  1. I don’t think the question is should there be more or less humans, but if there are humans characters in a movie like Godzilla make sure they are interesting. Its like a Superhero and a secret identity. A Superhero is great but without a humanistic side you have half a character and no context to give you a reason to care. Look at something like Transformers. The issue with that movie isn’t that the focus is on the humans. The issue is the human characters are annoying. If they are at least exciting to watch they would be added something to the movie instead of sucking the life out of it.

    1. Funny because I was about to use Transformers as an example of where you did not need human characters. Transformers have their own personality, their own back story, and yes their own humanity. They are not mindless machines or monsters like Godzilla. So far the human characters have taken away from we want to see. Would you make an Avengers movie and focus on some random dude on the street? No you would focus on The Avengers.

      1. You are missing my larger point. The key question isn’t, are there humans, but are those humans interesting. . The original Godzilla had more interesting characters and made a more vital point on man’s arrogance with nuclear weapons. This Godzilla tries to do some of those things but fails. Sure Transformers don’t NEED human characters, but they wouldn’t RUIN the movie if they were good characters.

        1. I get what you are saying. Just in this case your example works against you.

      2. They did make a show about The Avengers that didn’t have The Avengers in it. It’s called Agents of Shield lol and it is awful.

      3. Like Kevin mentioned on the podcast who is it that won’t make a movie without human characters. Think about it. Even people who like the Transformers movies never mention the humans. Well maybe Megan Fox.

        1. I could go without Megan Fox honestly. She is an awful actress and will probably ruin teenage mutant ninja turtles

  2. You guys are spot on with your take with Godzilla. Not getting some of the love its getting. Some of the moments are really good. Its a chore to get to them though.

The question is a good one but hard to answer. I assume we are not counting Disney movies with the idea of no human characters. Armageddon is one that comes to my mind when I hear the idea less human characters, although back story may be a better word then characters. We really did not need the scene between Affleck and Liv Tyler in the park with the animal crackers. One of the worst moments in movie history and that relationship did nothing but waste time.

    1. Thanks! Glad we finally get a movie where someone agrees with our take haha ;) – Yea, the question is definitely a hard one, obviously a lot of films cannot be done without humans (transformers being an exception) but the idea of where the focus is and just throwing in humans or kids or certain elements because they think we need someone to relate to, is really a misnomer!

  3. Yes there have been other VHS movies. Two so far. Horror anthologies are having somewhat of a comeback as of late. The first one was okay but the second one was a big improvement. I especially love the zombie segment that had some really clever ideas

    1. Some of the new anthologies have been really bad though. The ABC’s of death is unwatchable.

  4. I see what you guys are saying with Godzillas issues but there’s more good in the movie besides the final battle that makes it a recommend for me. And I actually thought the teases where well done and reminded me a lot of the original.

  5. The new Muppet Reboots could use less human characters. Most Wanted Focused on the Muppets more but the one before that had too much Jason Segel and Amy Adams. They are both fine with their own things, I just want the focus to be on Muppets in my Muppet movie.

    1. I thought the same way about the Muppets until I saw Most Wanted. Then I thought they were sorely missed.

    2. That’s an interesting example! I’m going to have to think about that one a bit!

  6. I don’ t understand why more people are not talking about Interstellar. It looks like the movie Contact should have been. Nolan has not disappointed me yet. May be the movie I’m most excited for this year.

  7. Great review guys. I don’t want to say you are wrong ;) but I had a lot of fun with Godzilla. I have come to expect with a Godzilla movie that the humans will be duds and not amazing characters. I liked the build up to the final battle. It was a good pain seeing it cutaway to make us wait. I like it when directors build to a tipping point.
