TFG1MIKE 365 – 2019 Day 55

The Voice Season 16 – Blind Auditions Part 1

Hello all and welcome to a NEW Daily Blog series from me… TFG1Mike! The idea here is for me to write something, anything, once a day for 365 days. From January 1, 2019 to December 31, 2019. In my 56th entry, I’ll be talking about The Voice’s Season 16 premiere episode. I’ve been a fan and I’ve been watching The Voice on NBC since Season 2. However lately I’ve grown weary of the show. Adam and Blake just wear on my soul. They have been there too damn long. Especially with the debacle from Adam last season. I wrote about that on Day 3 of this 365 series. I’m writing this 10 minutes after the first episode aired Monday February 25, 2019. It seems that with some of these blog entries, I’ve become a late night writer, when my initial goal was to be an early morning writer. I will not be writing up Voice blogs every week, I’m only doing the first two nights of the Blinds. I spent the entirety of Season 4 I think… writing up weekly reviews of The Voice, that was just too taxing on me.

NIGHT 1

This season on night one of the Blind Auditions there were 12 performers. I will NOT be talking about all 12, just the ones I liked. Think of it as me picking my own team for The Voice. Gyth Rigdon was the first to have us “Drift Away” with him. I’ve always loved this song, and this guy did an amazing job with it. New coach John Legend got the first block on the first night of the new season. Gyth ended up choosing Team Blake.

Maelyn Jarmon was the next performer to grace the stage, and she gave a powerful performance of Sting’s “Fields of Gold”. I don’t know if I have ever heard anyone sing this song, besides Sting himself. I’m sure it has happened, but Maelynn’s version is a breath of fresh air, and the performance was very moving. She ended up choosing John Legend as her coach.

Karen Galera was the third performer of the night. She came out singing “Mi Corazoncito” which translates to “My Little Heart” Kelly Clarkson hit her button for Karen not even 3 seconds into the song. John Legend also turned around, and although I’m like Blake, I don’t know what she was singing, … I still realized how beautiful the song was, and Karen’s voice is amazing. She did end up choosing Team Kelly, and I have to say I don’t think I’ve ever seen Kelly fight so hard for an artist.

Rizzi Myers was the seventh performer of the night, and she came out with a powerful performance of “Breathin'”. There are times when I hear certain songs and think… I love that, without knowing the original artist. I had no idea that this was an Ariana Grande song until I looked it up for this entry. I love the sultriness of Rizzi’s voice, and I can’t wait to hear the other songs Kelly will give her. Obviously she chose Kelly, and there was even a moment of them connecting on a time that Rizzi met her years ago.

Matthew Johnson was the final performer of night one. He came out with a honest to god, amazing, and stellar performance of Kirk Franklin’s “I Smile”. Matthew’s tone was wonderful, and his power shines through. Matthew ended up being the first four chair turn of the season. Matthew chose John Legend as his coach. I couldn’t have seen him with anyone else, and I can’t wait to hear all the other songs John has him singing.

NIGHT 2

Night 2 of the Blinds had 6 slots of artists, with one being the FIRST EVER trio of singers on The Voice. I liked the performances on night 2, but honestly the trio stole the whole show in my mind.

The Bundys a trio of siblings came out with a sweet rendition of “Closer to Fine” originally done by the Indigo Girls. It is well known that in the 16 seasons of The Voice Duos don’t get very far, and that might make you wonder just how far a trio can get? I loved their tones, the harmonizing was wonderful, and it’s three unique voices melted into one singular singing voice. Kelly and Blake turned around for them, and they chose Team Kelly. It will be very interesting to see how Kelly challenges these singers.

Klea Olson was the next artist I immediately paid attention to. Sadly she didn’t get a chair turn. I believe she even lost on The Voice Comeback stage a well. For those that don’t know since last season they have been doing this YouTube series called The Comeback Stage. It’ll eventually give one artist a chance to return to the show. Sadly that won’t be Klea, I was hoping she’d get one chair turn, as her performance of Alice Merton’s “No Roots” was really cool.

My take away from the first two episodes of the season is that I want either John or Kelly’s team to win the whole thing this year. I have liked some of the artists Adam and Blake have gotten, but I’m just so tired of them. I said to my wife as we were watching these episodes of The Voice, “Hopefully John or Kelly will steal whatever artist from Adam and Blake.” It’s not the artists I have an issue with obviously, it’s just Adam and Blake need to go. I want a whole new panel of coaches, with Kelly and John leading the way!

So far my voice team includes Gyth, Maelynn, Karen, Rizzi, Matthew, and The Bundys. So I have 2 choices each from Kelly and John, and only one from Blake. Obviously no team members that went with Adam are on my team. Again that’s not against the artists, it’s just the ones I absolutely enjoyed were not on Adam’s team.

Do you watch The Voice, if so why or why not? Do you watch all season long, or do you stop after say the Blind Auditions, Battles, or Knockouts? Let me know in the comments below!

Join me tomorrow morning February 26, 2019 as I’ll be writing about being stuck in the past or living in the now.
