  1. This was the film which introduced me to Miyazake, and even in the form of a poor quality VHS on an ordinary TV, it was amazing. It has the feel of the original comic books, but plays out wonderfully on the screen – you don’t need to know the comics but they flesh out a lot of the characters.

    1. I haven’t read the comics, but the special features on the DVD/Blu-ray detail how he couldn’t get the movie made because the studios didn’t believe it would be successful since many animes are based on manga/comics. So, they worked with a team to create the comics and proceeded to make the film. The Blu-ray is an improvement over the DVD, but the DVD is still very good quality. I kept the DVD because I actually like the menus and original cover/poster art.

  3. I was somewhat taken back by Amanda’s score. I thought from what she was saying she enjoyed it. I’d be interested in what prompted such a low score on this one.

    1. I’ll ask her for some clarification…not sure if falling asleep every time she tried to watch it impacted it or not

    2. We discussed the difference in her score between Nausicaa and Mortal Kombat in episode 101 (oh, spoilers!) and she yelled pretty loudly at me: something about how she couldn’t rate this one higher if she kept falling asleep while trying to watch it. I can’t fight her logic, but anything lower than an 8 almost feels like a blaspheme.

      1. Oh I agree this is a perfect score of me. In my top 10 of all time animated films. I still argue it’s Miyazaki’s best.
