Question:
If you could what category would you add to the Academy Awards?
Geeks:
Dan “MovieRevolt” Clark
Kevin “OptimusSolo” Thompson
I could not agree with you more in regards to Her. I adored that movie. Such a soft sweet tale. Kevin’s story about the internet going out in college really struck a chord with me. We would have the same thing happen when I was in school. You realize you can talk to some people though IM, but in real life it was awkward.
After Her I wish the Academy had a category for best voice over. Have you guys seen In a World yet? That’s also a great movie about the life of movie voiceover people.
I have been a proponent of Voice Overs having a category in both movie and tv award shows for a long time!!
I agree. voice actors do not get nearly enough respect.
God I need to see Her. All I hear is amazing things. I don’t usually like Spike Jonez stuff so I’m worried I won’t like it.
I don’t really care about Awards that much. Bunch of rich white men giving awards to other rich white men. If I could add stuff I would add awards to recognize genre films that get ignored, like Best Action movie, best horror movie, best action scene ect…,
You sir, might enjoy an upcoming episode we have for you then :)
They should do a Best Snub category where collect all the snubs from all the different categories and pick the best one. Like a best honorable mention award. Movies that didn’t make best picture, actors who weren’t nominated, directors, etc.. It be like one giant undo button for who won saying, yes you should have been nominated.
Wag the Dog is one of my favorite movies and that makes the case for them adding a category for best Producer.
I could see that, the issue being it is hard to tell the influence a producer had.
Couldn’t you say the same thing about directors though? We really don’t know what they are doing, what editors are doing, or the actors doing themselves.
Her is one the best movies I have seen in the last few years. I did not think I would
see a better film this year than 12 Years a Slave, oh boy was I wrong. Such a
touching story that I could not get enough of. The performances are great, and I
agree with you on how amazing the world is. A masterpiece for sure.
I don’t know if I would add a category to the Academy Awards. Or Maybe best movie not released to the theater. Open the door for some web content to get in there.
I’m guessing you recorded this before the news of Michael Douglass cast as Hank Pym. Not sure how I feel about it, but I do like they are trying to do both while sticking true to the original. I just don’t see Douglass in that role.
Speaking of which what about doing an award for best casting?
The doc Casting By… makes quite the case for making a category for Best Cast Director.
I don’t see Michael Douglass as Hank Pym. NOthing about him feels like a Superhero. I do like that they are keeping true to the books with Hank Pym being the original Ant Man
Did you see the Oscar nominations. They should make an Oscar
for Best Tom Hanks performance after not getting ANY nominations. Biggest snub.
That was BS, he should have got nominated for ONE of those performances. Grr, stupid Academy!
I have been waiting to see Her for quite some time now. Finally checked it out earlier today, and I must say I was somewhat disappointed. Maybe my expectations where just too high, but the last twenty minutes really feel. It got too self-righteous and self-important
and went for these grand ideas that were indulgent. I still liked it, only the last twenty minutes left me cold. All the performances were great though.
You’re going to have to expound on that a little bit. In what ways was it indulgent or self-righteous??
Mostly in the direction of the Samantha character. She becomes this wiser than though commentary on life, love, and the spiritual self. It stops being about the relationship between the two characters and more focused on these extensional siliques that feel like they go on forever. A lot of the realism between the two characters starts t go away so it can reach these lofty explanations on how Spike Jonez feels about life. Samantha became too over written and Jonez voice dominated the last twenty minutes. The decisions came off as an excuse for him to spread his own views, and less about these character’s growth
I disagree big time
Ok, I guess my question is do you feel her development was rushed at all?
What about best use of music. I know they have best music score and original song. This is more when the right song is used at the right moment. That’s a skill only a few directors have and it should be recognized when it happens.
So I dismissed Her completely. The idea just sounded dumb. A dude falling in love with Siri. But after your review I might change my mind. You did a better job explaining it then the marketing did.
This will forever be the best live action siri scene ever. LOL
