  1. My top 3 would be Lego Movie, Toy Story 3, and How to Train Your Dragon. Those movies to me are head and shoulders above most animated movies that come out. And I would say that I agree that animation has been great these last five years. Each year we get two or three amazing movies and not many other genres could claim that.

  2. Called me biased but my favorite animated movie is Wreck-It Ralph. That movie is just so stinking creative. It’s better than anything Pixar has done in years. I can see the argument for Toy Story 3 but I prefer the first movie honestly. Lego Movie is fantastic as well. Just thinking about the answer makes me realize how awesome animation has been over the years. Like a ton of legit 10 star animated movies. And even more 8 or 9’s.

    1. I agree it’s really picked up in the last 5 years especially! Much better than the decline of the disney era in the late 90s and even in my opinion, better than the Pixar era where you only seemed to get 1 great (pixar) film every year or so often, but nothing else.

  3. I know people love The Lego Movie, but I just didn’t connect with it. I’m not saying it is a bad movie, but I don’t think it’s the great film so many claim it to be. Brave, on the other hand, is much better than it gets credit for. It didn’t come out of the gate as a top-notch film, particularly from Pixar, but I still feel it is a strong film. Personally, I find it more enjoyable and emotional than Wreck-It-Ralph, which is a fine film, but not one that I feel I need to see repeatedly. It has been a while though, so I would like to revisit it to see what I missed since everyone else seems to love it. John C. Riley and Sarah Silverman do a great job with the voice acting though. Toy Story 3 is a solid film, and perfectly tied the other films into a nice finale. I always cringe when they say they are making another one…and they’re making another one. But they have so far been able to continue to make fun and exciting films with these characters and come up with plots that keep the franchise fresh. Last night I started watching The Wind Rises and I love it. I only stopped because I was up before 5 AM and I was falling asleep in the last half hour of the film. The animation is gorgeous as usual and the story and characters are engaging. I expect it to be one of my favorites as well. The Dragons franchise is great. I liked the first film well enough, but the world they have created in TV, the shorts, and now the second film, have made me a true fan. Definitely deserving of being on the list. I’m only halfway through the podcast, so I will reserve further commends for later. Cheers!

    1. Tangled. Definitely on my top ten. It is the strongest of the new CGI Disney films, in my opinion. I think it was a more complete package than the other films, which are also good. Frozen, for example, is another good film. I enjoyed it the first time, but the hype made me ask what was the big deal? However, having seen it a few more times since (my wife is a huge fan, plus, the animation is incredible) I see why there is such love for the film. For me, too, I was hooked from the beginning of the film with Anna’s song, “Do you wanna build a snowman?” which I thought was just brilliant, and is my favorite song in the film. That relationship they set up was so pivotal and pulled me into the story.

Despicable Me was a complete surprise. My wife and I saw that in theaters. We wanted something funny and light and it was so much fun. I admit it wouldn’t be my number one, probably more like #7 or #8, but it is very good and I can watch it again and again. Steve Carrell was great in the film.

Maybe next time you need to limit the list to North American releases so that Dan doesn’t go off the rails with his foreign films list. :) I’m fine with films like The Wind Rises and Ernest and Celestine because they received NA releases, but did the others? I’m sure they are great films and I have already added some to my watch list.

I like JD’s explanations and will be seeking out his podcast for more movie news and reviews. Very thorough and valuable insights that give you an idea of what to expect from the film without spoiling anything.

      1. Awesome comments Tim! I disagree with your thoughts on brave, the Lego movie and wreck it Ralph but I’m right there with you on the rest!
