Last year I had decided to expand our previous blogs based on ‘best movie scenes’ to encompass instead a variety of ‘Movie Moments’. Carrying on in that tradition, I give you some of my favorite movie moments of 2016!
Best Fight:
Nominees:
Change in Perception
[Doctor Strange]
Chirrut Imwe vs The Empire
[Rogue One: A Star Wars Story]
Iron Man vs Captain America & Winter Soldier
[Captain America: Civil War]
Winner:
Team Iron Man vs Team Captain America
[Captain America: Civil War]
What made Captain America: Civil War so captivating overall was the fact that for once we were seeing heroes fighting heroes which allowed us to see certain members face off in ways that we before could only imagine. This was never more evident than in the airport hanger fight scene, a fight scene that will not soon be forgotten by comic book fans.
Best Moment of Bad-Assery:
Nominees:
Magneto Loses Control
[X-Men: Apocalypse]
The Civil War Bike Grab
[Captain America: Civil War]
Window Punch
[Jack Reacher: Never Go Back]
Grenade Defense
[The Accountant]
Winner:
Return of Vader
[Rogue One: A Star Wars Story]
Although this category may be the hardest to illustrate through still images, there were still plenty of bad-ass movie moments in 2016. Seeing Jack Reacher punch through a window with his bare hand and hit another individual in the face, the bike stunt that was pulled off in Civil War, The Accountant being able to avoid the damage a grenade would do by smashing into another human being with his own body and seeing Magneto lose his every loving mind after his family is attacked were all battling for the prize for most of the year. Then, we saw the return of Darth Vader in the moments leading up to A New Hope and the conversation was over.
Best Musical Moment:
Nominees:
Jungle Book
[The Bear Necessities]
Sing Street
[Drive it Like You Stole It]
Star Trek: Beyond
[Sabotage]
Winner:
La La Land
[Lovely Night]
Music continues to play more and more of a role in trailers and the marketing of movies as the years go by and this was once again evident in 2016. Another trend that is developing is studios who are becoming more willing to bring an entire movie based around music to the big stage. One could pick a number of moments from La La Land to represent this category but needless to say the film overall represents a big step in the mindset of the powers that be when it comes to Modern Musicals.
Most Emotional Moment:
Nominees:
Light Between Oceans
[Removing a Tombstone]
Manchester by the Sea
[I Can’t Beat It]
Winner:
A Monster Calls
[You Break Things]
I could have included even more moments in this category but do not want to overwhelm anyone with grief. I also don’t want to give to much detail in case someone hasn’t seen these movies. If you’ve seen the films in question though I have full faith that you will agree with their placement within this section.
Best Twist Moment:
Nominees:
Time Travel
[Arrival]
Climax
[Remember]
Mom
[Hunt for the Wilderpeople]
Winner:
Tragedy upon Tragedy
[Manchester by the Sea]
The twist in Manchester by the Sea is not perhaps your traditional movie twist. It doesn’t take a movie and swing it in a completely different direction. Instead it takes things that are already happening and emotions that you are already feeling and then simply multiplies that affect in ways you could not possibly be prepared for.
Most Ridiculous Movie Moment:
Nominees:
A CGI Climax
[Suicide Squad]
Molotov Cocktail
[10 Cloverfield Lane]
D’Onofrio’s Entrance
[Magnificent Seven]
Human Shield, Round house kick, Grenade Punch
[Hacksaw Ridge]
Human Compass
[Swiss Army Man]
Turkey Baster
[Don’t Breath]
Food Orgy
[Sausage Party]
Elephant Vagina
[Brothers Grimsby]
Winner:
Martha
[Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice]
In a year littered with ridiculous movies, let alone ridiculous movie moments, this category could almost become a blog all to itself. I tired to cover a good cross section of those moments this year that made you say WTF as you sat with your popcorn and soda and NO moment made more people do that, then the Martha scene in Batman v Superman. The most ridiculous thing about this moment is that there were actual writers/directors etc that thought this was clever and logical…ugh
Best Overall Movie Moment:
Nominees:
What Don’t You Want
[Hell or High Water]
Gravity Change
[Arrival]
Those Aren’t Your Lyrics
[Morris from America]
Would that it were so Simple
[Hail Caesar]
Bus Song
[Captain Fantastic]
Clean Shaven
[10 Cloverfield Lane]
Lost Dog
[Green Room]
The DMV
[Zootopia]
The Couch Scene
[Loving]
Winner:
Opening Credits
[Deadpool]
For every ridiculous moment this past year there was a great moment that accompanied it. These moments ranged from dramatic to comedic to simply unique. The opening credits sequence in Deadpool however very early in the year perfectly represented what 2016 would be as a film year overall. A year full of big bangs and special effects, a year where blockbusters were not what they have been in the past, a year where films were not afraid to buck the trend and dare to be different. Is it the best scene of the year overall, I don’t think so, but I can’t think of one that better represents the year overall to me than this one.
MARTHA is the “safe word” !! LOL that would win best ridiculous moment! That whole movie was ridiculous !!! Great list.
