pure fun.
