Review of Gotham Episode All Happy Families Are Alike (Spoilers)

I do want to apologize for this delayed review.  It’s been three weeks, since the Gotham finale.  However I’m moving to the Sunshine State.  So I got a tad backtracked.  Hopefully I can play catch up soon.  The good news is, by July.  I’ll be settled, and all should be back to “normal.”  But what isn’t normal.  Or satisfactory for that matter.  Was the “weak sauce,” of a season finale.  I don’t know if Gotham is a reboot.  A prequel, an alternate universe in itself.  Whatever the case is, I came close.  To dropping the microphone and walking away.

GOTHAM: Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor, R) pays a special visit to Carmine Falcone (John Doman, L) in the ÒAll Happy Families Are AlikeÓ episode of GOTHAM airing Monday, May 4 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. ©2015 Fox Broadcasting Co. Cr: Jessica Miglio/FOX

The series has been an roller-coaster.  As an fan, I have been nit-picky.  It’s 75 years of D.C. after all. I also think that B.T.A.S. has always been underrated.  On the other hand, how much can an writer muck up?  After I publish my review.  I’ll occasionally look to see what others have wrote. Was I too “harsh?”  Did I understand the point of this series?  Apparently I’m not the only one disappointed.  I’ll be back for season two.  But I hope some of the “issues,” get resolved.

First was the whole Penguin/Fish plot.  They’ve  been trying to get rid.  Of Both Falcone and Maroni for months.  They acted all Starscream. Penguin would also go  all Dr. Smith from Lost in Space.  I still think Penguin is too  green, to run Gotham.  He likes to be in charge. But doesn’t really know how to run the city.  Don Falcone seemed to know how to run Gotham. Don Maroni was acting Al Pacino Scarface. We’ve seen Don Falcone act like a senile old man.  To fool his enemies.  Only to have Penguin, Fish Mooney and Don Maroni.  Cause some sort of “fluster cluck,” of a takeover. To scare him him out of the business?

Gotham-1-970x545

Granted In the middle of the series. Fish and Butch, attempted to assassinate Falcone.  Only to have her change her mind.  And cause the writers to just.  Make things up as they go along.  We fast forward to the finale.  Falcone is in an hospital.  Tied to an bed. So Penguin is going to kill Falcone.  Not realizing that Commissioner Lobe.  Wants to kill both Penguin and Falcone.  Jim and Bullock happen to intervene. Sadly the four are captured and tied up.  Which is something out of Batman ’66.  Oh, and Fish who we thought was dead. Sails into Gotham Bay.  All Captain Jack Sparrow. Recruits Selena Kyle, and I’m rolling my eyes.

She tires to work out a deal with Maroni.  But since he keeps calling her babes. She shoots him dead.  Causing the most hyped up war. Between the two families, into just another episode.  Penguin does take out fish.  But I’m not convinced she’s dead. I still think she’s Ertha Kitt Catwoman. She died on The Dollmaker’s island.  She dies by Penguin’s hands. There is no sign of a body.  So you never know.  She could return, as a guest anyway.  Still Penguin standing on a ledge. Proclaiming he’s the king of Gotham. Didn’t entice me, I love Robin Lord Taylor. He got his wish, let’s see if there is a payoff.

Next we have the Leslie/Barbara fiasco.  It’s nice to see Jim, Leslie, and Barbara together.  Continuing to roll my eyes.  Leslie insists that Barbara needs trauma counseling (no S*&^).  But she wants Leslie to console her.  In the Loft, that she and Jim.  Used to live in, oh and it will be.  Leslie and Barbara by themselves.  Not in Leslie’s office. Or an hospital, or maybe The G.C.P.D. ?  Seriously how stupid is Leslie?  She admits, that she doesn’t have much trauma counseling experience. You know what?  If Leslie was that gullible.  She deserved to die.

I’m not going to educate people on Barbara Keene in the comics. Because the writers of Gotham don’t want to.  All I know is that she killed her parents.  Not The Ogre, and we see Barbara slipping into madness.  Again Leslie was working in Arkham.  She couldn’t pick up the signs. From Barbara’s facial expressions. To how she really felt about her parents?  Eventually (I’m guessing) the new Barbara comes out.  She tired to kill Leslie with a knife.  Only to have Leslie overpower her.  And bash Barbara’s head in?  Is Barbara going to become Harley Quinn?  A few episodes ago, Selena/Ivy/Barbara were sharing the loft.  Which was an reference to the Gotham City Sirens comics.  In The New 52 comics. Joker stated that there was one.  Than more Harley, so I could see Barbara as Harley.

I’m giving the Barbara/Leslie scenes a pass.  Only if she turns into Harley.  If not, then the writers really.  Don’t know what to do with her. Because up to this point.  She has been an useless character.  Other than showing some leg.  What purpose does Barbara offer?   She’s not strong, she just gets dumped.  Or hurt by anyone she comes across.  She’s more of a prop than an character. But gotta wait until September to see her fate.  Saving the best for last.  And no I’m not being saractisitic.   The Riddler/Bruce scenes.

Gotham-121-8

If you’re still weary of Eddie.  Don’t be, this is what the character should be. Socially awkward, placing clues in his riddles. Making mistakes, because he can’t help himself.  Granted he’s acting Gollum from The LOTR’s.  Or if you’ve ever seen the film altered states.  But I did like how Kris Kringle.  Found out that Eddie wrote the false note.  From the former G.C.P.D. officer.  It takes a bit from Batman Forever.  Not much, but this actor is a better Riddler than Jim Carrey was. Oh and Bruce found, The Batcave?  HUH?  So Thomas built it?  I understand we don’t want to see Bruce fall into the cave.  We’ve seen it too many times.  But I am curious, where it will lead to.  I do like the actors who play Bruce and Alfred.  I’m just hoping it doesn’t go all Lil’ Gotham.

The Fein-al Verdict.

Season One of Gotham, was all over the place.  There were some good – excellent episodes. I think three – four episodes I gave a five star rating.  The biggest problem was.  Where was The Mayor?  Where was Harvey Dent?  Where was Victor Zazz?  They should have been in the finale.  Also Don Maroni was responsible for throwing acid in Harvey’s face.  Granted Maroni was getting more and more out of control.  But to kill him off so soon was a mistake.  Falcone leaving is another.  Does that mean Rupert Throne and Ronald Dagget. Will start to appear?  Bringing in characters, and killing them off. Is wrong, it leaves out character development.  And just asks what was the point?  I still don’t know where the series is going.  Hopefully with four – five months off.  The staff gets to go on an writers retreat.

"We all go a Little Mad Sometimes"

The whole Dons losing control of Gotham. Fish "possibly," getting bumped off. Penguin seizing control of Gotham. Just felt both sloppy and rushed.
