Talking In Circles – Episode 17 – Comedic Icons

talkingincircles--featured

They are funny, they are here to amuse you, and they may even be clowns depending on your taste. They are the iconic faces of comedy. In this week’s episode we try to determine who exactly those faces are as we debate who would make up the Mount Rushmore of comedy. From stand-up to sitcoms to slapstick to silent films, we talk about it all. Before we get to the funny stuff we discuss our thoughts on The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Warning: we do enter some spoiler territory, but we probably spoil less than the trailers did.

  1. I would pay to see that Rushmore. Once Bill Murray was a must I was on board. Some I feel should be mentioned are Bill Hicks and Lenny Bruce. Both are two of the best stand ups of all time and had huge influence and still do today. I probably would have chosen Mel Brooks over Cosby but it’s a hard choice either way.

    1. Bill HIcks is one of my all time favorite comics. So sad he died well before his time. I worry to many aren’t even aware of his comedy these days.

    2. It was a tough choice but personally I just thought Cosby’s body of work was so much more extensive. Honestly tho there are a ton of names we could substitute in there. The great thing about comedy is the variety and how there are enough comedians to appeal to anyone’s sense of humor.

    3. Oh yes Bill Hicks and Lenny Bruce should have been mentioned. I”m sure there are a few more we forgot as well.

  2. I love listening to the way you guys break down movies. You pick them apart turn them side ways and kick the tires in fun ways. You should all watch the same movie more often.

For Rushmore I’m on Chucks side with Eddie Murphy. Yes he doesn’t have much lately but in his day there was no one better. Raw is my all time favorite stand up special and Coming to America is one of my all time comedies as well.

    1. Thanks for the praise. I wish we could watch more of the same movies as well it def makes it more interesting when we all have our fresh input. Eddie Murphy was great and I agree Coming to America is hilarious. I love how he plays so many different characters in the barber shop lol

      1. I always go to 48 Hours with Murphy. Coming to America is great but my favorite is 48 and Beverly Hills Cop

    2. I’m sure we’ll have a few more movies this summer that we’ll all see. Some of the bigger movies for sure. :)

    3. I’m sure you could start a movement Kurt, to have Dan and the guys take over hosting duties for MWIRE Weekly!! :)

  3. I’m glad you guys tried to make sure you had one female on the list. For whatever reason female comedians are over looked. One person you may want to think of is Weird Al. He covers a ground like no one else and his career has been going on forever. And he appeals to all ages.

    1. Yeah it was important to have a female comedian on there. The only other female comedians I could make a case for is like maybe Melissa McCarthy and one of my favorites Mo Collins from MadTV who was hilarious with the “Lorraine” skits. Seriously, everyone needs to google Lorraine from Mad tv lol

  4. Two people that should have been mentioned are Tray Parker and Matt Stone. Of course you have South Park but also Team America which is one of the funniest comedies of all time. And they broke out on Broadway with The Book of Mormon. You just have to forget about Basketball

  5. One guy I forgot to mention during the episode was stand-up comedian Mitch Hedberg. He passed away at a young age but that guy was hilarious. If he was still with us I think he would be putting out alot of quality stuff. If you’ve never heard of him you should def check him out on youtube.
