  1. Great episode Steve. Regarding your conversation on movie criticism for me the quality of someone’s critique of a film shouldn’t be based on how much you agree with it. I read Roger Ebert every chance I could, not because I always agreed with him but because he was a great writer who was able to deeply examine a film in a way that would inform the novice and entertain the cineaphile. A good reviewer is able to make claims and back up those claims.

I’m not sure if its simply the reaction to Batman v Superman but the idea that movie critics don’t like geek movies isn’t really true. I mean Marvel movies have all been reviewed well, Star Wars last year had great reviews, Mad Max was fantastically reviewed and won 6 Oscars, The X-Men movies have been reviewed well, I could go on.

The only time we see critics review a movie poorly is when fans also tend not to like the movie with like Spider-Man 3 or Fantastic Four. Personally I really wanted to like Batman v Superman but I couldn’t give it a positive review myself. I could see why fans might like it but there are objective issues that can’t be ignored.

    1. Thanks Dan. Yeah I agree with your statement on the critics being a great writer and not agreeing with their POV. I plan to talk about it this week and write a review of it.

    2. My issue though is you never see great genre movies get the same respect as Oscar bait dramas. They’ll throw them some tech awards but nothing ever serious like acting, directing, or best picture.
