  1. I too listen to a lot of podcasts.Think my favorite, depending on the day, is Nerdist.

Man, I miss Saturday morning cartoons. Its a wasteland nowadays. I think the issue isn’t the cartoons but the networks. They would give them time to breath or gain an audience. RIght when a lot of them are getting good they get cancelled.

    1. I liked Nerdist when I first found him, back when he had Rob Paulsen and Maurice LaMarche on…. More recently I find myself being bored with it, or not caring about the more recent guests.

      1. That’s interesting because I could not disagree more. I think the guests recently have been some of the best, Metallica, The Ramones, Tom Hanks, Doug Benson, Adam Scott, Stan Lee and Tenacious D have been some of the greatest episodes.

        1. OK I’ll rephrase …. some of the more recent guests as in people I’ve NEVER heard of. Like NIKKI GLASER AND SARA
          SCHAEFER…..

Yes I agree the Metallica and Stan Lee eps were awesome, but it’s the random obscure guests that I don’t care for. Also I’ve listened to so much Nerdist, that I’m sick of Chris saying the same old things sometimes.

          1. Nikki Glaser and Sara Schaffer are awesome comics. I guess I like listening to episodes of people I don’t know. Why listen to the same people over and over. Podcast allow you to discover new things for free. Why not take advantage of that.

The complaint about someone saying the same things all the time can be made by any podcast or TV show, including your podcasts. I don’t mind it at all, its part of life really. We all tend to go back to common sayings and stories.

          2. YES podcasts are free and it’s a great way to find like minded people to our own interests. However since I’m more of a podcast producer now… I tend to stick to the core podcasts I’ve listened to since 2007-2008.

I only added a few recently. Talkin’ Toons with Rob Paulsen Dropped D the best music review podcast out there The Underbase which does Transformers comics reviews…. the rest I’d already had in my podcast section… or they are my own shows or the other GCRN shows. I have no time to seek out new podcasts and keep up with the work I do.

    2. I love Nerdist too. I got to see Nerdist live which was one of the funniest things I have ever experienced.

  2. For TV it depends on the show for me. Something like Walking Dead I have to watch week to week because I know it will get spoiled for me if I don’t. Other shows that can’t really get spoiled, like comedies, I’d rather watch in large chunks.

I think what is wrong with cartoons today is nothing. Not that I love all of them, but I realize I’m not a kid anymore and there are a lot of cartoons that are not meant for me. I feel like people are age were saying the same thing about the cartoons when we were kids.

I don’t think comic book fiction is losing its appeal. Maybe its not as special as it once was but there are some amazing comics out there right now, and now with digital comics you are getting a lot of great independent stuff

    1. Usually you would be right in that each generation has the same nostalgic complaints about the current. With Cartoons though this really doesn’t apply. The 70s were an awful decade for cartoons in general so no one is really going to be looking at that as an adult and say “i wish it was like that” today. People who grew up in the 60s have an argument but not the 70s.

The thing that killed saturday morning cartoons is two fold actually. First, Saved by the Bell killed Saturday Morning Cartoons…yes I just said that, let me repeat, Saved by the Bell killed Saturday Morning Cartoons. The popularity of live action shows first with Saved by the Bell and followed by the many ‘clones’ of it paved the way for live action to take the place of the cartoons and once those faded out a bit they were taken over by morning ‘news’ shows and cartoons were never really given another chance.

Second, along the same time that that is happening, in the background we see the expansion from just your basic 4 channels to your standard 30-35 in the 90s to an explosion of channels across the board including channels that were intended to focus on the type of programming we were used to seeing on Saturday morning. (Cartoon Network, Boomerang, NickToons, etc etc)

It was mainly for these two reasons that at least as far as network TV that saturday morning cartoons were changed forever seemingly.

      1. True the idea of Saturday morning cartoons has maybe come
and gone, and the reasons you point out are a big part of it. I think the
bigger part is that younger generations today do not consume content the way we did as kids. I watched cartoons on Saturday because that is when they were on. Kids today are the on demand generation. They don’t subscribe to specific times or days to watch their entertainment. They can get it whenever they want it. So I think networks realize trying to get kids to watch television at a specific time is nearly impossible.

So I don’t think the quality of cartoons is the reason why we don’t see them on Saturday, it’s just that the business model has changed. You have a cartoons like The Legends of Korra which is absolutely amazing, and I think Adventure Time is well written and is one of those shows that is great for adults and kids.

        1. I actually somewhat disagree with this. I think this falls under the ‘each generation is different’ argument when actually they are much closer to each other than you would think. As a teacher I can tell you that kids LOVE structure and routine pretty much more than anything. A typical kid has certain times they are home and in front of the TV. Usually this consists of after school (2:30-4:30) and on weekends, especially saturday morning/afternoon. It’s just how their schedules work for when they are not at school, eating, sleeping etc. Granted this generation can be more ‘on demand’ than previous generations but that doesnt change WHEN they are watching TV for the most part.

          1. Yes kids like procedure, but if they watch TV from 4-5 it doesn’t
mean that they are watching live TV from 4-5. I read an LA Biz article in late September that talked about how kid’s networks ratings have dropped significantly this year, and have been ever sense streaming services like Netflix started to gain more children’s programing

I have a few younger brothers and sisters and I can tell you very rarely do they even know the day of the week the shows they watch air. They barely watch TV on TV. They go straight for the IPAD or computer. Because they can chat or Facebook while watching.

  3. My favorite podcast is easily WTF with Marc Maron. Seriously some of the greatest interviews I have ever heard.

I prefer to marathon my shows. I think most are better when you watch them back to back. I don’t watch cartoons so I can’t help you there. I do think comic book movies are losing their luster. Wait I just saw the Captain America 2 trailer. I retract my statement GIVE ME MORE.

    1. WTF is pretty sweet. Never heard of Marc Maron before that podcast now I can’t get enough. Have you checked out his TV show on IFC. It’s pretty good as well.

  4. I no longer have cable so I don’t bother with week to week episodes. I either wait for the dvd release or catch it on streaming.

I don’t think comic book fiction is losing its appeal at all. I mean the movies are making bank, and some comics are having better sales than ever. I mean comic fiction is so far reaching its like saying is TV or movies losing their appeal.

  5. I think the issue with cartoons today is how networks don’t let cartoons gain audiences. Unless its a huge hit out of the gate its gone.

I also don’t think comics have lost their luster. All the movies have me more into comics more than ever. Plus with more independent comics and the breakout of Walking Dead we are seeing comics try new and different things.

  6. Well I can’t wait to hear the Top 100 Animated films countdown! Is that coming this week!

I barely watch anything that isn’t streaming or on demand for TV. I can’t think of the last time I watched a show the exact time it came on. In fact even if I’m capable of doing so I will work on something else and come back to it so I can fast forward through commercials.

  7. Cartoons today are garbage. Don’t really know why but I think it has something to do with networks just not treating cartoons with any respect. Unless its Family Guy or meant for adults they don’t care.

    1. Transformers Prime was damn good, so is the NEW TMNT toon, as was Green Lantern, Young Justice, etc etc…… but you are right networks don’t treat them well.

      1. Aren’t two of the 4 cartoons you mentioned cancelled? Lol kind of proves my point. But I do agree the ne TMNT series is great. Still the great stuff is few and far between.

        1. yes JY and GL got axed by CN… Prime wrapped up nicely though. So did Thundercats get cancelled, but as far as “modern” cartoons that I still watch… I like those.

  8. I am a DVR hound when it comes to TV. Skipping through commercials is my superpower.

Am I the only one who likes cartoons today? I love a lot of the Cartoon network stuff, Archer, Bob’s Burgers, among many others. Some of the kids cartoons like TMNT are pretty sweet too.

    1. TMNT is so much more than a kids cartoon, I still love certain cartoons these days. However I HATE that networks don’t give em a chance. Specifically CN panders to the Family Guy crowd with crap like Total Drama etc etc.

    2. I love Bobs Burgers, Archer, TMNT and the Avatar series as a whole. I also love the Total Drama series. The way the put that show together and riff on reality TV cracks me up.
