  1. I’m surprised to hear you say 2014 looks like a bad year for animation. Lego Movie, Boxtrolls, How to Train Your Dragon 2, Big Hero 6, Rio 2, among others looks like they have a lot of potential. I thought 2013 was a super weak year for animation. Frozen was good but everything else in theaters was mediocre.

    1. OK boxtrolls animation style I don’t care for so I won’ see it. That isn’t me saying I hate it. LOL Saw the first Training of the Dragon… don’t have any interest in a sequel to that. Never saw first Rio… so doubtful I’ll see it’s sequel. Again just a lack of interest.

Lego Movie… I’m avoiding like the black plague. EVERYONE is hyping it up so much. Plus after reading our colleague in podcasting’s blog about the ending I tend to agree with Michael Wilson. The ending of the film sends a mixed and BAD message. You can read that here:

thanks for continuing to listen! I hope my guest spot run will bring some different things to the show.

      1. I’m not sure what you mean by hype? If a movie is really
great shouldn’t we celebrate it? I didn’t have an issue with the ending and
have to strongly disagree it gave a mixed message. I felt the message was
        rather clear.

        1. ok maybe hype is the wrong word… OVERRATED is more like it…. EVERY single thing I’ve seen about it since Feb 7th when it came out is that it’s the BEST thing ever. SURE I wanna see it for Will Arnett’s batman, but other than that… as I stated in the ep… I care nothing for generic lego created characters… If this was a big screen lego dc heroes or villains sure I’d slam my $6-10 down to see it in the theater. It just isn’t one of those films that I must see now. And I have more important interests that I’m setting my money aside for.. Plus I’m just so sick of seeing it being talked about everywhere. When that happens with anything I’ll avoid it for the longest possible time.

          1. How can you call it overrated when you haven’t seen it? That
doesn’t make sense to me. If you see it don’t like it ok that’s fine. But to call it over hyped or overrated without seeing it again makes you sound like you are just bitter because you aren’t in the conversation. If you don’t have interest in it, ok you have that right. But to condemn those of us who are enjoying it again just seem bitter.

Isn’t the purpose of social media is to talk about things we enjoy? In Altered Geek you talked about how we talk too much about a movie that isn’t even out yet, now you seem to be complaining that we are talking about a movie that is now out but talked about too much. Using my power of observation you seem like someone who enjoys complaining. I’m guilty of it myself sometimes, ok maybe all the time.

Do fanboys get over excited about things. For god sakes yes.
Fan is short for fanatic. There’s an animated movie coming out February that is actually good. That is something to get excited about.

          2. you do realize that not everyone on the internet has to be in every single conversation right? There are things I follow that others do not… and sometimes those people don’t like when I constantly rave about my enjoyments…. I sat through 5 seasons of a 95% boring TV series for me…. I’m not wasting my time like that again, just because everyone else says it’s good.

It has nothing to do with whether or not I have seen the Lego Movie. After seeing all the trailers and varying opinions either for or against the film… I’ve made up my mind that it’s something I can wait for… and I have no PRESSING NEED to see it in a theater. That’s my whole point here. I am super excited for need for sped… and the muppets film next month. Yet I doubt I’ll be singing the praises of either film after a week or so of each being out. When I watch films I give my opinion good or bad and then move onto the next thing. No I am not bitter that everyone in the world seems to love the lego movie…. I just choose not to see it at this point in time, because it’s all I see people talking about. And I just don’t care. I grew out of enjoying legos a long time ago.

And as I stated above… unless it’s lego versions of characters or franchises I like… for example star wars… I just don’t care.

          3. I don’t think you are realizing what I am saying. I am not
saying you have to like the movie, watch it, enjoy it, or talk about it. I’m saying you complaining about people talking about how much they love something, without even seeing the thing they are talking about, sounds bitter. Like the kid who couldn’t go on the grown up rides so he calls the ride dumb because he wasn’t able to join in on the fun.

You asked me if I realize not everyone needs to join in on conversations, of course I do. My question is do you? People love something, you don’t have interest, yet instead of moving onto something else you diminish others excitement by calling it overrated, overhyped, or whatever. Nowhere did I say you must watch it or like it, my issue is its rather arrogant to push my opinion down by calling my love an overreaction just because you are not interested in the product.

Like I mentioned previously, in Altered Geek you said you hated when people talked about a movie before it is even out, which is a 100% valid opinion and a very good point. Now a movie is out and people are talking about it, and you have an issue they are talking about it. I don’t understand that. Its like you are attracted to complaining about something.

If you don’t wish to join in on that love or excitement good for you. Honestly that’s great you stick to your guns and don’t let others change your opinion. I just don’t get why you have issues when you opinion doesn’t align with others.

          4. “People love something, you don’t have interest, yet instead
of moving onto something else you diminish others excitement by calling it
            overrated, overhyped, or whatever”

            ________________________________________________

I have moved on… I said my piece in this ep… I’m not interested in the film. And no I’m not dimishing anyone else enjoyment of it. I’m not commenting on here, facebook, or anywhere else in social media saying multiple times that I just don’t care about the lego movie. I might have posted 1 thing when everyone else was…. after that there was this ep… I said my piece and moved onto march films that I am excited about.

          5. I can’t fathom the idea of letting myself like something or not like something purely based on how many other people like it or dislike it….that’s utter madness!

          6. the way i look at it is have you ever seen the same ad on TV over an over again you change the channel every time it pops up….. that’s what the lego movie is for me at this point.

          7. Talking about being exposed to it a lot and talking about hype and people being excited about it are two very different things.

    2. I agree with Mike about the Boxtrolls animation style. I don’t particularly care for it as I don’t for clay-mation. Now that being said, I won’t comment there as I would be ill informed. I’ve seen the first HTTYD and it was okay. I don’t have ambition to see the 2nd but will eventually. Big Hero 6, I’ve never heard of and doesn’t look enticing but again won’t comment. Rio 2 I think could be good. I liked the first enough but again it’s a DVD rental for me.

I do agree that 2013 was mediocre other than Despicable Me 2 and Frozen. Lego Movie I’ve watched and enjoyed it for what it is. Despite being a lot of goofy jokes or recurring run on jokes it was good. Loved the animation and the pace was great. So I’d say that Lego has potential to be the best of the year but again that’s my opinion before seeing the rest.

I do not avoid films due to the “Hype”. I just choose what looks best to me for the year and go see those. If I see the others it is by DVD release. I do eventually attempt ALL the theater release films. But usually don’t get surprised all that much by what I chose not to watch. Hope my explanation is more clear but if not feel free to let me know.

  2. So anyone else have any thoughts on the films Steve and I mentioned that we are looking forward to?

  3. When you guys talked about how Hollywood needs to get more new ideas and not just borrow them or reuse ones that have been done before you could not be more right. We certainly need more originality out there. What I found curious though was none of the movies you seemed to be based on franchise or sequels of something. Well Steve did mention he was interested in Transcendence which is a new property. Are they any original films out there this year that interest you guys at all?

    1. I will re-look through my choices and see if there are any this year. Some are sequels and others are newer properties within the last year with them. My choices tend to be stemmed from fictional stories and not so much true stories. Also mine tend to be based on casts. I am specific with my choices on actors/actresses.

    2. I’m very franchise based in my film watching….. what I meant with NEW stuff instead of remakes is that certain remakes that are announced just make me cringe, because I feel that regardless if it needs to be brought back for a new audience…. some film franchises and individual films should never ben remade. Steve did get me to potentially check out transcendence … other then that though…. 2014 is comicbook movie year for me with giant robots as well.

      1. I love franchise movies for sure as well. I just don’t like how everything needs to be a franchise now and we can’t make just one movie. Listening to MWIRE Weekly I heard them mention they are planning a King Arthur movie and before they even make it they are talking about doing six movies. Come on! Let’s settle down with this. That’s why I try to support movies that take on new ideas and are more concerned with making a good movie rather than just money. Star Wars was a great movie first, franchise second. Today we have that order switched around.

  4. After I post this I’m moving on from talking about The Lego Movie ever again…..

THE LEGO MOVIE – WHY I DON’T THINK IT’S AS AWESOME AS EVERYONE ELSE:

I grew up playing with Legos like most everyone did. I enjoyed creating what was on the box, and then making my own creations. But after I was about 12 or 13 years old I GREW out of the lego enjoyment. And today as a 34 year old single guy… I just don’t have any feeling about Legos either good or bad.
As far as Lego ahnd their animated stuff that they have been doing… I’ve loved the Star Wars stuff… have yet to se the DC stuff… I like the lego animated films-shows when they are using pop culture characters… or franchise characters.

I’ve been OVER EXPOSED to this NEW The Lego Movie… I’ve seen all the trailers and 95% of my friends online say OH. MY. GOD. IT’S. THE. BEST. THING. EVER. IT’S SOOOOOO AWESOME!!! I’ve never been one to conform to anything. If I like something I like it, If I hate something, I ignore it and let everyone else have their enjoyment of whatever that is, and if I am indifferent to something well there ya go.

What I loathe about The Lego Movie’s release … actually has nothing to do with the film itself. Ever since February 7, 2014 when the film was released… I’d see my friends online say … “GO SEE THE LEGO MOVIE… that is all.” Or something that would be a rave review for the film. I did not read any reviews before seeing the film myself. My initial reaction to when this type of thing happens is TO WAIT until the hype of the feature whether positive or negative dies down… so I can enjoy it on my own.

So last night I went to a 9:45pm showing and saw the film…. something I RARELY ever do… since I prefer to go to movies during the day. I was watching along… and the first twenty minutes didn’t impress me. I then took to Facebook and twitter making several posts……

I was wondering what other people saw in the film that was so AWESOME that I was seeing. I attempted to go in without the negative opinion I had before about the film. Sadly that didn’t last long. As soon as the AWESOME song came up…. I felt my teeth being coated with sugar… ugh……I’d rather listen to the narwahls song that’s how much a couldn’t stand the AWESOME song, and everyone knows how I loathe the narwahls song.

I like the animation in the film, yet I have a huge problem with the lego ocean…. that thing looks like it’d never work as far as the surface of it. The voice cast is great too, but The only other thing I liked about this film was Batman, Will Arnett did an amazing job.

There are two messages in the film there’s an anti conformist message, which as I stated above I’m so not into conforming…… so I guess on that level it’s great. Then there is the Lego Company working in their own message of telling us how to play with our toys. Now I doubt the Lego Company was actually responsible for that, but it’s still there. And yes I do see that it also promotes being creative, but at the end of the day Batman and the Villain were the best parts of the film for me….. the rest of the Lego created characters like Emmett… are just meh in my eyes.

Now that I’ve see it….Do I HATE the Lego movie …? no, I simply just don’t find it as enjoyable as eeryone else did.

So there ya have it… I’ve seen the Lego movie… I’ve given my thoughts on it….. now everyone can we please move onto something else? I bet next month someone on my friends list will be saying this exact same thing back to me… when I sing the praises of NEED FOR SPEED!!! LOL
