  1. I had Mickey as my #1, and here’s why.

Without Mickey Mouse, Disney, the most powerful entertainment corporation in the history of the world, DOES NOT EXIST.

Without Bugs Bunny, Warner Brothers almost certainly does still exist.

But yeah, Mickey #1 and Bugs #2. Not sure why anyone ranked either of them outside of their top 10!

    1. Would you say he is a great character though? Movies may not exist if something like Birth of a Nation did explode onto the scene as it did, so is that the greatest movie of all time? You could argue Snow White did more to launch Disney into an empire so should those characters be ranked highly? Don’t get me wrong Mickey should be in the top 10. But I don’t see him as a lock for number 1 or 2 as most do.

      1. I’d argue he’d has to be top 5. It is different than say a movie like Birth of a Nation because that movie is pretty much out of the zeitgeist outside of film lovers where Mickey Mouse is still a cultural icon 100 years later. So yes that does deserve top 5 recognition.

      2. Mickey is SO iconic, though. He’s in more places than any other character on the list. And as for being a great character, actually yes, I see him as a great character. Look what they did with him in Kingdom Hearts, and yet it was still believable. Bugs is more entertaining but I actually think Mickey is more multi-faceted, you can do more with Mickey from a dramatic standpoint than you can do with Bugs. Mickey can be funny AND serious.

I gave a lot of weight to a character’s impact outside of their medium. That’s why I had Mickey #1, it’s why I had Elsa ranked so high, or Betty Boop, or Sailor Moon, or Doraemon (who was completely snubbed).

        1. I agree with @Ry here. Mickey is another level with it comes to famous cartoon characters.

      3. I’m not sure how we got onto “Birth of a Nation”, comparisons, but I could just easily argue that “Steamboat Willie”, the animated short that debuted Mickey Mouse started the Disney, and it’s not like that was just the first like “Snow White…” was the first film, (Although, Mickey is definitely more of a character than Snow White, which is why I’m fine not including her on the list) but that was also on of the first sound cartoons and had characters making noise, and also set the tone for what would be considered the classic Disney style of humor and established an iconic character that, yeah, okay wouldn’t be my first choice to build an empire around, but show’s what I know. That said, I had Bugs one, ’cause, well, yeah, just because something does it great first, doesn’t always mean best.

  2. Sad to see the countdown come to an end. These are always fun. Popeye coming in the Top 10 was the surprise of the countdown. That came out of no where.

Some of my personal favorite Loonie Tunes did not make the cut down Foghorn Leghorn and Elmer Fudd. Also not a lot of representation of current cartoons like Rick and Morty, and really anything Adult Swim or Cartnoon Network post early 2000’s.

  5. Hmm, yeah, I question those who shafted Bugs a bit, I know Mickey’s iconic, but just because he’s the face of the franchise, doesn’t mean the jester shouldn’t beat him out. But, yeah, I had Bugs #1 and Mickey Mouse #2, I could say iconography Mickey’s the top, but character Bugs is the top, but at that point, I just ranked Bugs personally, ’cause I prefer him more and that was the only difference to me. Elsewise though…

Meatwad: Wait who the hell is… (Google, Meatwad… “Aqua Teen Hunger…-) Oh, for God’s sake, no! NO! NO! ’90s Nostalgia reigns, but a “ATHF” character, beat out everyone from “King of the Hill”!? (Sigh) You see, that’s the problem, it’s not the ’90s or ’80s nostalgia that’s the inherent problem, it’s what from ’90s and/or the ’80s that’s remembered fondly, and that’s not one I would’ve remember or even considered.

REN & STIMPY: Besides that, with all the surreal and gross out humor stuff, Ren & Stimpy did it first and best usually. I think they’re high, but I ranked them I can let that go.

BELLE: I had Belle Top Ten, and yes, she should be ranked just because she reads! (Seriously, how many characters in general, much less animated do you ever see actually read a book) but here’s why she’s more interesting and compelling than any other Disney Princess, she is the most complex. She internally interesting, even before, she’s sacrificing herself to the Beast, who’s-, and yes, I think both characters should’ve made the list, got to go through this transition into a character who can love this monster and vice-versa. She’s also an outsider remember, she’s Beauty, but she’s also the weirdo in her town, that’s why Gaston’s advances don’t work. She doesn’t need to fall in love, and yet, that’s what makes her journey of realizing that she is, interesting. I think she’s way too low, and much more interesting than Mulan, who’s just doing it to save her father and is essentially just a soldier, or Ariel, who I did rank high, but is basically an over-her-head teenage fangirl. Belle has the best and most complex inner journey.

TOM & JERRY-I had them third, btw, cartoon characters with the most Oscars and nomination, they have seven! Way more than Mickey and Bugs combined. (Disney won for a lot of their “Silly Symphonies” not for like Mickey and Donald. Daffy Duck, has never been nominated by the way) And yes, in terms of importance and iconography, I had them 3rd. And yes, they’re simple, but it’s brilliant comedic violence at it’s best. It’s influence and iconic status seriously got underplayed here, and they should’ve been the highest-ranked Hanna-Barbera characters.

SCOOBY-DOO-Okay a couple things, one Yogi Bear’s too high, you guys have almost convinced me that he belongs on the list, almost, but still too high, 2nd, when I was forming this list, I paired Scooby with Shaggy, myself, in consideration, but I didn’t rank them on my ballot together, and I don’t think Scooby-Doo deserves to be on here separately, at all much less this high. When I first saw Scooby-Doo, I caught an episode when I was four years old I think, and I remember it very distinctly, it was on TBS, I was waiting for pro wrestling I believe to air and Scooby Doo was on before it, and I remember thinking, “I’m too smart for this show.” 4-years-old, I thought that. So, I’ve grown up very much despising Scooby for that, and I’ve come around a little on that, but-, yeah, this is one instance, where just because it’s popular and iconic and still around means it’s any good or ever was and I certainly don’t agree with it being ranked as the Top Dog.

OPTIMUS PRIME-Probably the second time I realized I was too smart for something on TV was “Transformers”, so no, I don’t get this either.

FRED FLINTSTONE-Okay, I did have Fred and Barney Rubble also on my list, but nowhere near this high, and I don’t think he belong Top Ten. I would at minimum switch him with Rocky & Bullwinkle (And btw, only R&B? No, Boris & Natasha, no Mr. Peabody & Sherman, no Dudley Do-Right?) and here’s why, Fred, might be influential in terms of animation, as a television historian/aficionado/bullshitter/etc. whatever, to me, he’s too redundant of Ralph Kramden. This is just “The Honeymooners” in the stone age and not much more. I mean, sure it’s a primetime show, and it’s a sitcom structure which was unique, but it’s a primetime sitcom that’s aiming for the kids, while at about the same time, “R&B” were a kids show on daytime, but it aimed for the adults, and was more unique, surreal, subversive, even it’s Variety-show like structure is constantly undermined, it’s also like “Laugh-In” more than anything else of it’s time, and without them, there might not be “The Flintstones” much less, everything else on the Primetime television landscape that came after. So, i really question Fred Flintstone this high.

KERMIT THE FROG-Well, I’m glad he kept Meatwad off the list, so, okay, but yeah, I don’t think of Kermit either as an animated character or even as a primarily animated character. I mean, I love “Muppet Babies” and a couple obscure one-offs, but that’s not enough. He’s iconic, I love Kermit, I love the Muppets, but where does the line stop here? It’s not a Kids character list or a Puppet list, it’s an animated character list. I mean, eh, there was those six episodes of that animated “Fraggle Rock” series, should Gogo Fraggle be eligible? I mean, if it was Skeeter, who actually did start off and is primarily an animated character then maybe, although why anybody would rank her…? But I really don’t get putting him on the list.

WAKKO, YAKKO & DOT WARNER-They’re way too high, so are Pinky & the Brain, but the Warners defense, I did have them Top 25. Now, I hated them originally, because of, too many people when I young, claiming, that they were better than the Looney Tunes, which, no, not overall, they’re not. That said, having time to readjust, they’re really good and it is cool that they’re a throwback to older animated characters; that’s a great conceit, but more than that, they’re the animated re-working of the Marx Brothers, which we hadn’t seen in animation up ’til then. And that level of zaniness meets anarchy, I think they deserve a spot, but yeah, way too high, but bottom half of the Top 25, I would’ve been okay with.

HOMER SIMPSON-I had six Simpsons character on my ballot, admittedly Bart & Homer were at the top, I wish Lisa at least would’ve made it (Who I think is actually the most interesting character on the show), but I think I can argue for maybe nine or ten that should’ve.

ERIC CARTMAN-Again, I has five from “South Park” on my list, Cartman I did have the highest-ranked, but yeah, not enough. I can see how, differentiating between Kyle and Stan would be hard, but Mr. Garrison, all the crap he’s done, Randy Marsh, him, Sheila Broflowski, Chef, hell, I think Satan has a good argument.

CHARLIE BROWN-I also had six “Peanuts” characters on my ballot, only two made it (Both of them too low btw)? No Linus, no Woodstock, no LUCY!!!??? (Disappointed sigh)

GENIE-Okay, I had him like bottom Top 100, but at the top of it, and I think he is a great character. That said, I don’t get him this high at all. He is, the only interesting thing about “Aladdin”, sorry, I don’t get why Aladdin made the list at all. Take Genie out of that movie, it becomes boring. That’s why he belongs on the list, he saves a weaker Disney film. That said, you guys kinda said it, it was Robin Williams and then they animated him. That alone is worthy of the list, but essentially, now we have 3 muppets, 96 animated characters and Robin William on this list. I get it, but I really have a hard time putting him this high. Not ahead of Daffy or Popeye (And I’m happy to see Popeye that high, and he does hold up more than you’d think; I’ve watched some old Popeye’s lately, they’re still really good) More than these others, more than any other Disney movie character? I don’t get that.

AND HERE’S MY TOP TEN THAT MISSED THE LIST:
#6: SAN aka PRINCESS MONONOKE-Okay, I kinda get this, Ashitaka is really the hero character, and I had him on my ballot too and really high, but I think I would argue she’s more interesting and mysterious, as well as her background and inner conflicts should’ve put her on the list. (Plus, she’s more iconic)
#17: WALLACE & GROMIT- I don’t get how Gromit makes the list but separate from Wallace who doesn’t show up? Are there a bunch of Gromit cartoons that I’m not aware of, ’cause they’re always together; I don’t get how they weren’t paired up.
#20: RILEY ANDERSON-Seriously, Joy and Sadness make the list, but not the little girl who’s going through all these emotions? I call that a huge screw-up.
#22: CHIHIRO OGINO-No love for “Spirited Away”, really? I’d argue the best version of an “Alice in Wonderland”-type story ever filmed, and a main character that’s way more interesting than any other Alice character.
#28: BRIAN GRIFFIN-I had four “Family Guy” characters on my ballot, I also had Quagmire later on down the list, but yeah, this is the best use of Seth MacFarlane’s Gary Larson influence, he’s ever done. And talk about a complex character a dog who’s smart and talks and has no place in society so he drinks and philanders his way through life. Really, Scooby-Doo over Brian Griffin?
    33. PINOCCHIO-Really, no “Pinocchio”? Okay, here’s your ’90s Nostalgia bias, older Disney movie character, almost nothing. “Pinocchio” was my highest-ranked in that group, and I think it’s Walt’s best movie.
    36. SYLVESTER THE CAT & TWEETY BIRD-Tweety makes it but not Sylvester? Okay, I know they did do some good cartoons, separately, but primarily, they should’ve been a pair to me. And their cartoons were wonderfully violent offscreen, sometimes. They were as good as Tom & Jerry at their best.
    38. LOUISE BELCHER-Do this list five years later, I bet “Bob’s Burgers” gets a couple characters on here.
    40. SEITA & SETSUKO YOKOHAMA-“Grave of the Fireflies” is the saddest animated movie of all-time. Even if I wanted to leave them off, for character reason, and I’ve heard good arguments against them, if you’ve seen the movie,… I found it hard to keep them off the list, maybe others didn’t, but if you’ve seen it, then you probably understand why they’re on here.
    41. HANK HILL-I bet there’s gonna be a lot of regret on this one not making it.

HONORABLE MENTION: I didn’t put ELMER FUDD on my list and I bet others forgot him too until it was too late. He’s the one big one I think I forgot.

Well, that’s my post-mortem, looking forward to your guys’!

    1. 100% Agree that someone from King of the Hill should have made it. Either Bobby or Hank for sure. Best father/son pairing in animation period in my mind.

      1. Bobby Hill, just missed my list personally, I regretted that one, ’cause I had him, like 103 or something close to that. I actually did include Bill on my ballot, on the low end, but he seemed to do quite a bit and had a lot of interesting character arcs and stories, most of which Hank usually got wrangled up into. I doubt he got too many votes, but yeah. I know it’s easy to forget about “King of the Hill” in that swirl of other great Primetime animated series out now, but it really shouldn’t.

      2. I just disagree with the King of the Hill love. TO me personally, that show didn’t do anything to separate itself from Simpsons/Family Guy etc etc. I just never could see the appeal to it at all

        1. King of the HIll was nothing like Simpsons or Family Guy. It was way more toned down and true to life. You could take those exact scripts and do it live action with little to no changes. That could not happen with those shows. It also had continuity were changes would happen show to show and season to season unlike other animated shows that just return things back to normal each week.

          1. Never said it was like those shows in content/plot/story etc. I was saying LIKE other prime time animated shows. Just to clarify. Just not a show for me. I’ve seen numerous episodes and never understood the like for it. I never laugh, I never think the writing is clever, never feel entertained in any way. Sorry guys

        2. How could it not do anything to separate itself? It was nothing like those shows whatsoever.

        3. Yeah, I-, I understand kinda forgetting it exists, next to those more, for-lack-of-a-better-term, animated, animated series, but yeah, in hindsight, that’s what I find great about it. And because it refuses to be anything more simply than it is, it actually makes it stand out, and the real shame of it, not being on this list anywhere, is that, it allowed them to create really outstanding characters by doing this. By making these, in other terms, very realistic and believable characters that, KingofKongs is right, this could be live-action, and hypothetically worked, but I appreciate that. And it’s not like, they couldn’t do something else, Mike Judge, created “Beavis and Butt-Head”, and now, “Silicon Valley” and Greg Daniels adapted “The Office” to America, they could’ve turned that show into something more Simpsons-like and it would’ve worked, but yeah, I’m glad they didn’t.

        4. King of the Hill to me was a show that never knew if it wanted to be dramatic or funny and ended up being neither of both

  7. Sad to see the countdown end. Will you guys being doing another one next year? If so have you announced what it will be? What about Top 100 Movies or Top 100 Toys. Both of those would be awesome.

  8. I am a huge Aladdin fan but Genie is way too high. It’s just Robin Williams doing Robin Williams which is great fun but not an amazing character. Top 50, Top 25. Sure. Top 5. No way.

  11. With all the 90’s love no one from Tiny Tunes or Gargoyles. If any show should have characters on this lists from the 90’s Disney Afternoon slate it is Gargoyles. That show was on another level and those characters were super deep for a kids show.

    1. I would have loved to see some love for gargoyles!! Super cool show and definitely deep for a cartoon. Complicated relationships too!!

  13. I enjoyed the countdown. Overall, it was a good list with many of the picks you would expect to see. I do not understand how some lists could exclude such iconic cartoon characters though. To speak to Homer, I do feel he should be above the Genie. Yes, Genie is great, but Homer has had more longevity that has allowed him to have more facets to his character. The Genie in Return of Jafar was still decent (voiced by Homer’s voice actor), but it was good to see Robin return for the third Aladdin installment. And the top two were to be expected, it was just a question of the order. I do like Bugs Bunny a lot more than Mickey. But I understand that Mickey is very iconic and important. I did enjoy the countdown, but the swearing by HardCandiMandi really wore on me at times. I can tolerate swearing, but it just seemed unnecessary and excessive. The podcast became less enjoyable at times because of that. Maybe in future podcasts that can be toned down so that listeners can enjoy conversations that focus on making their points without being so terse.

    1. In our show we don’t have any censorship and no limits were placed on the record. I find it hard to believe it was so frequent it would have been distracting since there were 5 ppl speaking

      1. It’s not that I have a problem with cursing. The problem is that it was just excessive from HardCandiMandi. You have a right to string in as many F bombs as you want, and that’s fine, but you should know that it is grating to some. It just wasn’t necessary. By the time you got the top 10 I was like, “Damn. Cut that fucking shit out already.”

    2. While I respect @timsilvers:disqus opinion, he doesn’t speak for everyone. I have no issue with cursing whatsoever. And the throwdown between DJ and @hardcandimandi:disqus over Ariel vs Mulan was hilarious.

      1. Don’t you mean the utter domination by DJ over HardCandiMandi in the Ariel v Mulan argument?! You know I’m right…she knows I’m right…THE WORLD KNOW I’M RIGHT. And since HCM can kick my butt in literally everything else…I’m due a victory against her in the one little thing.

        1. You know i gotta rep my free loving fellow red head!! you are still my boy DJ and i do love Mulan! Finally got @OptimusSolo to watch it this year! But..hair cut vs species swap is no contest bruh! Can’t wait for our next versus battle!

  14. I wanted to chime in on the inclusion of Muppets and I think it makes a lot of sense to be honest. My nieces and nephews and tons of Sesame Street and Muppet DVDs and games and most of them are animated. Kermit being #1 was the right call too. He is easily the greatest muppet.

  17. What a mess, you need to make it clear why charactors are being nominated. Half are voting for iconic characters, others for thier favourite. I thought the brief was to nominate YOUR 100 favourite characters. Saying Betty boop should be nominated because she’s iconic is crap. Going off the average age of the crew there of course late 80’sans 90’s cartoons are going to be featured heavily. It’s when we grew up. The only host that seemed to get it right was the mandi

    1. I think you missed a lot of the behind the scenes in how this was put together. Thanks for your comments though.

      1. Was commenting on what I heard. When different hosts have voted for charactors for different reasons it makes me scratch my head when looking at the final list of 100
