  1. Oh, I didn’t say I liked Sonic 3 due to the graphics. (I might have commented on the graphics, but I wouldn’t rest my laurels on just that.) I like Sonic 3, because it’s a much deeper and more balanced game. The stages are huge, and they’re fun to explore. There are tons of secret paths to find. Some lead to shortcuts or easier paths. You can even break the stage sequence or get Sonic to accidentally fall into a part of the stage meant for Knuckles, and vice versa.

Also, every zone has its own motif. Even when you transition from the first act to the second, the zone stage motif changes and adds a bunch of new obstacles and gimmicks that weren’t in the first act. You even get different music arrangements in act 2 of every zone. It’s as if Sonic 3 went out of its way to break the monotony of the first two games.

And the music is amazing. There are no bad music tracks in Sonic 3. Some of my favorite toe-tappers are Hydrocity Zone, Flying Battery, Death Egg Zone, Chrome Gadget, Ice Cap, and Marble Garden.

There are only two flaws in Sonic 3. One is the infamous barrel in Carnival Night Zone, which every Sonic 3 player knows about. The other flaw is that you need the Sonic & Knuckles cartridge to play the second half of the game. In my mind, Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles don’t even exist as separate games. They demand to be played with the lock-on.

  2. I find it funny that Mike chose the Master System over the NES, especially at the time that would have happened. I’m guessing late 86 or even 87. By that point, there were enough great games on Nintendo that it should have been a no-brainer. Metroid, Zelda, Punch-Out, Rad Racer, Castlevania, Mega Man, and so on.

The Sega Master System was (technically) the superior hardware when compared to the NES. The problem was that nothing was on it. Okay, okay… It had Phantasy Star, but as I’ve said before, you’ve got some serious problems when the killer app on your 8-bit console is a freakin’ ROLEPLAYING GAME!!!

Sorry, RPGs. We’ll talk again in the PlayStation era.

Sega Master System also had Monster World and Alex Kidd. One of those is really good, and the other one is Alex Kidd. Okay, Alex Kidd is alright, but he’s no surrogate for Mario.

I can’t really think of much else that’s on the system. What do British and Brazilian people see in this thing? I don’t get it.

Man, Mike. To paraphrase the guy from Last Crusade, you chose… poorly.

  3. Ok let’s see I’m a Nintendo guy. Nothing else. Call me archaic where I grew up is simply made a choice and I chose Nintendo.
NES: obviously Legend of Zelda, Super Mario 1-3, TMNT Arcade(Oh that first TMNT game is a bitch!!) Elavator Action(one of the first games I down loaded on Wii arcade) oh and Mega Man 2.

Super NES: Here we go. I had a lot more Siper NES games. Link to the Past, Super Mario World. Super Scope 6(Santa got me that!) Ken Griffie Jr base ball(such a great non complicated baseball game). But the king of the Super NES, a game I still play today, my favorite Mario game of all time, my 2nd favorite game ever, Super Mario RPG! This was the first RPG I ever played and really probably the last. I mean I’ve played some others on later systems but never beat them. Never really enjoyed them. Not like Super Mario RPG.
Can’t wait for the 64 and Cube talk.

    1. I’m with you, I was Intellivision, Commodore 64, IBM, and then strictly Nintendo (NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube) and then I left the gaming world basically
