  1. Okay, before I even go anywhere else, let’s talk “The Lion King”….

SCAR-First of all, I did say that it was the “Top of the Second Tier”, (Well, before that, “Thumbelina” was Don Bluth, it wasn’t Disney, and yeah, that’s the worst animated movie ever made; that was awful, totally agree there). but I checked my list of Walt Disney animated films, and did a rerank, and I did disqualify Pixar and other outside group Disney teamed with, and I ranked “The Lion King” 9th. I have in alphabetical order, “Beauty and the Beast”, “Cinderella”, “Fantasia”, “Frozen”, “The Little Mermaid”, “Lady and the Tramp” “Pinocchio” and “Wreck-It Ralph” as being better Disney films; I have “The Lion King”, “Snow White…”, “Bambi,” like 9, 10, 11, from there I think it gets a lot more subjective ’cause I think a lot of the rest is in the mediocre-to-good range, but “The Lion King” I stand by it, I don’t rank it as great, I rank it as very good, very very good, but I don’t think it’s comparable to most of the ones I ranked above it. I still love it a lot, but I certainly don’t understand how four slots went to this movie! Okay, I had Simba, on my ballot, and Scar, would’ve probably been my second choice if I had to pick one. Mufasa, I agree, not in the film enough, eh, Timon & Pumbaa, eh, I’m not as keen on putting the comic relief in a Top 100, honestly, um, and I think less of them in particular the further away I get from the movie, honestly. I mean, they are just the comic relief, they’re not much else, to them, that’s why I didn’t seriously consider them. The only Disney villain I ranked on my ballot was Cruella De Vil, so I’m presuming she’s not on the list at this point, but Scar, is kinda interesting, but I think ultimately hollow as a villain. Actually, I think one of the reasons he’s bumped up is that he’s one of the more interesting male villains in Disney, which is itself kinda strange, but yeah, way too many from “The Lion King”. I don’t get it. I don’t get him higher than Simba, I certainly don’t get him this high. I don’t think the villains, in general were nearly as interesting, at least Disney villains, are interesting as people thought.

MEGATRON-Well, I was about to write that the best ’80s series villain was Dr. Claw, but then Inspector Gadget showed up on the ballot. I don’t get it,- honestly, like it’s weird, all the series that I thought was such crap that they were unwatchable, turns out, they’re the ones everybody keeps remaking and rebooting, which is annoying to me, and “Transformers” is no exception. Maybe he’s more interesting in other versions, but I don’t get it.

BENDER-Okay, um, I’m glad that there’s some “Family Guy” and other Primetime cartoons on here, but I’m gonna be brutally honest here, I don’t think any “Futurama” character is interesting enough for this poll. Bender, is by far the closest one that almost made my ballot, but I don’t think any of characters are actually that interesting. I mean, they seem like they should be, but Leela is a bit of foil, but she doesn’t really do that much, Fry’s dim, and I guess he’s going through the adventure, the old professor is mostly exposition when you really think about it. The rest you can or leave and forget they’re there. Even Zoiberg is basically an angry Eeyore. (Shrugs) I love the show, but the more I thought about it, the less interesting the characters got. I know Leela and Fry, kinda started dating by the end of the series, or one of the later seasons, honestly in hindsight it felt like when Tony and Angela from “Who’s the Boss?” started dating more than anything else, like, “We’ve been on forever, they should get together now!” I’m glad to see two “Family Guy” characters for instance, and I’m glad it is Bender, of all the “Futurama” characters but, I ignored them.

    HE-MAN-Go to “Megatron” response.

INSPECTOR GADGET-Okay, I love “Inspector Gadget”, although I didn’t have him on my ballot. Now, I was a classic TV kid growing up, so I loved watching “Inspector Gadget” knowing how close to “Get Smart” it actually was. I know, it’s more Clouseau than Maxwell, but I like it’s not his partner 99, it’s his niece Penny, adds up to a 100? Get it? Or how, the dog is Brain and does all the actual work. I found those in-jokes funny, but eh, yeah, I’m a bit surprised he ranked so high.

BETTY BOOP-I’m a bit surprised Betty Boop is so high honestly, I had her much lower, partly ’cause she doesn’t hold up much now, although a lot of that was the Hays Code being enforced; she’s a much more adult characters before then actually. But I’m glad Fleischer showed up, I’m hoping there’s one more Fleischer character on the list, pretty high. There better be.

SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS-I didn’t include him, I don’t hate him though, I think he’s overrated, although admittedly, my time was before they came around, so they’re a bit outside my radar, but I don’t mind them.

DARIA-I had Daria, really high, like Top 25, and I didn’t have Beavis and Butt-Head, at all on the ballot. I do like “Beavis and Butt-Head” but there were other characters like them before, maybe not animation, but there’s Cheech and Chong types, and that’s where to me Daria is seriously underrated. There aren’t that many characters pre-Daria’s in anything that’s like her. That character, you said it was nineties, I think it was ahead of it’s time. That sardonic, unimpressed anti-teenager, that character that rich, we hadn’t seen done before and now, I can think of a lot of characters, Aubrey Plaza’s entire career offhand, that are basically offshoots of Daria. A few of these characters basically invented the archetype and Daria’s one of them. Seriously underrated.

JACK SKELLINGTON-Okay, I’m gonna get a lot of shit from this post, eh, “The Nightmare Before Christmas” sucks! I don’t know why people like this thing. Fine the animation is cool, the look is awesome, the movie is a 25 minutes short that was stretch to 70 minutes, and I think the music’s overrated too. I’d scratch Skellington right off the list. I mean, it’s kind of a funny joke, he’s the Halloween guy who discovers Christmas, wants to steal fine, I don’t think there’s much else to him nor is he a fun character.

CRUELLA DE VIL-Holy Crap, Cruella De Vil did make the list! I had written that possibility off, kudos! Little high, but she’s the one Disney villain that I held out for so totally awesome that she made it.

BUZZ LIGHTYEAR-I kept Buzz off the list. I’m in agreement, after the first film, he kinda falls into the background, and I hope Woody in the Top 25.

IRON GIANT-Oh man, uh, I think it’s overrated. And Vin Diesel’s best performance was “Find Me Guilty”. It’s an okay movie, but I was debating whether or not he was the interesting character from the movie, but if he wasn’t then who was?

SNOOPY-Too low, but glad to see “Peanuts” on here. I suspect one other will show up, but we’ll see.

BALOO-Okay, I liked “Tale Spin” but was it actually that good? ‘Cause I think “The Jungle Book” is way on the 3rd or 4th tier of Disney. I haven’t seen the new film yet though, I’ll watch it soon hopefully, but I’ve never found much appeal of the movie, outside of the music, which is quite good. But the movie, boring as Hell, even as a kid.

DARKWING DUCK-Wow! Okay, I had him on the bottom on the list, ’cause he somewhat unique in the Disney universe, being both a superhero and a parody of a superhero as well, which I also thought should be represented. Actually, I almost him on my ballot with Wordgirl, who I think is actually the best animated superhero satire series. (Sorry, never thought much of “The Tick”, any version) but Darkwing is a better character and yeah, I’m glad he showed up.

GOKU-People watch “Dragonball Z”!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!!? WHY!?!?!?! Sorry, don’t get this; I thought it was too dumb to exist as a kid, and now I’m more confused to find out it’s still around. They don’t reboot, “Science Court” but they bring back “Dragonball Z”, what the…-?! (Shrugs)

HUCKLEBERRY HOUND-Of the television era of Hanna-Barbera, the only one I really thought was possibly deserving of the list was Topcat to be honest, although Huckleberry Hound’s pretty good, Oh, I did have Judy Jetson on my ballot, ’cause, she’s one of the few original teenage girl characters of television, not just animation, which in of itself is weird, but I don’t think they hold up as well as you guys think they do. It’s not just an era thing either, I grew up with most of them too, and I find them ultimately forgettable most of them. Huckleberry Hound, definitely isn’t however, so I’m glad he’s up there.

I hope there’s a “The Simpsons” character in the Top 25, and at least, a “South Park” character; I’m amazed that you’ve gone so many without one. Uh, there’s one duo I hope is up high, that I’m worried missed the countdown entirely. One’s a moose, one’s a squirrel, if that’s a hint or not, other than that, I think we’re basically gonna get a good amount of showcase characters now. I hope lot of Looney Tunes and Disney, and a few more adult series characters. If Kermit’s on there, I’m in agreement, I don’t like the Muppets being on there, but very interested in who just missed this list. Very surprised Tommy Pickles ranked so high, I’m debating whether or not Anjelica will make it. Also, I really hope Riley from “Inside Out” shows up; I mean, if two of her emotions made the list, than, I would hope her name’s gonna come soon. We’ve got 2/5 of her, so… I suspect the next top 25 will be the most predictable, but I’ve been wrong. I do think there’s one anime character left, a movie anime character that I hope broke the Top 25. She was my highest-ranked female character so, I know I’m pushing for her, but we’ll see.

Oh, and glad you came around on Jessica Rabbit, thanks for that. :)

  3. What’s with all the hate for Inspector Gadget. Yea he is a bumbling idiot. That’s the point! It’s a comedy show. It’s not very funny if he is a great detective that always uses his gadgets the right way.

  4. So am I the only one shocked someone like Speed Racer has not made the list yet? I love Goku but when it comes to important anime characters I go good old Speed.

    1. I actually do like “Speed Racer” myself, and he was the only anime TV character that I even really considered. (I’m not anti-Anime, I just don’t know enough about most of the modern series to consider them, and unfortunately the ones I do know about I thought were awful, so that’s a weird catch-22 for me.) but I ended up leaving Speed Racer off. I’m actually surprised there’s no, character from the more adult anime series yet. Nothing from “Fullmetal Alchemist” or “Cowboy Bebop” or something of that nature? I didn’t know those or other shows enough to consider them, but I’m amazed he childish ones that turned me off of anime are the ones that keep showing up. So, I don’t think I’m surprised, I didn’t think Speed Racer was gonna make it. Too early, and I know people of my generation missed him and had to seek him out if they were interested, so…. (Shrugs)

  5. What’s with all the hate for Inspector Gadget. Yea he is a bumbling idiot. That’s the point! It’s a comedy show. It’s not very funny if he is a great detective that always uses his gadgets the right way.

    1. Have you watched that show recently? It’s pretty bad. And the Netflix cartoon is even worse. Klaw has a cool voice but no one on that show deserves to be on a best character list.

    2. I’m the biggest “Inspector Gadget” fan I know, and I didn’t even include him. Not ’cause I think he’s not a bad character, I mean, he’s a kiddie version of Inspector Clouseau, that’s how you got to think about him, and I’ already a huge “Get Smart” fan, so he’s in my wheelhouse to begin with. That said, I just didn’t think he was Top 100 worthy. The show isn’t consistent on repeats, I don’t think it’s awful, there’s still some really great episodes, but yeah, I think putting him on the list is a stretch, much less as high as he made it.

  6. So am I the only one shocked someone like Speed Racer has not made the list yet? I love Goku but when it comes to important anime characters I go good old Speed.

    1. I actually do like “Speed Racer” myself, and he was the only anime TV character that I even really considered. 2. A lot of that probably has to do with time. When was the last time Speed Racer was relevant? Where Dragon Ball Z is still talked about today.

  7. I have been loving the countdown so far. This might be my favorite out of all of them because of the unexpected nature. Also Sketch and DJ are a lot of fun to listen to. Will need to catch their podcasts for sure.

    1. Thanks for the kind comments! Good to hear that people are enjoying this iteration of our countdowns!!

    2. I second this. Loved DJ on the TV last year and glad you brought him back again. How come Mike and Steve are MIA? Surprised they haven’t showed up at all.

      1. Mainly scheduling conflicts. Mike actually wasn’t even able to submit a list for the countdown this time.

      2. Mr. Brad Lincoln…I appreciate the love…maybe now that O.Solo sees that some out there find me tolerable…he’ll allow me to produce my one man show for the Geekcast Radio Network…Hamlet…as read by Mickey Mouse. It’s some risque stuff, believe me. However, I think the audience is there…oh yes Brad Lincoln…you wrought this.

          1. Keys to the castle?!? Well Killer Mike just handed me keys to the castle. Time for one of those 80s “coming of age” Film cliches in which the irresponsible teen has a house party while their parents are away and wreck the house…I’M JUDGE REINHOLD!!!!

      3. IF you listen to Altered Geek… Steve started a new job and is dealing with school plus family life.

I’m producing 30 + podcast episodes for when I’m on my California Christmas Adventure … I leave in 2 days from the time of me writing this. Episodes for POGS, POWCA, and Toon Beyond!

Steve and I have a HUGE countdown coming next year…. so that’s something to look forward to.

        1. I listen to AG but I’m a few weeks behind. Looking forward to the countdown next year.

    3. FilmForFun…you are a great American…if you are American, that is…I’m not sure…will just say I mean it in terms of thanking you for the compliment.

  8. First. Yay that Bender was there. I hope, I HOPE that he is not the only Furturama character. Fry deserves to be on this list. His journey has a character through that series was epic.

With all the 90’s love why isn’t there more Simpsons? No love for Comic Book Guy?

    1. Comic Book Guy is great but wouldn’t make my top 20 of favorite Simpson characters to be honest.

  9. I have been loving the countdown so far. This might be my favorite out of all of them because of the unexpected nature. Also Sketch and DJ are a lot of fun to listen to. Will need to catch their podcasts for sure.

  10. African Sniper? Wow, that was wrong and hilarious at the same time.

Kind of shocking Megatron is not higher. Knowing the love for Transformers.

It appears a lot of characters are getting votes based on the movie and not the actual character. I love Iron Giant but as a character Iron Giant is way too high.

    1. An interesting point that I will make sure to bring up in the wrap-up show! Thanks for the listen and the feedback!!

    2. I was thinking the same thing. Lion King is the best example of this. Also it seems whatever show people like what ever the main character is that person gets votes instead of the better side characters.

      1. I can’t speak for everybody but that definitely was not the case for me!

    3. Yea that was a random comment. No idea where it came from. Felt right at the time though.

  13. I could never stand Daria. The sound of her voice was like fingernails on a chalk board for me. And I know too many girls that tried to be her that I found so annoying.

My all time favorite Disney villain has always been Scar so I am happy he is the highest ranking Lion King character. Assuming no one else gets voted in.

  15. So a lot of 80’s series appear to be left out in the cold. No love for Thundercats at all? Danger Mouse gets no love? Not one Jetson? No Smurfs? What the smurf is that. I doubt anyone will show up in the top 25.

Johnny Quest should be on here someone. Multiple great shows including the one in the early 2000’s.

Despite those quibbles being enjoying the countdown so far.

    1. Yea, when you start trying to narrow it down to 100 it gets pretty challenging. So many characters/shows/franchises just can’t be represented in such a limited pool of such a vast array of possible characters!

    2. I got so much love for Danger Mouse. Honorable mention for sure. I got Penfold For Life tattooed on my bicep. Okay…I’m sorry. That’s a lie…it’s on my lower back…more like a tramp stamp.

    3. Brad, those are definitely good characters. I like them all. I was wondering about The Smurfs, too, but I don’t know one of them that particularly stands out. I think of them more as the collective. The same for ThunderCats. I love that series. And I guess I would pick Lion-O, but I think the show and the collective of characters is stronger than any one character on the show. There are just so many characters from which to choose. I would like to see Danger Mouse on the list, as I do think he is worthy of being on the top 100, but probably not in the top 50.

    4. I like Thundercats and Smurfs as TV shows but none of the characters are all that great for me. I only ranked a couple of the 80’s action cartoon characters.

Good point on Johnny Quest he and his show is something would should have brought up.

  17. I don’t understand the dislike for Spongebob. Are you basing your dislike on the earlier or later episodes? Several of the best episodes are in the first five seasons, which were before the movie premiered. Check out Sailor Mouth, Hall Monitor, Pizza Delivery or some of those early episodes, which are zany episodes that borrow from some other great shows. Much of the crew worked on other classic Nick shows like Rocko’s Modern Life. Sure, like many shows, it has been on way too long and they have exhausted their best ideas, but in the beginning, Spongebob was this care-free lovable character with child-like zeal for grilling burgers, learning karate, fishing and having fun. And his voice early on was more reflective of that personality. Now his voice is somewhat annoying and more high-pitched. I do not know why they changed it. I have never heard a reason as to why. Spongebob is a very iconic character and has had amazing longevity. I expect him to be a staple for many years to come, even long after his TV series has ended.

    1. Personally I just find the humor of Sponge Bob grading. I don’t have any hate for the show (I did rank Sponge Bob high on my list) but every time I’ve attempted to watch it It didn’t work for me. I wouldn’t call it a quality thing, moreso a taste of humor. It’s well written and inventive, just not for me.
