Mark of the Phantasm Part 7 of 7 “Exit Plan”

Terry McGinnis has been through a lot lately. Since Kyle Higgins came onto the scene we’ve seen him face the new villain ReWire, Man-Bat, had a universally crossing over adventure with the JLU, and now we get Mark of the Phantasm. Before writing this final review of the MOTP arc… I wanted to get something clear with Kyle. I asked him via twitter that if Bat Beyond 2.0 takes place AFTER Return of the Joker and BEFORE the JLU episode Epilogue. He said that was correct. You can see the exchange here. So Terry has been through a lot in this series. I read in a interview somewhere that Mark of the Phantasm is meant be Kyle’s own version of Return of the Joker. I’m perfectly fine with this, as Kyle has such a great love for the DCAU. However the one thing I come away with after Mark of the Phantasm is that I wanted MORE PHANTASM.

I wanted Terry to have more of a conversation with Jake at the end. It was truly gruesome how Ghoul killed Jake, and I don’t think Terry got the closure he deserved. So now onto my thoughts about the writing.

Writing:

The writing by Higgins and Siegel is great here. It puts a period on the Phantasm story for now, and sets up a returning villain. I have to say while I did very much enjoy the story in this arc…. I’m more interested in what happens next. We do see the rift between Terry and Bruce, but I kinda felt it was anti climactic. Questions I know have aare as follows: #1 Are we gonna see how Terry and Dick started working together? #2 are we gonna see the falling out of Terry and Dana or was this issue it? If this issue was it, I gotta say not much was done with it. I think there was more of an effort to set up the coming events with Rewire and Ghoul, than there was dealing with the falling out of Terry and dana. And what about Max??? I mean she’s supposed to be Terry’s Alfred right? Well she had one scene here… will be seeing more of her in the future? I guess for me this chapter left so many unanswered questions. OH and what about Terry’s mom and brother are we ever gonna see them? It was heart wrenching to see Mary McGinnis in the crossover universe, but we’ve not seen them here yet at all.

Art:

Hester, Gapstur, and the rest of the team on this arc were all brilliant. The emotion that is show in this issue is great. The lines, colors, everything comes together so well. I’ll admit and have admitted that I was kinda skeptical about a new art team coming on the title. But since I knew this was the flashback story I turned out being fine with it. I love the design of the BatCave in the image below…  although the “continuity accurate” person inside of me says he it aint purple! LOL but serious the art was so good in this issue and this arc. Can’t wait to see if this team returns in the future.

Final Thoughts:

So Chapter 31 is here, and I felt like it was more of a setup of future events. Rather than giving us the readers and Terry closure. At least to this part of his life.  But what are ya gonna do right? Bring on Chapter 32 next week.  You should  go get BATMAN BEYOND 2.0 Chapter 31. This is the seventh chapter out of seven that are dedicated to this arc. All within the Batman Beyond Universe, and you won’t wanna miss a second of it! You can find it on the DC Comics App or Comixology or wherever you get your digital comics. Batman Beyond 2.0 continues to go beyond all expectations!
