Review of Darth Vader #4 – Book I, Part IV Vader

Darth Vader #4

Darth Vader #4

Everyone knows the theme to the evil Sith Lord Darth Vader! So I’ve not read this book for a bit. However now I’m diving back in, and ready for the awesomeness that is this series! Here’s my spoiler filled review of Darth Vader #4!

SW Darth Vader #4 Titles

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know! I’m a bit late with this review. Either way I’ve gotten some renewed energies, and I decided to put them towards this series that Marvel has been doing so well. I’ve had nothing but positives to say about the Darth Vader Series. Gillen and Larroca, along with Delgado kill it on every issue. The story is just so refreshing to me. In order to catch up though I did have to go back and reread the first three issues. That isn’t a complaint, because even on a second read through they still stand up so well. The story Gillen in telling here is just so damn good!

Writing:

Gillen kills it on the writing once again!!! We all know Darth Vader is somewhat a character we should give sympathy to, but often we don’t. At least we didn’t until Jedi, and it was revealed that he was once Anakin Skywalker. The greatest reason why I love this series, is we see Vader’s story after “A New hope” Kieron Gillen is doing such an amazing job by weaving his own tale, yet staying true to the continuity bits that he throws into the issue. In this issue the story is all about Vader returning to Geonosis to assemble his army. What I’m really enjoying in this series is the back and forth “discussions” that Vader and Aphra have. It’s a very interesting piece to watch play out. So Vader returns to Geonosis, to find a droid army. Yet the army he finds are the queen’s children! They are droids, but they are very insect like droids!

Gillen gives us several awesome moments in this issue. We see exactly why BT and Triple Zero are the way they are, and we see them in action!!! Damn I’m really loving these droids, compared to their counterparts personalities in 3PO and R2! I just love this whole villain thing…. seeing their story compared to what we normally see. my hope is that Gillen takes us through events leading to Empire, and then weave tales after the before Jedi and so on. I dunno if the series will last that long, but hey one can hope right. The story as we explore Geonosis is that they fight the droid Queen, to win Vader his army. After this happens we find Cylo IV, and Triple Zero is entrusted to torture any info outta him. This will eventually lead us down a strange and interesting path in future issues. So far Vader has been operating on his own private agenda… in an attempt to find the force strong pilot that handed him his defeat!

Art:

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…Larroca’s art alongside Delgado’s colors are what Star Wars is all about! At least in comics. These men really nail the art!!!! I mean look about this text, and below it. The shadows in the above panel are wonderfully done. Then there’s BT and Triple Zero in the panel below….. And they decimate the droid army resistance! I will completely not understand why any Star Wars fan will have issues with the art in this series. Every pencil line, ink blot, and coloring tool is used to a most impressive end. Each issue has been glorious to look at. I really enjoy the way Larroca and Delgado come up with the ways that they have the characters set in the story. Once again look at the panel below…. If you REALLY LOOK at it… To me it looks as if the characters are in a cave on Tatooine, but they aren’t! That’s how damn good this art is.

Final Thoughts:

Overall issue #4 of Darth Vader has me on the edge of my seat. Literally I’m about to fall out of my chair!! The new character additions have me super excited, and I can’t wait to see what events unfold in the future! Looking forward to issue #5 and seeing where the story goes! You can get Darth Vader #4 from Comixology digitally or any of your local comic shops!

Review Overview

Really Liked It!

DROID TICKLE TORTURE IS NOT A REAL THING!

I'm waiting to find something I really dislike about this series. So far the creative team hasn't let me down at all. Issue #4 of Darth Vader really progresses the story in more of a subtle way. It isn't super action in your face, and that might be what is so good about it. Don't get me wrong I love battle scenes, but the way this story is being written, it's better to go the subtle route!
