Talking in Circles – 104 – Daredevil Season 2 Review

TinC-ipod

This week’s show is jammed packed with goodness. So much to talk about and so little time. Chuck begins with his thoughts on the Supergirl – Flash crossover, Greg revisits a childhood film for the first time in years, and we all give our take on the Rogue One: A Star Wars story trailer. After that we get into the meat of the episode as we review Daredevil Season 2. Did it live up to the hype of the first season? Listen and hear our thoughts.

  1. I have to say Chuck has been killing it these last two episodes with his review on BVS and now Daredevil.Great insight on both accounts. Loved what you said about the relationship between Stick and Matt. It goes overlooked with everything else but it really grew this season as well. Stick calling him the toughest SOB he’s ever met sums up both their relationship and Daredevil as a character perfectly.

    1. Thank you good sir! I appreciate the kind words. Things are clicking lately. And yes that stick line was one of the most satisfying moments in either season

  3. Don’t know if I’d say more than season 1 but it was definitely a strong season. The Punisher was great, probably my favourite character of the season. With Elektra following him.

If I had to say why I didn’t like S2 as much as the first it would be the lack of a strong villain. Kingpin was fantastic. But S2 didn’t really have anything to follow up against him. The Hand felt weak to me. They were a bunch of guys running around in ninja cosplay dropping like flies. They had no impact or sense of unease. When Kingpin was on screen you didn’t know what he was going to do. You felt nervous of him. The Hand weren’t intimidating at all and Nobu was definitely not strong enough of a villain to carry them.
Still a great and enjoyable season. It’s just a testament to how amazing the first season was

    1. I strongly disagree regarding the hand. They were impactful. We must have been watching different fights because they inflicted a great deal of damage onto Daredevil and his allies. Ninjas are designed to be quiet and unassuming only striking when the opportunity there. They are basically the opposite of Kingpin. Kingpin was about will. The Hand is about force.

      1. I’m with you. The Hand has never been an unbeatable force in the comics. Their advantage is their numbers which they got down pat. I had more issues with Elektra than them.

    2. I tend to agree. The second half was missing something. I was waiting for a bigger villain to show up and none showed.

    3. Was I the only one freaked out by The Hand? I found them super creepy in everyway. They were like zombie ninjas. It was awesome.

      1. I’m there with you. When those kids woke up in the hospital it freaked me the hell out.

    4. I can see where you are coming from. Kingpin was great in season one, and this season didn’t quite have a villain that was up to his level. Although I don’t think they ever intended to. I thought it was a smart move to go a different direction where the focus is more on the heroes and characters like Electra and Punisher. Personally I enjoyed the use of The Hand. They did seem like a threat to me and thought the vast majority of their action scenes were great although repetitive.

  5. I’m with Chuck and Greg on Punisher. I prefer the instant change of Frank Castle dying with his family and then The Punisher rising from those ashes. It shows just how impacting that event was.

    1. It was like he was numb to everything. Even how fast he ate Joan’s Thanksgiving dinner, you could tell he hadn’t eaten in a while

      1. Exactly. Its like he doesn’t know how to interact with humans unless he’s shorting them for being criminals.

    2. See I feel Daredevil shows the impact even more because you see the lingering effects of what it did to him. How he tried to cope and failed, how is still broken by it. Daredevil showed him having to face those events and the realization of his family being gone. The movie you never got that. He almost took the easier way out by shutting that side of him completely off.

      1. That’s not Punisher to me. Punisher is cold and emotionless. He is a force a nature not an emotional wreck.

        1. That’s what he becomes. But it’s not out of the realm of reality that a character would develop to be that and not be emotionless out of the gate.

    3. Like mentioned on the Podcast I don’t think there is a right or wrong way. Both have their merits for sure. I prefer watching the evolution more and how this season showed us all the different version of the Punisher you get depending on the writer or comic he is appearing in.
