  1. So, was it Sketch who said he didn’t vote for staples like Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny or Tom & Jerry because he doesn’t like them? Wow! I’m shocked. Hopefully, most of the contributors did not take this same approach. I get that you may favor other characters personally, but I cannot take Sketch’s picks seriously when it’s a personal favorites list rather than a list that is more well-rounded in looking at the historical and cultural significance of characters, etc. over decades of animation. Epic fail.

    1. That wasn’t me (Sketch). I like Mickey, Bugs and Tom & Jerry and I took iconic-ness heavily into account as I felt we all should regardless of how much we like those characters. I have some blind spots and didn’t vote for all the Looney Tunes I probably should have but the only tremendously popular characters I purposefully wouldn’t vote for are more recent characters like Johnny Test and Naruto Uzumaki, both are very popular characters but they annoy the crap out of me and I begrudgingly included SpongeBob and rather high up despite never liking that show or the character because he’s unquestionably an icon.

    2. Having not seeing the lists I’m guessing most did vote for some of the most iconic characters. I voted for a number of both Disney and Loonie Tunes. When it came to my list I tried to avoid personal bias and judge based on impact, quality, and historical context as much as I could.

  2. Wow so many Anime characters I cannot believe it. If any GI Joe was going to make this list Snake Eyes is the right choice. Personaly I always liked Destro over Cobra Commander but whatever I get why he was chosen.

Jessica Rabbit is the biggest head scratcher to me. How does she make the list and how does she beat out Roger Rabbit

  5. Yeah I don’t get including the Muppets. I don’t see how you could include them in animation. They aren’t at all the same.

Besides that enjoying the countdown so far. Great to hear a new mix of voices. And any list that has Slappy Squirrel is considered a good list. That is fact.

    1. I kind of like having muppets. Adds a bit of mystery to everything. Also I see where they are coming from and they kind of fit. It’s a little odd but most muppets were animated at one point or another.

  6. Yeah I don’t get including the Muppets. I don’t see how you could include them in animation. They aren’t at all the same.

  7. I’m the top commenter on here? Huh. Okay. Little surprised by that, but alright. Some thoughts.

JESSICA RABBIT- You guys can’t name an interesting characteristic of Jessica Rabbit outside of looks? How about FEMMA FATALE?! What the hell? On top of being a more iconic character than Roger, (I ranked her 25, apparently higher than anybody) she’s way more interesting, and more active. She’s the one, who’s trying to keep Roger working by playing patty cake, she’s the one, who goes from good side and bad side to help out her husband, she’s manipulative, she’s playing better angles than others. And she’s mysterious, you don’t know exactly what she’s up to or why for much of the film, and that’s a fascinating fact about her as well. She’s doing a lot in the movie, you guys need to rewatch it again and really keep an eye on everything Jessica does, and why, you guys are crazy for dismissing her just for looks. How did Roger get Jessica, how about what does Jessica see in Roger; yeah, laughter but he’s the celebrity, she’s just a singer in a nightclub and she could’ve had anybody with fame and money, including Roger’s boss. There’s way more to her than you guys gave credit for. I’m shocked you guys are so dismissive of her.

ELMO-Yeah, Elmo needs to be disqualified. Muppets are not animation. If that’s the case, then let’s throw Lamb Chop on here, or-eh, Daniel Stripe Tiger (Yes, I know there’s an animated version of him now but still) or let’s throw one of Jeff Dunham’s characters on here or Kukla & Ollie….. The only “Muppet” I even remotely considered was Skeeter, and she originated as a cartoon character. Animation is drawn either on a computer or a piece of paper, and sure, there’s animated version of Elmo, but, no, he’s wasting a spot that could’ve gone to someone who really belongs on here.

SKELETOR- I’ll let She-Ra, go, I do think She-Ra’s sorta interesting, but this fascination with “He-Man” still freaks me out and Skeletor in particular, is not a great character. He’s basically your typical bad guy who’s plan of the week fails, he might as a well be Rita Repulsa. He’s interesting and has a cool backstory sorta, but, I don’t get how this franchise, holds up other than camp value.

JOY-I hope other voters were smart and if they put on their ballot, they put Riley Anderson higher. When you really think about it, they’re all inside her. I didn’t have Joy, but I had Riley Top 20, because of that; she’s the interesting character, and I hope other voters recognized that.

DIRK DASTARDLY-And I’m worried we have too many villains on this list. Talk about arbitrarily villain. You need a villain, throw in Dirk Dastardly, basically. Um, he didn’t make my ballot; he wasn’t interesting to me.

SLAPPY SQUIRREL- I didn’t have Slappy on my ballot, but I get it; that’s a good choice.

COBRA COMMANDO-I have never understood the appeal of G.I. JOE, at all. Especially ’80s “G.I. JOE”; I always thought, aren’t we over pretending the military is something we should aspire too? Did you all not watch “M*A*S*H” growing up, what the-, yeah, so, “G.I. JOE” nostalgia probably more than any other franchise annoys me.

TETSUO-As much as I like “Akira”, I kinda agree, as a character I don’t think he really belongs on here, but I do understand it.

DONATELLO-We’ve got to stop with the Ninja Turtles nostalgia, this is way out of hand at this point. I’m shocked that people can separate-, well, first of all, I still say the only interesting character, in any incarnation from the franchise is April O’Neal, and secondly, this franchise was never good. It’s fun to reminisce on the nostalgia, but I over it by age six, but it’s never held up well and most of the recent incarnations, sorta prove that it doesn’t hold up well to one degree or another. And if you’re gonna put the Turtles on here, they should be grouped together; I don’t buy the argument they’re distinctive enough as characters by themselves. I don’t know where the voters are coming from on this one.

HEATHCLIFF- I can see an argument if this was a comic strip character list of putting Heathcliff on here, maybe, I’ve have about fifteen Peanuts characters ahead of him, but even going back recently; he’s barely a character to me. Maybe there’s more to him in later incarnations, which I’m amazed to learn exist, but yeah I don’t get this at all. And I’m taking U.S. Acres over Cadillac Cats also, they hold up better too.

MULAN-I can see her making it as a character, but yeah, “Mulan” is not one of Disney’s better films and I didn’t even seriously consider her. And I do think her status as a Disney Princess is sketchy and I think there’s some better ones out there. Including the two from “Frozen”, but um, yeah, I expect better more interesting Disney Princesses to be higher if Mulan somehow made it.

CHIP & DALE- Well, one of the things I did, when ranking my ballot, was that I ended up creating multiple lists, some for shows or franchises that had multiple characters, other were movie character based, another was TV show based, etc., and Chip & Dale, just missed my list; they were the highest-ranked Disney characters that just missed (Disney shorts characters, I mean) even though I do love “Chip & Dale: Rescue Rangers” and that show holds up well too even now.

CORALINE-That was the one Leika/stop motion character, other than Wallace & Gromit, I think, that I seriously thought about making my list, just missed. (Gumby, I thought about, but eh, no, he’s not that memorable; I’m surprised he showed up, but I don’t have a problem with him) I am glad you have a lot of female characters though; I did make an effort to have a lot of female characters on my ballot.

DROOPY- Yes, he is an MGM character, and a Tex Avery one, not Hanna-Barbera. But totally deserves to be on here; I had him on my ballot.

ASTRO BOY- If I was gonna put any old anime series character from that era on the list, it would’ve been Speed Racer.

Other than that, yeah, you guys apparently look more fondly at ’80s action cartoons than I do; but other than that, I’m worried. No, “The Simpsons”, no “Family Guy” character yet, no “Peanuts” character yet, no “Looney Tunes” (And seriously, the anti-Looney Tunes bashing, is a bit strange, btw; I had about seven or eight on my ballot, not including Tiny Toons or Animaniacs, so, seems like Warner Bros are underrepresented to me) no adult sitcom series characters at all in fact, so far? Other than the two from Space Ghost, and they came earlier. That’s bizarre to me. I’m hoping this, spreading out, instead of narrowing within franchises wasn’t something done across the ballots, ’cause while I think it’s tempting, it’s not really fair. Some franchises have more great and long-lasting characters than others and that should be acknowledged. I know, it’s a bit of a pain, to include a bunch of them, but if they deserved a Top 100 spot to me, I put them on there, so I’m hoping, we don’t see, only one or two Simpsons or only one or two Family Guy’s or “Peanuts” etc. and that they come in and start overtaking the list from here on in.

    1. I don’t know why I wrote “Big thoughts” up there, just ignore “big”. That was weird.

    2. As mentioned below, Droopy was both MGM and later HB. When I commented that you were the top commenting person, unfortunately that was based on nothing statistically. I was just stating that you give us a lot of in depth comments on our facebook matchups and these Top 100 Lists.

I’ll comment more on what I agree and disagree with about your post in a day or two. BTW who was bashing on looney tunes?

      1. One of you guys was really saying that, “Man, after anime, I wasn’t interested in Looney Tunes” afterwards. That,- I mean, I do get that, to some extent, but otherwise I kinda think, whoever it was saying that, and he said it a couple times, was kinda dismissive. I get being in that faze; I was in when I first discovered Miyazaki like everyone was, but then I eventually back and realized the genius of Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner, to give an example, and how timeless those character are and the animation, so…- so that kinda backhanded-ness towards them annoyed a bit.

And I’m glad you feel I give a lot of in-depth comments, thanks.

    3. Have you watched any of the Ninja Turtles cartoon outside of the 80’s version? Both the 2003 cartoon and the current animated series are great and yes make all the Ninja Turtles into fully fleshed out interesting characters.

They should be put together my mind. They were some of the best known characters worldwide for a very long time and still live onto this day. If you had a list of the best animated characters and didn’t include them the list would be incomplete in my mind.

      1. I watched a couple episodes of, I think the ’03 version, the one that looked like it was anime-style and April O’Neal was wearing a cut-off blouse, for some reason, and this is where I can’t possibly disagree more, because it’s then I realized, Oh my God, these characters, the Turtles have absolutely no depth, no real character traits, and I can’t disagree more. They’re not interesting, outside of them together as superheroes, and frankly I don’t think they’re that good at that. April’s is the only interesting character, she’s the one that has the secret of them, is pushing for them, is getting herself in trouble, investigating everybody and everything, eh… “Saved By the Bell” character have more layers to them than the Turtles, I can’t possibly there’s an argument for them, separately, much less together. They were cool as a dumb kid concept, but that’s about as far as they go to me. And even in those future version, April’s the only interesting one. I hear she’s a little kid in a new version, that’s actually interesting and fun! She’s interesting, the turtles themselves, I’m sorry, but no. They’re character traits at best.

        1. See you are basing your opinion on the show clearly off the original TV series. The newer shows completely rewrites a lot of the dynamics of the original. Especially a character like Michaelangelo who was given a lot of room for development.

The personalities are taken from the books but borrow from the more refined and animated (no pun intended) characterizations of the 1st film. Unlike the Fred Wolf series, these turtles are real ninjas and strike out of, and fade into the shadows. Not fighting in broad daylight like they did constantly in the former. At the core of this series is the values and virtues of the family unit: brotherhood and father-son relationships, just like the original books. A fan like myself couldn’t have been more pleased.

Every episode led into the next. Every storyline flowed into the next one. So this was basically a 116 installment serial, which rocks out. Every single main character and most of the recurring ones were explored as much as they could be without things getting redundant. The turtles went from being strangers to the world, to being urban heroes and, finally, to global champions. Casey Jones and April O’Neil went from being combative around each other, to being a confused about how they felt and then becoming a real item that had nothing to hide. As for the recurring characters, there’s Nano. He popped up five times throughout the 116 episode run. Each appearance saw him gradually shift from being a villain, with the mindset of a child, to a hero who’d finally come of age. None of these changes ever felt rushed. They all felt natural, like gravity

    4. It has been a long while since I watched Roger Rabbit so perhaps you are right. Thinking back to the movie as a whole she never came off as all that great of a character to me.

I did not rank Riley Anderson on my list but did rank Sadness. I get that they are technically part of her, but clearly designed to be their own characters. She is the product of their actions but I don’t find her nearly as memorable or interesting as someone like Sadness.

      1. I agree with Dan, Just because they are technically a part of her, I still view them all as distinct characters and Riley just isn’t that great on her own.

    1. Actually he was later produced by Hanna-Barbera and appeared in multiple HB properties. You are right though he originated with MGM and we failed to mention that

      1. After MGM I most familiar with Droopy being in Tom and Jerry Kids, didn’t know HB produced some of Droopy’s later shorts.

        1. It’s all good, I should have really listed him as MGM first and foremost at any rate!

  8. I’m the top commenter on here? Huh. Okay. Little surprised by that, but alright. Some thoughts.

  9. Well love that we are getting another one of these. Gives me something to listen to on the way to work for an entire week. Characters to me are a lot harder to compare cause how to you compare a TV character and a movie character but to your credit you had made it work.

I’ll be on the side of not including Muppets. Muppets are great but not animated.

    1. Don’t know where I quite stand on the Great Muppet debate. All have well known animated forms to be fair not even including animated cartoons like Muppet babies. Fraggle Rock had both an animated and live action version so I would include them if I was making the list so I see the argument for having Elmo and others.

  10. After MGM I most familiar with Droopy being in Tom and Jerry Kids, didn’t know HB produced some of Droopy’s later shorts.

  12. Well I am glad you didn’t include superheroes on this list. I hate when I see a list of best animated characters and Batman and Wolverine are on there. It is not really a fair comparison. I will have to throw some love Snake Eyes way. Let’s also not forget there were more animated GI Joe cartoons than the 80’s version.

    1. Even though I’m not on this countdown as far as the podcast releases. I can tell you from behind the scenes… that when we looked at having Characters being able to be chosen…. we said that each character represents EVERYTHING that character has ever done. So when they are talking about Snake Eyes they do mean every version of him. However the 80s version for most but not all geeks is the sunbow Joe series.

    2. We debated a long while about the superheroes but mostly came down to the fact their would deserve their own list and I’m certain that will happen sooner rather than later.

  13. So I’m calling it now:

    1. Bugs Bunny
    2. Mickey Mouse
    3. Homer Simpson
    4. Optimus Prime
    5. Fred Flintstone

the only one I am not sure on is Fred Flintstone.

    1. If you are doing a top list of animated characters and Genie is not on that list something is wrong.

      1. Greatest action movie character of the 80’s? That doesn’t deserve a Top 10?

    2. Can all be honest for a second. Mickey Mouse is a logo, not a character. I get it. He has historical influence but name anything significant he has been in post the 1960’s?

    2. Has Snake Eyes or any GI Joe changed all that much though in those updated animated cartoons. GI Joe characters are quirky and fun I grant you. None are all that deep. Come one nearly all their character traits can be summed up by their name or duties.

      1. Compared to the 80’s versions? Yes. Give them a watch and you’ll see a much different GI Joe Team
