  3. Well, general thoughts, you guys seem shocked by the lack of superhero and horror villains…, I’ll say that I had only one of each on my list, and they haven’t shown up yet, so I’m the opposite, So, I thought there might be less even, but, we’ll see. The genres that are noticeably missing to me, are sitcoms villains, which I consider, seriously underrepresented, also somebody mentioned McMahon as a soap opera character, we had J.R. Ewing, already and still way too low, but you know, eh,…, I’ll just say that, Daytime soaps count too, and if you want more female villains, there’s a big one missing from that genre that I’m doubting she’ll show up, but she be somebody we might consider rethinking about, if my inclination is right and that she isn’t on the list. Also, there’s one area of classic literature that hasn’t come up yet, and it’s full of great villains too, but-eh, fairy tales, have been absent so far. Nothing from Mother Goose or even the Brothers Grimm, for instance…. I’m wondering if those characters might show up soon.

    Other thoughts
BOWSER/KING KOOPA-I didn’t have a video game character, I came close to considering, the one that’s named after a town in California, is you catch my drift there, but-um, I think this is an instance, where people might’ve felt obligated to put something in, just because they wanted the medium represented, ’cause King Koopa,- I mean, he could be anybody. They already have two names for him, that’s how minor he is. I don’t really get why he’s there, or most video game villains. Usually the games aren’t about the villains, they’re just the antagonist the main guy has to defeat so.I think it’s a hard sell to put any of them on here, to me,
at least for most classic video game villains. (Shrugs)

IMMORTAN JOE-He came closer to making my ballot than I thought he would. but I ultimately barely left him off. I am surprised by all the recent character villains though, especially from movies. I just double-checked my ballot, I had one movie villain from ’09, and one from ’07, and I had Walter White, so a TV villain from ’08, and both of those film characters were pretty low, so I’m kinda concerned that there’s so many recently-created movie villains, if for no other reason, than I think it’s a little too soon for some of these.

MONTGOMERY BURNS-Okay, I don’t think Sideshow Bob should’ve made it. Yeah, he’s got a revenge motive, but Burns is evil without a motive, he’s just selfish, greedy, evil. I mean, if Sideshow Bob ended up dead, there’s like, maybe ten suspects; Burns gets shot, and literally every character in Springfield had a motive. I wouldn’t have put Sideshow Bob up there.

MEDUSA-I personally disqualified Medusa for a weird reason, although i wouldn’t have put her on the list anyway, ’cause she’s cursed to be a gorgon, that’s not entirely her fault to me, but I had it a point to not have religious characters, just because. that could be a bit of minefield, so I just wanted to avoid that form of subjectivity,.. and mythology at that time, would’ve been the equivalent of religious texts. So I tried to disqualify, Greek, Roman, Norse, characters just to avoid that.

RICHARD III-Okay, I had him #4 on my ballot, and I’m gonna complain about this one. My highest-ranked Shakespeare villain and he absolutely should’ve been Top Ten, and if you don’t think he’s relevant even within Shakespeare today; you do know he’s Frank Underwood, right? All the way to talking to the audience about what evil he’s about to do, he’s the original character like that and worst than all the rest. He’s the original political Machiavellian rise to power through nefarious crimes and means character.. “Now is the winter of our discontent…” he’s telling us, that he is going to lie, cheat, steal, seduce, murder, manipulate,,,, anything possible to become King, and once he does he’ll trade that precious for a horse he can’t find. Every villain of the political world, owes a debt to Richard III. He is absolutely way too low on this list, and I’d argue he’s more influential a character now more than ever. I would consider calling for a re-vote to put him higher and he would fix the results if you did have one.

JAFAR- First of all, he’s not technically a Disney original, ’cause he does show up in “Arabian Nights”, and he’s the usually the protagonist in those tales, actually, Jafar Al-Bamaki didn’t become a villain, until the movies came around, and the first noted example of that is the 1940 version of “The Thief of Bagdad”. He’s also not in the story of “Aladdin” in the book, that antagonist is just an Evil Magician, so… I guess historically, I could see a small argument for him, but I think this is a stretch. I didn’t seriously consider him. Didn’t cross my mind at all, even when i was thinking Disney villains.

MOBY DICK-I totally disagree with this, Moby Dick shouldn’t be on the list, and I don’t think even at the time, was the whale considered the villain of the piece. It’s always been Captain Ahab as the real villain in my mind, and I’m not sure I’d rank him on evil creatures either. He’s not Jaws, he’s not actively going to kill Captain Ahab, it’s…- yeah, I don’t see the argument for him.

GUSTAVO FRING-I’m only two seasons through “Better Call Saul”, so I’m gonna withhold judgment so far, but, I do wonder if, this is a situation where, because his death is so satisfy that we might be overrating him as a villain, but… (Shrugs) that said, you guys gave a great argument for him. I still would probably put Walter White a little higher, especially since, from a literary perspective I think he’s the more important villain from “Breaking Bad”, but I might sold on the notion that he belongs on the list at least.

  5. Never would have guessed the character I would take the most issue with is a Shakespeare one. Richard the III is a fine character but in the realm of Shakespeare I would not call him top tier at all. So with so many putting him in a top 10 is crazy to me.

  7. Happy to see Sideshow Bob make the cut. Anytime he showed up on The Simpson’s it was one of the best episodes

  9. Zod is not a great character but is great in Superman 2 because of the performance. I don’t know who said it but I agree that I am betting the only superhero or comic characters that show up are the ones that appear in movies or TV shows.

  11. No mention of Bond villains yet? He has had some great ones that deserve to be on here somewhere.

    1. That’s a good point. I had a couple on my list but not sure if we will see any show up at all.

  12. So the idea of having Walter White on this list is iffy to me. When I think of a villain they should be someone I route against not for, and although White does some awful things I wanted to see him accomplish his goals. I would call him more of an antihero than a villain. His methods are wrong but his end goals are morale.

  14. I wonder if any non movie Star Wars villains will make the list. The novels and books have better characters than Maul and he made it.

  15. Wow, looking back at my list I totally spaced at putting any video game characters on there! For sure I would’ve had Bowser, Ganondorf, Sephiroth, Kefka, and Luca Blight on my list, maybe a couple of others. Ah well, from the looks of things it wouldn’t have made much of a difference, though I’m still hoping we see Kefka pop up.

And I definitely think we’re going to see a few more literary characters on there, I know I have some in my top 50 that we haven’t yet seen! I would’ve been surprised NOT to see a whole bunch of literary characters on the list, as they really have been the archetype of the modern day pop culture villains we’re seeing now. I do imagine the comic book villains will start showing up in droves on this week’s show though, but hopefully we see more great literary villains on there too.

    1. I was happy any video game characters made it. Hopefully Gladoos makes it in the top 20.

      1. I doubt it. Most of the villains are very known unless they’re literary pieces which I never would have thought would be on this list. I had to google who that even was to see what you were even referencing. Never played that game.

        1. Really? Most video game villain lists have GLaDOS in the top 5 nearly always.

          1. It’s a really fun series, especially Portal 2, but I can understand not wanting to play it.
