Justice League Beyond 2.0
The first ever crossover event in Bat Beyond and JL Beyond 2.0 is here! The creative teams of these Digital first comics team up, and wow! Kyle Higgins, Christos N. Gage, Thony Silas, and Dexter Soy bring the DC Animated Universe to an explosive moment in time. This will be a slightly SPOILER FILLED Review!
Justice Lords Beyond The Return of Wonder Woman “Reunion” Part 1 of 8
So as you read above there will be SLIGHT SPOILERS in my reviews for this entire arc. I have read several other things by Christos Gage in the recent past, most notably his Iron Man 3 Prelude #1 & #2 and I’ve seen Dexter Soy’s art in DC Universe Vs Masters of the Universe Crossover event. I even wrote two reviews for that series with Issue #1 and #2. I meant to write the others, but I guess I just forgot. The point in bringing these up is that, I’ve seen these creators’ woks before. So I kinda knew the style I was gonna get outta reading Justice League Beyond 2.0. I will say that I’ve only jumped onto JLB 2.0 for this crossover only. I have not read the previous arc that kicked the 2.0 series off. I also haven’t read the JL Unlimited Series… that happened alongside Bat Beyond Unlimited. It’s not that I didn’t want to read it… I just could never find a decent jumping on point. Plus I’m more involved in the Bat Beyond Story. So I might not continue with JL Beyond after this crossover event.
With all that being said… this first chapter was great. It felt as if I was watching a motionless cartoon episodes! It felt like Justice League the animated series was continuing on past the final episode Destroyer. SURE I’m used to Thony Silas’s art over in the Bat Beyond title, but Dexter Soy brings something interesting for me to the JL Beyond series. Don’t get me wrong I FREAKIN’ LOVE SILAS’s art. But Soy did a game awesome job here.
All right here we go with the writing. I’m not sure how much experience Gage has with the DCAU, but he nailed the Justice Lords storyline down, and then he EXPANDS on it with an epilogue that I thought we’d never get. The fact that Luthor’s ray wore off and the Justice Lords got their powers back… That is a nice way to kick this off… a story of epic porportions. Then Gage tells us about the war that broke out with heroes choosing sides between Lord Superman and Batman.
I guess the one thing that almost, but not really confuses me is that WHEN in our universe is this story happening. Bruce says he’s old, but he doesn’t look as old as he is in Bat Beyond. OH wait I just remembered THIS is our universe, and the story in Bat Beyond 2.0 is the Justice Lords world. So now I get it. Man this is gonna be interesting to keep track of in the writing. Gage does everything right with the DCAU continuity, and the character development we get is great.
Maybe it’s Dexter Soy’s artistic style that is throwwing me off on Bruce’s age. He really doesn’t look as old as he has been portrayed in Bat Beyond. Other than that, I loved the art here. The Batsuits are interesting, and the Super Suit really pops. Even Wonder Woman’s costume while classics DCAU, really shines like a bright star. I also love the backgrounds and settings that they use in this techincally second chapter of the rossover. I will say that the lines on Terry Bat’s batsuit are a little jarring, but I can get used to a new design easily. I think it’s the facial features that throw me off a bit. Other than that absolutely loved the art.
I’m giving this a 4 outta 5 stars. As I stated with part of the art I felt it was a little weird, and I want an answer as to how old Bruce is in this Universe. After reading this first chapter in JLB 2.0, I’m very interested in this side of the story. Gage and Soy do a great job of writing and artistically telling more stories from the DC Animated Universe. You should go get JUSTICE LEAGUE BEYOND 2.0 Chapter 17. It’s the next chapter of the JUSTICE LORDS OF GOTHAM crossover! All within the Batman Beyond Universe, and you won’t wanna miss a second of it! You can find it on the DC Comics App or Comixology or wherever you get your digital comics. Batman Beyond 2.0 continues to go beyond all expectations!
