Review of Galaxy Quest The Journey Continues #1

Galaxy Quest The Journey Continues #1

Galaxy Quest! That 1999 Tim Burton, Alan Rickman, Sigourney Weaver film! The one where they lovingly spoof Star Trek, and set up their own adventures! IDW Publishing brings you an all new comic series based on the film. The comic picks up after te events of the film. Here’s TFG1Mike’s SPOILER FILLED Review of the first issue.

GQ #1

So Galaxy Quest… I hadn’t seen the film in easily 12 years…. Recently with Doug Abel and Nicole Hale I did review it on MWIRE Ep 117… why you might ask? Well it’s all because of IDW Publishing! They have launched a new four issue miniseries for Galaxy Quest! The creative team is as follows… Erik Burnham on writing, Nacho Arranz and Esther Sanz on Art and Colors respectively, with Gilberto Lazcano on letters, and Tom Waltz is the editor!

Writing:

I’ve mainly read Erik Burnham’s TMNT stuff. He is an excellent writer, and he brings the heart into this mini. He takes care of the characters we knew from the film. I love how the continuity is so aligned!!! The story picks up from the final events of the film, and then takes us on a whole new journey! We see that the Omega 13 actually affected other people in the universe. I’m very happy that Burnham did this. Because after watching the film… I knew it wouldn’t just have affected the crew of the NSEA! Erik tells a wonderful story by intermingling the events of the plot. We do see Brandon again, and he has been sucked into the shape shifter’s plotting!!! What I enjoyed the most out of the writing is the attention to the little details. That and the humor. They reference the Christmas release of the film, and a few other things!!! Burnham really brings us into the universe here, and leaves us on quite the cliffhanger.

Art:

Nacho Arranz and Esther Sanz on art and colors. In places I feel the characters don’t look like the actors from the film. I understand maybe they couldn’t get likeness rights. I’m not complaining about this, I’m just pointing it out. I love the way Gwen looks… especially in that panel above!!!! The NSEA looks very film accurate, and then there are the backgrounds… The colors on the backgrounds, and the designs themselves are all very well done. It feels like something we could be watching in a new film… or TV series with this cast of characters! The designs on the aliens are amazing as well. They really pop off the page. Especially in the shots where you have a copycat revealing himself as an alien.

Final Thoughts:

Overall issue #1 of Galaxy Quest is damn good. It’s not earth shattering brilliant, and there is a bit of weirdness for me with some of the character designs. However it sets everything up nicely for the story that is yet to come. Looking forward to issue #2 and seeing where the story goes! You can get Galaxy Quest #1 from Comixology digitally or any of your local comic shops!

Final Score

By Grabthar's hammer, what a comic!

Wonderfully written, the art isn't quite what I'm used to. However I did enjoy most of it. The story is just beginning.... so buckle up because we are in for a ride!!!!
