Blu-Ray Review – Young Justice

wb-archive

First off I’d like to thank Gary Miereanu of the WB Archive Collection, who has presented me so graciously with the Blu-Ray collection of Young Justice Season 1.

I’d also like to state I had not really caught this on TV at the time it aired. So for me this was a new introduction to the DC Animated Universe coming from the days of the Bruce Timm fronted DCAU. Young Justice takes a different stance this time pushing focus to the younger wards or ‘sidekicks’ of the primary heroes. In their journey’s they learn to work as a team and to become as great as their heroic mentors.

As for the cover art, what isn’t there to love about it. The Young Justice League jumping into battle. Albeit missing a few of the characters I think this would make a great poster. I love every aspect of this Blu-Ray disc other than the ‘features’. However that all being said, I think I’ll continue after the jump.

REVIEW:

THE MENU:

The Menu system here is quick and to the point which is again something I love about DC and WB when they release their sets. It has the heroes and the bar at the bottom with the four key areas to go. The text is neat, and clearly placed instead of hidden among background objects.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

Again like most of the WB Collection there is a lack of Special Features. Granted in the Grand Scheme of things it isn’t honestly missed all that much. Although it would have been nice to have maybe included profiles or some more background to this universe as features, or included some sort of behind the scenes look.

AUDIO:

I enjoyed the tones, sound effects and music in this series. Very fitting no matter whether you’re watching the League fighting or talking, everything fits. The vocal performances in this series were exceptional. I felt as if the portrayals here were enough to make me gravitate and get a sense of feeling for who these people are. Between the crisp sounds of vocals, gun fire, explosions or music this shines.

VISUALS:

Reaching this area you always have people who may or may not like the artistic designs. The designs here were very modern however very functional with call backs to the original characters. I enjoyed the almost anime takes to some of the monsters and aliens that appeared here. It added that element of darkness to the creatures that contrasts the heroes perfectly.

OVERVIEW:

Overall I think this disc, the story, the visuals and all the content of this Blu-Ray gave me the best despite the lack of special features it is a must own. DC has this unique ability to grasp my attention in the animated realm and this series is no different. The show tells us a new story that still touches on the main Justice League but gives a lot of the story and growth to their 2nd tier sidekicks. I believe it deserves a place on your Disc shelf.

YOUNG JUSTICE, SEASON ONE (Blu-ray)

The two-disc, 26-episode “Young Justice: Season One” features Greg Weisman (Gargoyles) and Brandon Vietti’s (Batman: The Brave and The Bold) critically acclaimed and fan-approved tale of titanic teen heroes. Strap in and get ready for this dashing and daring new take on

Robin, Aqualad, Kid Flash, Superboy, Miss Martian and Artemis as they

splash across the 16×9 widescreen. In this first season, a “junior” Justice League bands together for purposes both light and dark – to honor the legacies they will one day inherit, and to be the Justice League’s secret weapon. From within their HQ The Cave, they embark on covert missions that would be impossible for the high profile Justice League. Batman (naturally) is their mission handler, Red Tornado supervises and Black Canary trains them. But the lads and ladies of Young Justice push their mission envelope and discover the dark secrets hidden behind the scenes of this alternate DC universe.

Almost Perfect

The show tells us a new story that still touches on the main Justice League but gives a lot of the story and growth to their 2nd tier sidekicks. With clean visuals, audio and a great story, I believe it deserves a place on your Disc shelf.
