Batman Beyond 2.0

Continuing the epic animated universe crossover. Bat Beyond 2.0 Chapter 18 continues where JL Beyond 17 left off. This will be a slightly SPOILER FILLED  Review!

Justice Lords Beyond Another World “Two For One” Part 2 of 8

Man this story when it’s all said and done will be an epic read in trade form. Kyle Higgins continues the epic story he and Christos Gage have created. Mateo Gurrero has the art duties in this chapter, and of course Emilio Lopez is on colors. I have to say that in general from reading the JL Beyond Chapter, and then this…. the art flows very well between the two digital first series.

Writing:

So we start this chapter and Terry Bat isn’t in the BatCave. He tries communicating with his universe’s Dick Grayson, but gets no response at all. Then the Justice Lords Task Force finds him, and tells him to unmask. He resists, and notices that a non eye patch wearin’ Dick Grayson is leading the attack. This is exactly why I love multiple universes within the DCAU. We get to see so many different aspects of characters we already know. After the beginning action scene it’s all expositional story. I’M NOT SAYING THAT IS BAD. I love when Kyle Higgins does this kind of storytelling. We have the two Terry’s meet up, and then they go back to JL timeline Terry’s place. I love that Blond Terry isn’t phased at all about our universe’s Terry showing up. It’s also interesting that Blond Terry immediately goes to time travel. So in Chapter 17 of Bat Beyond, at the end our Terry comes running up with his jacket on over the Batsuit. I was worried about this part of the story, because I was unsure if Blond Terry knew about the Bat years. Apparently he knows something……

What I’m most interested in finding out is Blond Terry’s past, and I hope Kyle will delve into that, before this eight part arc is over. The action scene was very well written, as is the dialogue between the two Terrys. Kyle Higgins continues to keep me on th edge of my seat with this new arc. Anyone who loved the Justice Lords episode of the justice league cartoon will love this story as well.

Art:

Mateo Gurrero is the special guest artist this time around, and as I said at the top of this review. I freakin’ love the art continuity between the two ongoing series here. I wa NEW to the jL Beyond book, as I jumped on with this new arc. However Mateo’s style really fits the beyond universe. I will always list Thony Silas as my number one bat beyond guy, but I liked the art here very much. Mateo gets the backgrounds, shading, and adds his own personal touches here and there. There wasn’t anything in his art that I felt wouldn’t have been in the animated series. Dick Grayson looks like a VERY young Ras’ Al Ghul to me in the Justice Lords timeline. It’s just the way his hair is in the back. I could’ve made the obvious Mr. Fantastic reference, but I am more reminded of Ras’ in the Beyond ep Out of the Past. When he is shown in several portraits.
