Talking In Circles – Episode 43 – More Homework

TinC-ipod

Well it is that time again. We have given each other special assignments, something to watch, read, or listen to,  and now we must report on what we think. Does Dan think Saga is everything Greg build it up to be? Does Chuck believe The Day the Earth Stood Still deserve the Science Fiction Classic title? Did Greg finally find a Superman he can get behind? Well let’s just say things get quite interesting this week!

  1. Saga right now is heads and shoulders above anything I am reading. Such vibrant colors and a crazy awesome world. One of the best comics of our time.

    1. Right now the 3 best creator owned comics are C.O.W.L. By Kyle Higgins, Alec Siegel, and Rod Reis… Sex Criminals by Matt Fraction, and Chew by John Layman. They are my top 3 faves and best outside of superheroes or franchised based comics.

      1. I am not familiar with COWL but Sex Criminals and Chew are some of my favorites. Some others would be Red Sonja, Lumberjanes, Locke & Key, Mind MGMT, and anything by Jonathan Hickman.

        1. C.O.W.L. is based on characters from Kyle Higgins’ short film The League. What if there was a superhero labor union in 1960s Chicago!?

    2. There is no doubt in my mind when people look back at this time and ask what were the best comics that Saga won’t be near if not on the top.

  2. I am really surprised to hear all the bad things about The Ulitmates. I have not read it in years but I remember it being a game changer at the time. It seem like a lot of the issues where because it wasn’t like the 616 universe which was kind of the point. It was made to be more adult. I can see how the story itself was basic. That does change though.

    1. I actually 100% agree with most of the issues with The Ultimates. I’ve been saying that run is one of the most overrated in history. Mark Millar gets a huge pass for some reason. He minds me of Frank Miller who is not nearly as good as people make him out to be. Yea they have a great book or two but not everything they do is amazing. People freaked out about The Ultimates because it was more adult than they were used to and ignored the blandess of everything else. Ohh its edgy, who cares when your stories are so unoriginal.

      1. There is a chance what you are saying is true. As I said above its been years since I read it, and I was much younger back then so it may not have the same impact on me today as it did when it was first released. I wouldn’t call Millar overrated though still. He had a great run their in the mid oughts with Wanted, Kick-Ass, and Civil War.

    2. No the issues I had weren’t that it was different than the 616 universe. I don’t mind something being different if it works well. I mentioned I really enjoyed the Ultimates animated movies. I think they just flow better. The story had a lot of things that didn’t make sense to me. Just my opinion. No doubt I will keep reading further because I have heard that it gets better. I’m sure it will

  3. I really loved the skit you guys did this episode. It was super hilarious. Was laughing through and through. You should do more stuff like that.
