Comic Review – Batman: Arkham City

Comic Review:

BATMAN: ARKHAM CITY

An entire section of Gotham that the villains have all to themselves you don’t say? Batman Arkham City is an awesome look at the time between the two hit video games!

THIS WILL BE A SPOILER FREE REVIEW:  as I believe any fan of the games or Batman in general should read it for themselves. I’ve been wanting to read this one for quite some time. I wanted to read it before I had even heard of Batman: Gates Of Gotham  One reason why I wanted to read it so badly, was that it is written by Paul Dini!! Let us start by getting the general info outta the way:

Synopsis:

Collecting the 5-issue miniseries, including five digital-first chapters. This story tells us what happens in between the hit video games Batman Arkham Asylum and Batman Arkham City.

WRITING:

One name drew me to reading this collected edition story. Paul Dini! Mr. Dini has always had an amazing writing style, and I’ve loved his writing in Batman stuff before. Mainly in BTAS, and other DCAU cartoons. Dini crafts a story that brings you into Batman’s world through the villains eyes, and so much more. Especially in this series. Because you have someone behind the scenes tugging at the strings of Mayor Sharp. One of the reasons why I love Dini’s writing so much is because I can see this story as a DC Universe animated feature, and hear the classic BTAS voices as the characters. Paul’s style of writing is so fluid and funny at times, and that’s a great thing to have in the dark world of Gotham City. The book shows us just how Arkham City came into being. The thought is the super villains and super criminals can have their own section of Gotham, because let’s face it EVERYONE  escapes from Arkham Asylum.

ART:

Carlos D’Anda does an amazing job capturing the tone and style of the games. I love the way the Batmobile and Bat Boat look in this, and I love how the game character designs seem to fit in so well with comic book style and flare. It seems that since I’ve started reading comics full time now, that every single time I see the Batmobile, I LOVE each new take on it. Granted the Batmobile I have seen in this, in the new 52 Batman, and all that are essentially the same. At the same time each artist takes their own liberies with the design of the Batmobile. Which I think is great. I love all the villain designs in this book, they are very dynamic and you can recognize each of your favorite rogues from Batman’s many villains.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

If you have played Arkham Asylum, and not Arkham City, you can and should read this. Even if you’ve played both video games this is still a damn good read. Paul Dini once again gives us an amazing Batman story!!!!
