NEW Album “SCREAMIN’ AT THE SKY” releases 9-29-23!
Hello all and welcome to a NEW Daily Blog series from me… TFG1Mike! The idea here is for me to write something, anything, once a day for 365 days. From January 1, 2023 to December 31, 2023. In my 193rd entry, I’ll be talking about Black Stone Cherry’s non album single. This is their cover of Tina Turner’s WHAT’S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT!!!! You can watch the band talk about the process of doing this cover HERE! I love these guys for what they do! Giving all of their portion of the proceeds to Domestic Violence Awareness is amazing!
Black Stone Cherry are the KINGS of COVERS!!! At least they have been for me! I didn’t even know this one was comin’, and when it hit… I was like WAIT WHAT?!!!!! And then I promptly put it on repeat as loud as I could in my headphones!
OK Before I get too far into this, here’s the original Tina Turner song:
And I remember listening to that as a kid and loving the song. Of course as a kid I didn’t know the true meaning at the time. The instrumentals in the original are there, and you can feel the beat, but I think the focus is on Tina’s voice, and what she is saying with the lyrics. YES the music and melodies matter, but the words are the most important. With the Black Stone Cherry version they bring the emotion that Tina did, but they kick it up a notch BSC Style with heavy EVERYTHING! Seriously Marty McFly would even say that’s HEAVY! The drums that John Fred Young brings the song in with are attention grabbers, the bass and guitar chords are there, and you recognize the tune of the song. However between the drums and Chris Robertson’s voice, those are the loudest here!! From 1:15 or so when Chris ends this stanza:
“Oh-oh, what’s love got to do, got to do with it?What’s love but a second-hand emotion? What’s love got to do, got to do with it? Who needs a heart when a heart can be broken?”
There’s this amazing instrumental solo in the song. This lasts up until around the 1:25 mark or so. I love that, because not only do these guys focus on the vocals, they also let the music breathe and bleed into our souls. That’s the way Black Stone Cherry do anything in their musical career, there’s no ceiling for them, and this cover is just one more piece of evidence to prove that these rock stars are amazing!!! Musically, and amazing human beings as well!
Even though this is a non album single, I still wish it was on the album. This September I’m not gonna be NERVOUS to listen to #BSC8 Screamin’ At The Sky!!!
Join me July 14, 2023 as I’ll be writing about Black Stone Cherry’s third single from the new album! It’s the album title track Screamin’ At The Sky!
