Transformers Robots in Disguise the new Animated Comic is finally here. Take a look at my Spoiler Free review of issue #1!

TF RID #1 Titles

So Transformers Robots in Disguise 2015 is here! Both in the NEW Animated series, and this NEW ongoing from IDW Publishing. This NEW ONGOING TRANSFORMERS RID comic will run concurrent to the events in the cartoon series. Aimee, Nicole, and I reviewed the Free Comic Book Day 2015 Issue #0, which John Barber wrote. You can listen to that episode of The Pull Bag HERE. I had heard the announcement of the creative team on this series, before the FCBD 2015 issue came out. I was actually expecting to be reading Georgia Ball then. No offense to Mr. Barber, his issue #0 was great. Ms. Ball’s writing style fits in with the cartoon so well. I’ll admit this is my first time reading anything she has written, but you may have read her stuff over on My Little Pony she did the Celestia micro series issue, Littlest Pet Shop, Scooby Doo for DC, and so much more. Priscilla Tramontano does the art and colors. FINALLY!!!!!! So glad she is now on her own book. I usually love a lot of the covers she does for the other Transformers Comics, but glad she gets to shine through here!!!!

Writing:

Ball’s writing style is FUN. That’s really the take away for this series. TO HAVE FUN reading it. I was cracking up and I was only two pages into reading this issue. Ms. Ball incorporates the characters well, she knows the animosity between Sideswipe and Strong Arm. Just everything about the way she writes this is great. The interesting note here is how she will write the villains she introduces. Because let’s face it the core Autobots on Team Bee, well their personalities have been built-in the animated series. Now I’m not saying Georgia can’t add to that, she totally can. However what we have here is a place where she can stretch her creativity, and let loose on certain characters and traits. What I’ve noticed with the writing on the cartoon and now the comic is that while it is all KID FRIENDLY and DIRECTED at kids, it is also FUN for us adults.

So the Decepticon in this issue is called SpinHead. (Where do they come up with these names????) Spinhead’s whole deal is he thinks the Autobots are wanting to mind control him, or steal his thought processes. That’s the general plot. Then Georgia ball writes this whole thing about the team not being a team, and how they need to really be a team. I think what I’m liking with this first issue is that we have a fresh writer to a Transformers book, and she is really shattering all our… well at least my expectations. There are times in this first issue where Bee gets serious, but then there are times when you have the comedy moments like DINPILE!!!! I do have a few questions though about the whole “Team Prime” thing, but I don’t wanna spoil anything that happens here.

Art:

Tramontano’s art is beautiful. Well as beautiful as giant robots can be. It’s like she lifted the designs right out of the cartoon. I honestly think this RID adventure for Hasbro works better in comic form versus cartoon form. The cartoon is 3-D models on 2-D backgrounds, but this is 2-D all the way. Her drawings and colorings of each character are so well done. Where she’ll be able to stretch her artistic style is in character changes. Like that Evil Fixit face at the top of this review. Her background colors and the way she uses shading… just wow!!!! I hope this series goes on forever so I can look at her art all the time!!!! The way Priscilla uses the colors and lines on each character’s facial expressions is both expressive, and reserved all at the same time.

Final Thoughts:

Overall issue #1 of transformers RID Animated was FUN, that’s the entire message I get out of this new series. To sit back read the book and HAVE FUN! Looking forward to issue #2 and seeing where the story goes! You can get Transformers Robots in Disguise #1 from Comixology digitally or any of your local comic shops!
