Kevin’s Lists: Top 10 Worst Movie Sequels of All-Time

Keeping with the tradition of my previous blogs, I decided to once again give you one of my lists and once again to focus on the cinema.

Today I have decided to give you my list of the worst movie sequels of all-time. Next week I will bring you my list of the best movie sequels of all-time so stay tuned for that as well.  I did have a little bit of a problem narrowing my list down to just ten films so I have also included four honorable mentions.

The Honorable Mentions:

And Now for the List…

The Top 10 Worst Sequels of All-Time

——————————————————————————————————–

#10: Star Wars: Phantom Menace

Ok, I know this is technically a ‘prequel’ but it still came out after the original three so just go with me here. I am one of the biggest Star Wars fans in the world and while I do NOT agree with most people that Episode 2 and 3 are bad films, (I LOVE episode 3) I do have to agree with all the critics who panned Episode 1.  This film was just way too kid-friendly and even one of the most kick-ass characters of all-time (Darth Maul) could not erase the presence of Jar Jar Binks from my mind.
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 62%

#9: The Godfather: Part III

It may be just the fact that the first two films in this franchise were two of the most epic films of all-time but Part Three just didn’t live up to expectations.  In the end it almost feels more like a stand-alone film rather than part of the franchise. The plot isn’t as good, the characters are not as well developed, the acting even seems to be a notch below the previous films.  It disappoints me to put this film on the list but I just can’t ignore its flaws.
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 67%

#8: Batman and Robin

Batman and Robin fell prey to one of the most common ‘comic book movie’ traps,  including way too many characters to the point where none of the characters get the amount of development needed to make you feel a connection to them in the least bit. They give you Batman, Robin, Batgirl, Poison Ivy, Mr. Freeze and Bane as well as a plethora of minor characters.  The mere fact that this film received 11 Razzie nominations, has a terrible Rotten Tomatoes score and resulted in Warner Brothers canceling all of their plans to continue the series says it all.
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 13%

#7: Back to the Future: Part III

Out of all of the films on my list I know that this is going to be the one in which people disagree with me the most.  For some reason I have never understood why people actually like this film.  It is even more mind boggling that not only do some people like this movie but some people actually rate it higher than Part II!!  I absolutely hate it when the third movie of a series tries so hard to be different, usually centered around the setting elements that they completely lose the essence of what made the previous films magical.
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 73%

#6: Spider-Man 3

The fact that this film shows up on the list should not be a surprise to anyone I wouldn’t think. Even though I have never been a fan of casting Tobey Maguire for the role of Spider-Man, the first two movies I found rather entertaining.  The third movie may have been one of the worst superhero movies I have ever seen.  I could go on a long rant here but I am pretty confident everyone agrees with me so let’s just leave it as is.
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 63%

#5: Jurassic Park III

I may sound like a broken record here or maybe it’s just a curse that comes with being the third installment in a franchise but I absolutely loved the first Jurassic Park and I actually really liked Lost World as well.  This third movie just did absolutely nothing for me.  The fact that basically only two main characters from the original movie were still around at this point did not help much.
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 50%

#4: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III

The curse of the threes continues! Basically see the post about Back to the Future because this is another one that was ruined before the filming ever even began.  The setting of this movie is so disconnected from the Turtles franchise that it almost wouldn’t matter what the actual plot was.  That and the fact that Splinter was no longer voiced by Kevin Clash land this one near the top of my list!
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 29%

#3: The Matrix Revolutions

Oh my, where do I start with this one, seriously. I honestly don’t hate all movies that are third installments…I promise that four ‘third-parters’ will appear in next weeks ‘Best Sequels List’!  I think the biggest problem here was the fact that the first movie was so revolutionary (pun intended) that there was almost no chance that sequels could live up to that standard.  The second one was a valiant effort but by this third one all of the shock and awe was lost completely. It also didn’t help that they had the ‘genius’ idea to release both the 2nd and 3rd movies in the same year.
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 36%

#2: Dumb and Dumberer

The name alone was enough for everyone to know this movie was going to be terrible.  In all honesty not very many comedies have ever been able to capture the essence of the original.  The second Caddyshack could have easily made it onto this list as well as many others I won’t mention.  Not only was the title terrible in this one but so were the previews.  Not one trailer for this film even suggested that it would be reach the bar set by the first one.  The final nail in the coffin here was the casting for the main two roles.  Are you kidding me, seriously!
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 10%

And the Worst Sequel of All-Time goes to…

#1: Every Disney Sequel

That’s right folks, EVERY Disney Sequel ever made comes in as the Worst Movie Sequel of All-Time. Disney has made some of the best animated films or all-time.  There constant desire to milk every penny out of those titles has resulted in some of the worst animated films in history.  The plot is almost always recycled from either the original film or from other Disney properties. That or they go with the constant idea of telling what happened before or after, which is not always a bad thing but their lack of character development makes it seem like every sequel was written during a writers’ strike.
Some people may argue that one or two of the sequels are decent so that not EVERY single sequel deserves to be included in this post.  However, I would argue that maybe not every sequel is horrible but NONE of them are actually good.  I mean seriously name me one sequel that has surpassed the original!  Disney does a lot of stuff well, sequels are not one of them.
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: I am sure if I added the scores for every single Disney Sequel it STILL wouldn’t break the 50% mark!

  1. Dude, have to disagree with your placement on #’s 2 and 8. LoL, I am not defending “Batman & Robin”, but it was so much worse than “Dumb and Dumberer”. Totally should have been #2!

  2. Batman and Robin should have been the worst movie sequel of all time! Bat Credit Card. That statement itself should warrant it’s placement at the top of the worst heap. Although I do happen to agree with the placement for Back To The Future 3. If it were any closer to the top I would have to disagree heavily because it wasn’t that horrible of a film.

  3. To be fair here I think kevin is just meaning the disney animated sequels not pixar. BTTF III should not be on the list it told the story of marty and doc and explored their friendship more.

  4. Pixar movies are not disney sequels so yeah toy story and tron are not included. I still will never understand how anyone can like BTTF 3 it was SOOOO terrible!

  5. Back To The Future 3 gets a lot of flack because it was a sequel but it in one sense stood alone. It was a sequel that took a completely different route in developing characters. It did succeed in furthering the relationship between Marty and Doc Brown. It just appears way far fetch that it goes from suburban and futuristic scenery and storylines, to the wild west. To be honest, it wasn’t one of the worst sequels ever. But it did have it’s fair share of nitpick ammunition.

  6. Yea, the biggest problem with BTTF III was that it was set in the wild west which completely eliminated what I liked best about the franchise in the first place, the futuristic look at society and technology.

  7. “I would argue that maybe not every sequel is horrible but NONE of them are actually good”

Cinderella III A Twist in Time was Damn good… it told a unique story to the franchise beyond what the original was. Does it surpass the original no, but I freakin’ loved it. It was one of the rare good disney sequels.

Aladdin and the King of Thieves is another damn good sequel…. granted these two out of x number of sequels don’t really add up to them all being good, because I know they aren’t. But there are a few RARE diamonds in the disney sequel rough. HA! See what I did there!
