Talking In Circles – Episode 04 – Taking it Too Far

talkingincircles--featured

Hey internet you are taking it too far!…or are you? In the latest episode of Talking in Circles Chuck, Dan, and Greg talk about some of the biggest hot button issues hitting the world of Geekdom and ask if our hatred or praise is going overboard. For some reason Superman was a huge part of this episode including a discussion on Man of Steel and the latest casting of  Lex Luthor. Dan also has some special words for Mother Nature as he attempts to warm up her chilly persona. All in all a lot of fun and of course a lot of randomness.

  1. I must say I was very impressed with Chuck’s take on the Jessie Eisenberg casting. Very well thought out, looked at the entire issue, and provided a great deal of insight. Loved how you gave a very fair and balanced approach picking out both the positive and negative.

Must say I disagree with Greg on Man of Steel being overly sentimental. Maybe with the Smallville scenes, but overall I thought it lacked any emotion and was really dry at times like a stiff board. Also Superman has killed before in the comics, Zod in fact. So it does happen, but on rare occasion.

    1. Thanks, for sharing! I think the Smallville scenes are where my problems are, along with other scenes here and there. The movie didn’t really stand a chance with me though. I just don’t care for the character and it is hard for me to pin down why , beside some general answers, like he bores me. To each his own I guess!

      1. I thought Man of Steel updated Superman for this generation. He was more badass and not as corny as the older version. You could tell Nolan
had a hand in the way the story was told. It was a much more realistic sense on how to handle such an out of this world character.

    2. Thanks man. And I did not know that actually that he has killed Zod before. I may try to find those issues. Sounds interesting. It is a little different in the comics I suppose. I guess I was more influenced by Smallville than I realized. That’s kind of my ideal take on Superman’s inner character. Given the situation in Man of Steel I don’t blame old Supes at all for what he did. I just question them writing that in right off the bat in his first big boy fight. But if they build off it in the sequel it could be pretty interesting.

  2. I laughed so hard listening to the letter to Mother Nature.
Nearly did a spit take when the music came on near the end. lMAO. Great stuff!

  3. A lot of fun discussion this episode. Liked the talk regarding Superman and if he should kill or not and that struggle he goes through.

Regarding Superman did any of you guys like the older Superman movies like the Christopher Reeve stuff? Those are my favorite

The Taking it Too far angle was kind of cool. Don’t think I’ve seen something quite like that before.

    1. Cool thanks for the feedback. Yeah I love the Christopher Reeve movies. I still think they are the standard for Supes as far as the big screen. I tend to stick with the first two however, 3 and 4 were kinda weird haha. But I do love those a lot because it just comes across as epic, maybe John Williams’ score is what does it but there’s just something about those movies. Reeve to me nailed that role and he really was the Superman that people could look up to.

    2. If I am going to watch a Superman movie it’s gonna be the ones with Reeve, those are the benchmark for Superman. I agree with Chuck and probably the rest of the world that you need to stick with 1 & 2. One of my favorite podcasts “How did this get made” had a great review of the 4th one (I’m pretty sure it was the fourth one, I have a terrible memory it makes it tough to win a discussion).

  4. I have to disagree with Greg’s distaste for the Superman character. He can be written boring but he can also be really awesome. In Justice League cartoon you really get a sense of the character of Superman and all his dimensions, especially when he fights Darkseid. They make his struggle to hold back a big part of his character.

    1. Thanks for writing! I really enjoy the JL cartoons. It’s great to hear everyone’s opinions on the subject of Superman.

  5. Just started listening to the podcast. I dig the vibe you guys are going for so far. Feels like hanging out with people I know. Fun and free. If I wanted to craft one of those open letters who would is send them too?
