TFG1MIKE 365 – 2019 Day 20

RESPECT THE BACK!

Hello all and welcome to a NEW Daily Blog series from me… TFG1Mike! The idea here is for me to write something, anything, once a day for 365 days. From January 1, 2019 to December 31, 2019. In my 20th entry, I’ll be talking about the 11th BEST SELLING musical act of ALL TIME NICKELBACK!!!

“I’VE HAD IT WITH ALL THIS NICKELBACK HATING!” – Deadpool

DEADPOOL IS RIGHT! Nickelback is awesome! I’ve loved the band since their release of The State” album in 2000. I found them just after I started listening to Creed back then. Throughout The GCRN’s 10 year history, JT and I have been talking about Nickelback off and on. We started in 2012 with the ARTIST SPOTLIGHT on them. After that we reviewed the No Fixed Address and Feed the Machine albums on the flagship podcast of the Network!

This band has been around for 20+ years, and I still don’t understand the hate for them. I knew someone years ago, that had a personal experience with the  band that was negative. Honestly other than that, I just don’t get the outright hatred. As Fred Savage says in the video above, “Formulaic ear garbage.” Really? What’s wrong with a catchy rock song! “Breathe”, “Old Enough”, “Worthy To Say”, and more from “The State” album are catchy tunes. I guess I can understand being over played on the radio, but come on… that success is what makes bands keep on going, besides their own need to be driven to continue their art form. People will read this, and say, but they only use three chords… Well sometimes that’s all you need. “How You Remind Me” from 2001’s “Silver Side Up” is easily their most popular, and most played song. So much so, that everyone looks at that one song to define their entire career. I look beyond that, because I’m a fan of the music they make. I do not like all of the songs, on every album, but I like more than maybe 60% of the stuff they produce.

Each album they release is a snapshot of what’s going on in the band member’s lives at that moment. I heard Chris Robertson from Black Stone Cherry say that recently in an interview. He’s right, not just for BSC, but for all bands and musicians. Each album since “The State”, there have been at least 4 to 5 of the 11 tracks that I really enjoy. I’m not here to re review my previous thoughts on Nickelback, the purpose of this post is to ask WHY all the HATE? Just because they have been successful, or because they play to the lowest common denominator, or just because you need to hate something? There are plenty of thing that I hate out there in the world, but at this point most of the time I’m more indifferent than anything else. Between Scrappy Doo, Nickelback, and The New England Patriots, I can’t decide which level hate is more than the other.

What are your opinions of Nickelback? Love em, or hate em, I wanna hear from you. Please give actual examples of why you like or dislike the band. Don’t just say “they suck!”  As always let me know in the comments below!

Join me tomorrow morning January 21, 2019 as I’ll be writing about my favorite football team THE NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS!

  1. I will begin with saying, I USED to really like Nickelback… during their first two albums. Same with Lincoln Park. The thing that killed both of these bands for me is the lead singers in concert. While I understand they cannot sound exactly like their CD’s, the amount of processing on their vocals ruined the concerts for me and my thoughts about them.

I saw a concert @ DTE Pine Knob in Auburn Hills, MI with KORN, and Lincoln Park one year and another with 3 Doors Down and Nickelback. Sad thing was that 3 Doors Down and Korn sounded basically like listening to their CD whereas the other two lost their luster for me and I no longer cared for the band. Plus the drunken escapade of the Chad Kroger that night whipping bear bottles into the crowd, wasting time on the concert while he attempted to get his vocoder microphone. It just left a sour taste.

Have I enjoyed their music in the past? Yes. Would I care for their new stuff? Nope. Haven’t listened to their new stuff or them in general in years. Last time I heard Lincoln Park was in the first 3 Transformers films and Nickelback in parodies of their Photograph song.

I respect them as artists but that’s where my thoughts of them lie at this point.

    1. I meant to say in the post, that I finally saw NB in 2006…. during the All The Right Reasons tour… they were awesome live. I know you have zero desire to listen anything they’ve done lately, but try the 2 videos I embedded. Edge of a Revolution is from 2014’s No Fixed Address album, and Feed the Machine is from the album of the same name released in 2017.

3DD I have all together stopped paying attention to, Brad the lead singer is a dick, and he pulls dick moves all the time. I was at a show with them, 12 Stones, and Theory of a Deadman in 2003, and 3DD wouldn’t do an encore, and it was a benefit show!
