Talking in Circles – 116 – Independence Day Rebound

TinC-ipod

On this week’s show we bring back one of our favorite games Fact or Fiction. It leads us to talking about a slew of topics including Firework Safety, the Ghostbusters Reboot, Jason Bourne, the future of CW DC shows, and the outlook for video game films. Before that we give a mini review of Independence Day Resurgence which we all had very different takes on.

  1. So I am not the only one who liked Independence Day: Resurgence? That’s great to hear.. It had its problems but I over all thought it was fun. I agree it would have been better with Will Smith, but Jeff Goldblum was still great.

  2. I don’t know why but for some reason your Fact or Fiction episodes tend to be some of your best episodes. As someone who did see the new Ghostbusters already I can say it is not a disaster. It is merely okay. Had some funny parts and thought the special effects look good. No where near as good as the original but not the disaster the trailers made you think it would be. C+ or B- material. .

    1. Thanks! I’m not sure either. Maybe because we have done it so much. Kind of glad to hear about that regarding Ghostbusters. Kind of what I figured.

    2. It wasn’t a train wreck. Thor steals the movie and makes it worth the $5-6 to see an early matinee. Leslie Whatserhname was not terrible. None of the women were terrible. None were great either. Kate McKinnon has her moments but also draws too much attention to herself.

I am 99% sure the BIll Murray cameo, even when he is there interacting with the ghostbusters, was entirely green-screened and he was never actually on set. It really shows also. Lots of other green-screening shows in it.

Some effects were bad enough to notice. Most of the rest were acceptable enough for the film.

The villain and plot were kind of weak.

Could have been worse. Could have been better. I give it a solid time-wasting decent of 7 out of 10.

      1. Saw it yesterday and honestly enjoyed it. Maybe I would have enjoyed it less if I was hyped, but I felt it was solid entertainment.
The comedy fluctuated a lot. There were parts where the whole (packed) theater went wild and parts where only a few people laughed uncomfortably.
Characters/actors were mostly great. McKinnon and Hemsworth were both hilarious and I didn’t find McKinnon’s character annoying at all. Wiig’s character as the “straight man” was a little dull but not aggressively bad. I liked Leslie Jones a lot more than I thought I would. She was over the top occasionally but she had a bit more depth than I expected and was likable. I thought McCarthy was the biggest disappointment. She didn’t have the screen presence she usually has and felt diminished.

The cameos were a mixed bag. Some of them felt really forced and tired, but I did like Sigourney Weaver’s. Murray’s could have been good if they didn’t push it. Everyone laughed at him being the ghost skeptic on TV and they should have left it there.

The design of the ghosts was cool, I really liked Rowan taking the form of the Ghostbusters logo as the big baddie, and the final action scenes were a ton of fun. Seeing Slimer was neat too.

  5. The only action franchise that can compete with Bourne in my mind is Mad Max at this point. I like Bond but it has way too many bad movies to be considered great. Mad Max has no bad movies. Some age better than others that is true.

    1. What about Bond…James Bond? When you have that many movies you are going to have a few stinkers. Doesn’t it also say something when you can have a bad movie but rebound from that and make a great one. If not for Bond would we even have something like Bourne?

    2. Mad Max has two good movies out of four. The first one is okay at best and Beyond Thunderdome is just bad. Bourne Legacy is also bad so if you are counting Bond’s bad movies against it you have to count that one too no?
