Through the Mind of a Podcast Editor
Hello all and welcome to a NEW Daily Blog series from me… TFG1Mike! The idea here is for me to write something, anything, once a day for 365 days. From January 1, 2019 to December 31, 2019. In my 28th entry, I’ll be talking about my podcast editing style.

I’m not sure how other podcasters do their editing, but my style is most likely very different than everyone else’s style. Everyone has told me in the last ten years, that once you get good enough at editing, you can do it lickity split, no shit. Well apparently, I’m not that good. I normally take 1 to 3 hours to edit any podcast that is 30 minutes to an hour. This is partly because I listen to every second of the episode as I go along. Honestly as I’ve reached 10 years of podcasting, at this point I must admit that I do this, because most likely, I’ve forgotten what was said in that episode of any podcast. IF I have remembered the recording, I do it so I can add in little nuances. As you see above, this was the introduction Ryan aka Nightbeat did on episode 337. Behind the scenes there were silent moments, that I decided to cut out, and add in the Unicron lines, where they were appropriate.
I do these little things, in my own mind, to enhance the episode. Over the years I have shortened the length o the clips I add in. Sometimes when I first started podcasting, I’d use 2 minute clips or longer at times. There are only the VERY RARE occasion that I’ll do that today. When it comes to the actual leveling of the audio, this is one aspect of audio editing, I’m still learning. With each episode I’ve recorded over the last ten years, I continue to learn the leveling technique. I have no idea why I can’t master it yet. This also goes towards the fact that I can’t edit two channel audio. I’ve tried, but it’s just too foreign a concept for me. I need ALL voices on one track. I’m not opposed to learning the two track editing style, but my podcast editing sessions are already long enough as it is. As I said earlier, I use clips to enhance or make references in episodes. I’ll allude to a quote from a cartoon, movie, or something, and then put said piece of audio in.
I find that where I excel in podcasting is review shows. I love reviewing cartoons, movies, TV shows, and so on. I edit the cartoon review podcasts that we do here at GCRN in the style of how the show aired originally on TV. Meaning I use that show’s theme song as the opener, We review multiple episodes of a cartoon in one podcast, and I add in clips throughout each cartoon episode we talk about. We break after the reviews are done, throw in a few podcast ads of other shows, come back to close the show, and then play the show’s ending theme…. if there is one. Most have them, but ya never know. There are times when we end up… or I should say… I end up screwing up the ending of a show, in the editing I’ll go back, fix it, and add in more clips. Whatever makes the end funnier is normally what I go for. There have been times when it’s taken me two days to edit a podcast, and I think the longest editing session I had was 12 straight hours of editing. That 12 hours of editing ended up being a 2:12:46 podcast. It was SHOWTIME SYNERGY – EP 23 – Truly Outrageous Top 30 Countdown! I’m by no means the best at podcasting, editing, or any of it, but I do it, because I love it, and it keeps me active online.
