  1. I’m actually looking forward to the new Transformers. The trailer looks good and the story seems interesting enough and there’s no Shia so that’s a plus.

The one thing that bugs me about the Oscars is how they don’t recognize comedy as much. Comedies are very rarely nominated for anything.

  2. I understand the Oscars aren’t for everyone. Not many people would get fired up as me when 20 Feet From Stardom steels the Best Documentary Oscar from Act of Killing, but I don’t think the Oscars are as subjugated as people say they are.
What I find interesting is that cinemaphiles claim the Oscars are too broad and don’t recognize the smaller films enough. They are screaming about Inside Llewyn Davis, Short Term 12, Frutivale Station, and All is Lost not getting nominations while general movie fans like yourself scream the choices are too Indie. But I think if you look at the films this year you’ll see there is quite a mixture of both. This is why I love that it went to above 5 nominations because it allows for that mixture.
For me the qualifying factor if a movie is Oscar worthy is its quality. I’m not against genre movies getting nominations if they deserve them, nor do I want genre films to get nominations just to appeal to a wider audience. Movies like Iron Man 3, Thor, Hunger Games, Fast and Furious, ect… are fine for what they are but in no way would I consider them best of the year. They do not do anything that has not been done before or offer anything new.
If a genre film is transcendent and more than fluffy entertainment than it should be recognized and that tends to be the case. I could see the argument for The Dark Knight getting a Best Picture nomination as it tries to be something more than just a comic book movie. Movies like Avatar, District 9, Gravity, Inception, and others recently did get Best Picture nominations. In the past it was even more common place. Jaws, Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Close Encounters are got nominated for Best Picture.
I look at movies the same way a mechanic looks at a car. The exterior or the entertainment factor is a big component of what I like but it’s the engine or what’s underneath that separates the good from the great. I clamor for movies that make me think, question, reexamine, or have me transfixed long after it’s over–Movies that I can appreciate on a technical level because of the direction ,cinematography, use of score, or acting. It’s a gigantic puzzle piece that I pick a part and put back together. If a movie has only a few pieces or has nothing of importance underneath it is not Oscar worthy.
Do I think the Oscars are the be all end all? No, but they do play an important role. What I love most about the Oscars is their ability to lift of smaller films to the masses. Movies like Winter’s Bone, Nebraska, Tree of Life, Beasts of the Southern Wild, etc… Movies that show what the capabilities of film really are.
Also very much disagree with the idea of adding more categories specify for genre films or action movies. Unless the quality of genre movies increases greatly. If anything we should be demanding we get more movies like Raiders of the Lost Ark and less movies like The Transformers so we don’t need a seperate a category.

I guess I would ask what genre films do you think are actually deserving of a Best Picture nomination that didn’t get one?

    1. My issue isn’t with the films themselves or the fact ones I enjoy didn’t get nominated or win. The issue is that genre films in general get the shaft most the time. I’d like to see an even balance between them all. Do I think Iron Man 3 should get one, no, nor do I believe all should get the nomination.

I think the balance of the Indie, and Mainstream is fine. My issue like I said before is the lack of diversity. Yes you can argue all the films were different but on the emotional and level they were all the same. I tried watching most of those films. I made it through them but I didn’t see the acclaim. I more so get irritated watching ONE film carrying the 90% of the awards.

I watched Gravity and didn’t enjoy it. The cinematography was done well, the special effects were good but it’s nothing I haven’t seen before this past year. The camera angles at points made me ill and were jarring. The story albeit was moving emotionally but it was slow to me.

Again it’s not that I had a specific film just that it was all the same to me. It’s also not that it should get picture I am saying any of the categories.

I’d argue some are better than Gravity with Special Effects or Score. But again it’s nothing I haven’t seen before.

      1. My argument isn’t that genre films get the shaft but that the genre films we have today for the most part don’t deserve nominations. That’s why I was asking what genre film deserved a nomination that didn’t get one. I understand the desire for diversity, but in order to have that we need better genre movies. Films like Gravity, Captain Phillips, District 9, Inception, and many other genre films have gotten nominations. That’s why I was curious to hear what films didn’t get nominations that deserved them.

You claim that Gravity ‘was nothing I haven’t seen before this past year’, could you not say that for pretty much every genre movie in the last decade with few exceptions. Not to mention to say ‘its nothing I haven’t seen before’ is a statement I question. Considering the technology that made the movie didn’t exist until a few weeks before the film was made.

You can say you can argue some are better with Gravity and Score. I’d honestly really like to see that argument. It has me curious. Also what films you think deserved a nomination that didn’t get one. I’m sure there’s a bunch which would be fun to hear. That way I have a better idea where you are coming at this for.

Plus Why not use the Oscars to grow your movie pallet so its more than just mediocre genre movies. Isn’t the fact the Oscars nominate movies you haven’t heard of a good thing? Allows for discovering. No one’s going to discover a movie like Hunger Games or Star Trek because of the Oscars.

        1. I just find the Oscars uninteresting and the films they cover are much like that to me. The style of the film and yeah maybe some tech wasn’t there before it but again I wasn’t impressed. Also I hate 3D so despite the fact the film did it great the overall film is bad, to me.

          1. I get that. Certain movies aren’t for everyone, which is what I love about movies that there is something for every pallet. If you aren’t a fan of Gravity that’s perfectly okay if it’s not your cup of tea. However, if you are going to say it’s a bad movie I’m going to need more of a reason why to legitimize that statement. Your issues so far are rather general and could be thrown at any movie, or if I want to be snide about it could say those issues could be based in viewer ignorance or lack of artistic appreciation. (Which is obviously not true) Again, don’t have an issue if you don’t like it but if you are going to claim it’s a bad movie I’m going to question that statement and ask you for reasoning behind it.

    1. I don’t think actors or actresses should. I think I kind of agree with the guys on MWIRE Weekly this past week that it should be a Jimmy Kimmel or Jimmy Fallon or a late night talk host / comedian. It seems to get overrun with people not classed enough to run it.

    1. Actually I don’t see either as him. Buscemi is too old and Crispin has the same facial features but lacks the gravitas. I was recently watching Hunger Games: Catching Fire and saw this guy who played Finnick, named Sam Claflin. He I think has the emotion and looks to play a good Joker.

  4. Do you think the ship in the transformers 4 trailer could be Unicron because I’m sorry there is no way he can be a big ass planet in a live action move

  5. I am feeling agents of SHIELD is getting better every week also my favorite character in that show is a tie between agent may , Phill Coluson and Skye

  6. I seem the first two matrix films I hope to god they don’t go all Lucas on us also I don’t trust people who piss on speed racer

    1. Not trying to be rude here but do you think you could compose all of your thoughts before posting, that way all of your comments can be encapsulated in one post. Makes it much easier to interact with you that way.

  7. I’d like to see Michael C. Hall from Dexter play the Joker. He has the face and look for it. And his Joker could even be darker than Ledgers Joker.

  8. I’d like to see the guy from the Hannibal TV series play the Joker. The guy that plays Hannibal I mean. He has a creepy look to him that could work.

I don’t know what makes a movie Oscar worthy. I would say if a movie is going to be nominated for something its got to stand out for some reason or another. I do agree I’d like to see movies like Dark Knight get some more nominations. Having a category just for comic book movies or action movies I do not know about. The Golden Globes have one for Comedy and Musical and that tends to have a lot of bad movies get nominated. The Tourist anyone?

  9. To answer your Joker question: Please god don’t have another Joker for at least another 10 or 15 years. I get it. He’s Batman’s arch foe, but Batman has so many other villains that you can choose from. It was 19 years from Jack to Heath. Lets wait another 19 years again until we see someone else play the Joker.

    1. Or at the very least the FINAL film in this run of Affleck. Not until then, so say 10 years from now. He has a large rogues gallery with villains begging for a correct run.

  10. I think Rain Wilson could actually make an interesting Joker. I don’t know what makes a movie Oscar worthy. I guess if its good or not. I am interested in some of the movies that get nominated. Not all. I did find Captain Phillips was really good and very thrilling. I tend to not agree with the Oscars at times. I did love it when they awarded Lord of the Rings Return of the King with tons of awards as that trilogy was deserving.
