Talking in Circles – 94 – Whoboner

TinC-ipod

This week’s theme: Preview and Review. On this week’s show we look back on the year that was and look forward to what 2016 has is store in the world of comics, TV, and movies. Before we get that that we debate the quality of Jessica Jones and ask if the show went to far, or possibly not far enough.

  1. I would be interested in hearing where Chuck felt Jessica Jones went too far. I had some issues myself to start because I felt some of the sex scenes came off as overly gratuitous at times. I was glad it got away from that as the series went on though. I still have like four more episodes to go so I am curious to hear if that is where it goes off the rails.

    1. Yeah the sex scenes were just too much I thought. They really didn’t contribute anything to the story, for me anyway. But once that was out of the way the show got good in the middle. I think honestly it was also in the last 3 or 4 episodes that kind of disturbed me. I’ve watched gory fight scenes and stuff before no problem but this was like deep psychological stuff. Obviously that’s the character study of kilgrave but it felt overly extreme for some reason. The hand in the blender, the 1000 cuts thing, people stabbing themselves. There are elements like these that we see in other shows but the characters generally react appropriately. I think what bothered me also about this show is that most of the time it didn’t seem like Jessica was all that effected emotionally by these horrible acts. Maybe only to those close to her. So maybe my problem is with her character and that she is so cold I couldn’t connect with her. So it just compounded the horrific things kilgrave was doing. That’s my best guess lol

  2. While I am kind of disappointed that Kilgrave got offed, character-wise it made probably the most sense out of any Marvel villain yet. He was obsessed with Jessica. He could never not be directly threatening to everyone around him. Sidelining him for a potential future storyline just wouldn’t work – he’s too powerful to be kept down for any reason for that long. He needed to die.

But damn if I don’t want more David Tennant in the MCU. My Whoboner was popping as well.

  3. Chuck should have complained more to Amazon. Anytime I got something from them damaged they gave me a discount and one time when they had to send it twice they gave me $50 of credit on Amazon. If you have Amazon Prime also check out Mad Dogs. Fantastic Series!

    2. See I do think the sex scenes did tell you a lot about the character of Jones. Being a victim herself you see how sex is nothing more than an action of physical pleasure and nothing else. There’s no emotion just action even when she is with Luke who she has shown she does care for. It represents how distant she is, how broken she has become, and that is why she doesn’t display her emotion like others. It is more out of fear than anything. That’s why it is important for us to see how Killgrave can psychologically damage others. His twisted mind is after more material gains or sex. If he just want to plainly kill someone it would elicit emotions that deep. I do feel we see Jones effected by the way Killgrave treats his victims. She could easily physically harm many of them to stop them but refuses unless there are no other options.

  5. I agree Daredevil was better than Jessica Jones but I really enjoyed it. The shows has a bigger focus on rape than the comic despite less such victims present and Jessica’s related backstory was changed a bit too. The show runner’s decision to never actually show sexual violence is further a good call (you see some in the comic) due to the the over reliance of such nonsense on current US TV. My biggest problem is how aggressively non-superhero the shows is despite strong tie-ins to the Netflix Marvel universe as the comic lived of it’s contrast of Marvel glamor and noir grit. More Luke Cage would have been better too and i assume that his and Jessica’s show will be merged after their introductory season.

    1. I loved the way the series explored the different types of control. Kilgrave’s control over his victims. The control of grief over Cage. Manipulative control over Trish by her awful mother. Chemical control over Simpson. I particularly loved the strong female characters some of whom I loved to loathe in particular Carrie-Anne Moss as Jeri Hogarth. She makes Glenn Close’s character ‘Patty Hewes’ from Damages look positively angelic. Can’t wait for the next season of JJ.

    1. Dang I let em off too easy! I’ll remember that cuz honestly I’m not impressed with their 2 day shipping at all. Just ordered something again on a Saturday and didn’t get it until Wednesday. So I think I might complain. I’m certainly not going to pay 100 bucks a year for standard shipping speed

  9. Do you guys have any thoughts on the upcoming DC shakeup that is happening? I know you all are more on the Marvel side but do you have any interest in picking up more DC if they do another relaunch? I know DC fans are flipping for what I can see and I can’t blame them. I am holding out hope it might work out cause DC needs a kick in the but right now anyways.

    1. Funny you say that because I just started reading more DC this year and then I just heard this. I guess I am still unsure if it is really a relaunch or soft reboot or what. Mostly it will depend on the creative teams they have attached.

      1. Well I know I am super sad Scott Snyder is leaving Batman. At least he’ll be on Detective Comics but part of me thinks its the beginning of him moving away from writing all together and becoming more of an editor.

      1. It’s supposedly a full on relaunch as far as what I’ve heard. so maybe it’ll be called the new 75 or whatever. Outside of the current batman beyond by jurgens the he-man title which ended…. and that’s about it… the rest I just don’t care. Rather read IDW or Zenescope

        1. Well no one knows exactly yet. It is all speculation. I am leaning towards the side that it is not a full relaunch. I see it more of a shuffling of creative teams and maybe some new number one issue. If anything it will just be a return to the Multiverse. Titans Hunt right now is already bringing back some of the continuity from Pre New 52. I don’t see them undoing everything New 52 just picking their spots and making the books more aligned with the look and tone of the movie universe.
