  1. J.R. EWING…… is EASILY TOP 10 MATERIAL!!! He was the VILLAIN YOU LOVED TO HATE, and then LOVE again!!! All throughout the original Dallas, and even moreso on the 2012 sequel series.

YOU DAMN YOUNG WHIPPERSNAPPERS don’t know what you are talking about. Thank GOD DJ was on the record!!! J.R. Ewing could outwit any villain… in the most underhanded deceitful way, and still smile the whole time!

    1. I completely concur, J.R. Ewing is way, too low. He was on my Top Ten, in fact, partially due to a technicality ’cause I had one character who I thought was from TV originally until I did some research, he was in fact my highest-ranked TV character, and, even beyond his own actions, the thought-process behind them, how he sees the world and other people, is what really should’ve put him over-the-top. He’s arguably psychologically, complex character in the history of the medium of TV, he should absolutely have not come off the board this early. His own mother said there wasn’t a single positive trait to him, and she said it to his face; that’s how bad he is. Him being so low, is the biggest crime so far on this list.

        1. Well, I did say, “So Far”, but even still, I have a very difficult time imagining a bigger one than that. I can see some, big, big villains, who could miss the top 100 entirely, that i ranked really high on my ballot, and I would probably still consider J.R. too low on the list being worst than leaving some of those other names off.

    2. J.R. Ewing is like TV’s Gordon Gecko…a despicable business man that for some reason…I rooted for…I don’t know why…maybe it was the hat.

      1. just because he was a human, doesn’t mean he wasn’t the GREATEST TV VILLAIN EVER!!! IF you even watch any of the old dallas you’ll understand. Although I know you won’t!

        1. I love “The Rockford Files” more than “Dallas” as well. J.R. Ewing still should be ranked in the Top Ten for villains.

  2. Just some random thoughts on some of the ones selected.

Ben Linus-I love Michael Emerson, I think “The Practice” with him as a villain myself, ’cause I cannot put up with “Lost” at all, as a show, but I remember him being good, but I’m surprised he made it.

Calvin Candin-I think it was D.J. who said, the real villain was Stephen, and I’m in total agreement. Candie, is a good character, eccentric villain, I’m shocked he’s on the list. I would’ve expected, a different Tarantino character, and now I’m really thinking I should’ve put Stephen on my ballot now.

Ivan Drago-Of all the villainous Russian character…- sure he’s iconic, I love the “Rocky” franchise, not a big “Rocky IV” guy, that’s probably the one I like the least, but I thought Boris & Natasha were the great Russian archetype villains of Cold war literature yeah, Drago, is he a villain? (Shrugs)

Roy Batty-I’ve never thought “Blade Runner” was as great as everyone else seems to, and I also thought that was a movie where the environment and world was more the villain than any chracter.

Iago-I had five Shakespeare characters on my ballot, more than any other author, and Iago was not one of them. So, I’m curious to see how many more will show up.

Commodus-(Sigh) I get the argument, but I still don’t think he belongs on the list. To me, yes his evil deeds are long, but they don’t feel like there’s a purpose to them. It comes off as, he’s just gonna do, whatever’s the most evil thing around, and there’s no real intention or depth behind those actions. I see a hack screenwriter at work, maneuvering him around because the movie needs an evil villain so let’s make him as evil as possible, despite Phoenix’s performance, which-, if he had won the Oscar, despite, my not liking the film, I wouldn’t have complained. I just think, for that kind of villain, and his intentions, I can think of better ones.

Amon Goeth- I did have a Nazi on my ballot, ’cause i think you need one, but I picked a fictitious one, but I did include some characters who were originally real people, I had Vince McMahon on my ballot for instance, or I had Richard III really high, and I think it boils down to, whether the intention is to recreate real actions, or to, take a real person as inspiration and create something entirely different. Richard III’s my go-to example here, but he’s so far removed from the original person, who did some awful things too, but not in the way Shakespeare presents him. Goeth technically is a representation, but I didn’t include him, ’cause I think he was,- the intention is to give off, the scent of who he was himself, as well, so, I guess I’m on the side that he shouldn’t be eligible.

Grendel-I left off both villains from “Beowulf”, but I would’ve picked the other one, if I had a choice. I will defer to Woody Allen’s line, “Don’t take any classes that make you read, “Beowulf”; he’s absolutely right. The only problem is that you have to read it, to know why you don’t have to read it, but…. Yeah, when it comes to literature that far back, I’m more in the “Gilgamesh” camp, and that story, doesn’t have, a really great villain to me, so…

One thought, when it comes actors who played a lot of villains, I wouldn’t be shocked if Glenn Close’s name pops up more than once. Just an educated guess, from my ballot; I know I was shocked at how often she popped up, so….. Also, I’m very worried, for a lot of the list, ’cause there’s no sitcom villains yet. I’m waiting for Louis De Palma, I’m waiting for Frank Burns, I’m waiting for Archie Bunker even, I’m waiting for Eddie Haskell, and I’m worried now about that genre. I thought they would, show up here, if they had the chance. Some I didn’t even vote for like Newman, I thought might show up here to, so…. that’s a genre that I’m very concerned about being unrepresented from here on out. Boris & Natasha, sorta count I guess, but I hope that’s not it.

I don’t know, weird but interesting list so far.

  5. Great episode guys. Happy to see another Top 100 starting again. Honestly thought this was going to be like 90% comic book villains. Surprised none showed up so far. Oh and I hated Beowulf in high school. Worst semester of my high school career.

    1. Oh man I loved reading it in my class. We even took a class trip to see the movie in theaters when it was out.

  7. I was just thinking about FFVIII and how much I prefer Edea as an antagonist to Ultemecia or any other FF villian. In fact, I prefer every antagonist in that game more than Ultemecia, which is a shame because she’s the final boss, but she feels so lacking in an otherwise great game with otherwise great antagonists. She only becomes interesting if you follow fan theories, but as far as in game information she always feels very tacked on and underdeveloped. I honestly can’t think of an antagonist I dislike more, but some of the games I haven’t played in a long time

    1. Really? Top 10 maybe. Number 1? So many better choices, Joker isn’t even the best comic book villain.

        1. Well let me think: Darth Vader, Hannibal Lector, Freddy, Jack Torrance, Norman Bates, Hans Gruber, Lex Luthor, Magneto, Hans Landa, Anton Chigurh, to name a few.

      1. Wow! Top Ten? He didn’t break my Top 50. I wouldn’t have even thought to consider him that high.

  9. I still have a hard time enjoying anything Ralph Fiennes does because of his role in Schindler’s List, because it was that good. So evil in every way. Knowing he was based on a real person made it that more chilling.

  11. Thanks! Yea, I am happy with the diversity thus far. Everyone will have to wait and see if that continues or not!

  12. Wow I must say I’m impressed. Did not expect to see the variety of Shakespere to the WWE. Can’t wait until next episod.

        1. Glad to hear that as I didn’t see the poll to vote on what this Top 100 would be until months after it was over and when I seen that Top 100 wrestlers was one of the choices I was bummed that it didn’t win. I would imagine when you go looking to invite people to submit their own top 100 lists for a wrestling top 100 you might have to expand your invites past the usual pop culture/geek bloggers and podcasters as I imagine that all of them aren’t wrestling fans. Given that I now dabble in blogging about wrestling and have a wrestling podcast I would absolutely be down to contribute when you do this Top 100. I’m actually working on a Top 100 wrestlers for another site as we speak so I have experience in doing this.

As far as this list goes I’m glad Vince made the list as I didn’t really expect anyone from the world of wrestling, but if there is only going to be one person from wrestling it has to be him. I will say though that while the character has done some outright despicable things on tv, Vince the person has probably done more despicable stuff but he is more sneaky about that stuff.

To tell you how sick Vince is as a person he once suggested an incest story line between himself and his daughter Stephanie, but thankfully his son Shane and his son in law Paul “Triple H” Levesque put the kibosh on that before it ever left the drawing board. On tv the most degrading thing his character has ever done was make Trish Stratus strip down to her bra and panties, get on all fours, and bark like a dog.

          1. I have a whole section of friends and podcasters over there —-> that are wrestling fans. Yes we will be reaching out to wrestling fans specifically, as well as the normal ones we do. Thank you for listening, and commenting. MMICS will be back soon! Ryan and I have to talk the second half of the MYC, and then catch up on the PPVs and the events of RAW and SDLive!

PLUS YAY THE SHIELD IS BACK!!!!

  13. One I’m glad you didn’t just have a bunch of different versions of the same character cause you could end up with three different Hannibal Lectors on your list.

For some reason Kevin’s audio was much lower for me than the rest of the people at times. It was awful just something I noticed

    1. When I edited the episode I equalized everyone’s audio. Why listening to it over three different times it was fine. Where was his voice lower? I’m listening to the file now.. Kev sounds fine in the beginning. However I’ll work on it for next ep!

  15. Here’s my breakdown so far:

    Shouldn’t be listed –

    Calvin Candy
    Ivan Drago
    Saruman

    Listed Too Low:
    Frankenstein’s Monster
    JR
    Frank Booth

Shouldn’t Be Listed But I’m Okay with it:

    Starscream

      1. I can agree except I do find Saruman worthy. I might have a few to add to each grouping though!

    1. I basically agree as well, although I’m more iffy on Frank Booth. I don’t mind him being on, but I don’t know. I felt like the only reason to put him on would be to include a David Lynch villain, and if that was the only reason, then I had a hard time, justifying him, to me. I don’t think, him, when I think of “Blue Velvet”, I tend to think of the world, the underworld itself, being the villain, as it’s the antithesis of the more, serene artificial world that the characters start in.To me, that undercuts Frank Booth a bit. Sure, he represents that, but a lot of other little things do in that film as well. That’s why I’m iffy on him being in there, but (Shrugs) eh, overall, I’m okay with that one.

    2. I agree. Not that Calvin Candy, Ivan Drago, and Saruman aren’t good villains, but I feel there are other villains more deserving. Still, it is a diverse 25 so far, and I am enjoying the countdown.

  17. Great to see this is back at it again. Love the idea of a villains lists. Wait to the end to give full thoughts on the list but so far its been fun and unexpected.
