Music from The DC Universe Animated Original Movie

Frederik Wiedmann is becoming the premiere composer of DC Animated properties! Here he crafts a masterfully emotional score to the most recently released DC Animated Original Movie Son of Batman.

Son of Batman is a single disc 27 track release from La La Land Records. It’s 65:52 in length, and sounds so Battastic! It includes two album exclusive tracks in Track 12 Ambused and Track 16 The Spoiled Son. After listening to this disc several times, I can’t help but wonder why the album exclusive tracks weren’t pyt as additional themes at the end after the end credits track. I mean they sound great in the order they are in, but these tracks apparently are not a part of the film itself. I guess that would be my nitpick for this release. As most of the people that read my reviews know I’m all about stuff being in context and or continuity. So as I stated in my review of the film itself. Frederik Wiedmann’s score might be the best thing I like about Son of Batman. The opening theme amps you up and gets you into the film, then we have track 2 Peace and War where Slade attacks Ras’s stronghold. A Very intense battle scene! Track 2 fades into Track 3 as we face off with Deathstroke’s Army. then we have Track 4 Ashes to Ashes where Ras is trying to get to the lazarus pit. Track 4 is very emotionally charged for us as the listener or as you the viewer watching the film. Because in this scene we see that Ras isn’t as all powerful as he used to be. I’ll say this for Son of Batman… they really went out of their way to make Ras look grandfatherly.

Track 5 Gotham Crimes is an intense sound into what crime in Gotham City sounds like, and how Batman fights it. The bottom line with this score is that Wiedmann knows HOW and when to use action music, and when to use fun upbeat time of music, that isn’t so serious as to the rest of the album. Take Track 6 for example this is when Batman and Talia meet up…. she’s trying to seduce Bruce, and the music reflects that. Even though the album exclusive tracks weren’t in the film. They fit very well within the context of this release, and I really like The Spoiled Son track. It has a mischievous kinda feeling to it. Plus Damian is always being a mischievous kinda kid. Tracks 25 and 26 Damian’s Blade and Farewells might be the best songs on the release. They show two things. How far Damian wants to go, and then his willingness to become more like his father, rather than his grandfather. Overall Wiedmann has done an amazing job crafting a score to go along with Son of Batman.

What I love about these La La Land Records releases is the liner notes that come with the albums. Not only do you get cool images from the project, but you also get insights from the people crafting the music. That is just a nice little addition that this soundtrack company does!! I can’t not give this music a perfect, because while my opinions of Damian as a character are negative. Frederik Wiedmann put together a incredibly emotional score for Son of Batman!

You can get this awesome score from LA LA Land Records directly! You can also find the track listing there!
