Review of C.O.W.L. #7 – The Greater Good Chapter 1 – At The Brink

C.O.W.L. #7

COWL #7

Kyle Higgins has brought C.O.W.L. to life! Along with Alec Siegel and Rod Reis! Based on characters from Kyle’s short film The League. Issue #7 kicks off the next story arc for C.O.W.L. It is entitled The Greater Good! This will be a SPOILER FREE  Review of C.O.W.L. #7!

EDITOR’S NOTE: I HAVE GONE BACK TO MY ORIGINAL WRITING STYLE FOR THIS REVIEW. BECAUSE THERE REALLY IS NO DISTINCTION OF WHAT WORKS AND WHAT DOESN’T. EVERYTHING WORKS WITHIN THIS COMIC SERIES.

With the next new storyline starting here. It’s interesting to see where the Writers are taking the series! My hope in the future is that in between arcs we get more origin stories. After going back and rereading this issue, that is exactly what is going to happen according to Kyle Higgins. So happy about that! Also while reading the series be sure you are checking out The C.O.W.L. Sessions by Joe Clark because the comic soundtrack is just so awesome!

Writing:

Higgins and Siegel are off to the races again! After Issue #6, and the Origin of The Grey Raven. We now begin the next arc. This will be giving us all the answers we wanted during the first five issues of the series! In this issue the writing is wonderfully done. Continuing the path that has been set before us, we now have to deal with the fallout and aftermath of John Pierce’s death. After rereading this issue, so I could write this review I have to say the second time around I enjoyed it so much more. I’m not sure what frame of mind I was in, when I first read this, but after rereading it the story is very exciting. Issue #7’s writing almost has a Law & Order feel to it. I have to say the whole arc about Warner turning to Stone to bring back the super villains is going to craft bad vibes later. That is if anyone finds out about it. What I love about Higgins and Siegel’s writing in this issue is that they presented us with a cause and effect storyline. Because of John’s death you have all these other aspects now rearing their heads.

Art:

Rod Reis continues to be amazing on this book. Hopefully he’ll never not be the main artist. I’d assume that he’d never leave the title. The backgrounds, effects, colors…. JUST EVERYTHING is so well done. There were a lot of blues and reds this issue, and sometimes the speechbubbles changed background colors as well. The way Rod draws the characters is amazing. The way his style fits the series, and the setting of the story so well. That is one more reason to get this!!!

Final Thoughts:

Overall C.O.W.L. #7 gives us a new angle to look at, as well as starting the next arc. It also introduces to Detective Evelyn Frost, which adds a whole new layer to this series! Looking forward to issue #7 and seeing where the next story arc takes us! You can get C.O.W.L. #7 from Comixology digitally or any of your local comic shops!
